Now that you've learned how to disassemble your pool table, learn how to put it back together by watching the next video in this series:
• How to Assemble a Pool...
All too often people who own or buy a pool table attempt to move it themselves. However, if done incorrectly, not only can the table get broken, but, property or people can be hurt as well. Not to mention, the added expense of having a professional (or professionals) fix those things that did get broken - this includes potential doctor bills!
In this video, I give a comprehensive, step-by-step account of how I break-down a pool table. In almost 30 years of doing pool tables, I have NEVER damaged a table, a customer's property, or anyone (including myself). So, this is a tried and true method of disassembling a pool table!

Can you do a short video showing how to remove the rubber bumpers from the sidewalls please, haven't found one video yet that shows this. I got a mini snooker table for free but when I went to pick it up, I wasn't aware it was a solid slate table (4'x8') and there was only 4 of us to move it. Anyway, I live in a 2nd floor flat, old building, so when we got the table back and down to 3 men, it wasn't going upstairs, yet. So the legs section went upstairs and the top got left wrapped (poorly) in pvc on the front lawn. Months of trying to arrange 6 people to lift it, buying old seat belts to design and make a lifting sling to take it up 5 flights of stairs, buying plyboard and fitting it under the carpet to spread the weight as to not drop it through the floor on our neighbours, and the torrential rain of a British summer meant it was out so long, upside down, that water seaped in and saturated one corner of the table. Mould took in. But it's now in the flat and I've sprinkled soda crystals over the affected area to dry out and kill some mold, brushed that off, vacuumed it on a low setting, dried it then sprayed it with white vinegar and dried it overnight but its pretty solidly ruined and I'm looking to DIY it. Replacing the slate cloth seems straightforward enough but I can't find any info on sorting the cushions. Any help you can offer would be massively appreciated!

Gotta tell yah, Went and picked up a nice Brunswick pool table today. Watched this 3 times prior. Went to disassemble it and had everyone thinking I had done this a million times. It went very well. Great video. Now to move it all down to my basement and reassemble it. Also this table not hard to do at all. Slates were heavy but had the right boys for the job to help move them. No injuries and no fatalities 😂. Thanks again.

Great job! I’m a moving company owner and we often get requests to move pool tables. In fact, I was asked today for a quote to move a nice Brunswick table. However, I prefer to refer this to other pros like you. I appreciated your comments on the risk of accepting jobs done by non pros. It’s not worth the risk.

I’ve been doing bar tables for a gaming company and I’ve always glued them since the single piece slate wasn’t attached to a wooden frame. Okay, thanks for posting this video. Tips helped out a lot. I am a plumber who was doing some work on a job that I had plumbed over 10 years ago. The original owners were quite wealthy and had the best of the best. They moved and sold the house with all the furniture and decorations and everything! I mean everything, even the towels and the dishes. I recently heard that the new owners want to give the pool table away and I have first dibs on it. I picked it up yesterday with the help of some friends and it was heavy! Three piece slate but definitely was a work out, lol. The table is beautiful and looks all hand carved. I couldn’t find a manufacturer name on anything and I would like to know how to identify the table if possible. Thanks, ~Keith

Very nice instruction. Besides the tedious felt removal, and weight I don't see why people wouldn't want to do it this themselves, but a lot of people don't like doing anything themselves. Pay a lot of money to move a table that probably isn't worth that much. I'm looking at a very nice olhausen at auction and if it stays dirt cheap I'll buy it. I do everything myself, I've moved large safes and refrigerators by myself but I'd bring someone to help carry the slate and frame. Obviously there's risk but if I can get a table worth thousands, for a couple $100 because no one wants to move it I'll take that risk. I also have a machinists level that reads finer than standard machinists levels so that isn't an issue.

I came across this video in the process of researching about pool tables. Great video ! Can I please ask why the slate does not have a wood/plywood support at the bottom? Having a support would allow not to take the slate apart. I could not find this answer online and hoping you may know the reason 😊
@CreativeRestorations
@CreativeRestorations 6 месяцев назад
Some 3pc slate tables have wood liners (either solid wood, plywood, or particle board). The wood liner doesn't prohibit taking the slate apart. Also, the wood liner doesn't add much (if anything) to support the slate. Really, it's there to give a tacking edge for the cloth. Glad you like the video. Hope I've answered your question. If not, maybe rephrase it so I know exactly what you're referring to.

Hello guys, I tried moving my pool table as part of an anniversary surprise while my spouse is away. Thank you so much for the info its saving me alot of money to do it myself. I have a golden west table we got secondhand. The problem i am running into is a stripped slate screw. This screw wont budge ive tried using a stripped screw drill bit it still wont come out. BUT it gets worse. Long story short the screw broke off and i was able to move the piece. have I completely ruined my table? Or can it be salvaged? Or do i need to buy a new slate? And not sure if this matters but the screws holes are angled. Lastly is there something the you can put to repair chips in the slate? My table is old and i can see the chipped pieces around the holes from drills being used previously (not just from me)

hello and thank you for sharing your knowledge on this. I enjoyed watching you do this video. I bet it was hot on that 3rd floor. One question. How did you lift off the slate pieces once they were free? Did you and your partner carry them down the steps any certain way, or did you put them on a dolly? I ask this as this is my biggest concern on how to handle these slate pieces and if they could break just by carrying them the wrong way. I would think they are pretty heavy, as I do have an antique 1923 Medalist Brunswick I helped the tech put together and remember these pieces were so heavy that we could not carry them, but again, not sure as it was some time ago. We actually slid them down my back yard on snow. Of course I can't do that now, nor it is downhill either. Any recommendations when it comes to packing these slate pieces away for storage or transportation? And yes, I do believe I have the pinned version table, which is a Medalist model. It takes a special "forked wrench" to take the parts off and I do have a replica version. Can you please respond back on how you would deal with moving these slate pieces from the table to actual hauling them? Would you use a special type of dolly with padding on the frame? This would be my biggest concern.

I watched your videos prior to today not knowing that today I would be purchasing a nice used Brunswick! The video was identical to my disassemble. Thank you for the great instructions! I have one question at this point: Can the felt be washed after removal?
@CreativeRestorations
@CreativeRestorations 3 года назад
I wouldn't advise putting it in a washing machine. But, I have (in a pinch) used a dedicated upholstery cleaner along with a product called "Folex" to clean the cloth. It isn't ideal. But, it will take out major spills and the like. Should you decide to do that, you'd want to kinda stretch the cloth out over the table and do it before actually installing the cloth. The cloth will end up wet after the procedure. But, you just let it air-dry for a few days and then come back and do a proper re-install of the cloth. If you do it, don't take off the rail cloth. You'll never be able to reuse it.
@thomaspeeler5725
@thomaspeeler5725 3 года назад
@@CreativeRestorations Thank you! The entire cloth is soiled (but in good shape), so I was thinking of hand washing in a tub with warm water and soap, and then letting it hang dry as not to shrink it. Sound OK to you? I wouldn't touch the rails.
@CreativeRestorations
@CreativeRestorations 3 года назад
I still wouldn't do it that way. The fibers in pool table cloth aren't as tightly woven as regular fabric. So, I would keep the agitation to an absolute minimum.

In my younger days I might have given it a go myself but now that back issues dominate my decisions, I choose to hire some if at all possible. Is it okay to have everything removed from the frame but leave the frame intact? This way it could move to another area of the room and allow the workers to install the flooring without having to disassemble the entire frame.

You can leave the frame/legs intact. But, I would HIGHLY recommend removing the rails, cloth, and slate. Lots of pool table slate has been broken doing this exact kind of move without removing it first.

Thanks. Yes all that will be removed. I just wanted to make sure that the frame could be move without damage (if the movers are careful).

Thanks for the video of clear instructions. If the slate pieces ARE pinned can you just pull them apart like you showed with the table in the video that was NOT pinned together? I want to take apart the pool or billiard table to discard it and keep the slate pieces. Advertising and selling it is not an option where I live.

Any time you aren't sure if there are pins or not, you use a flat-blade screwdriver to pry apart the slates slightly at the seams. If you do that little-by-little, you can look between the slates to make sure there aren't any pins. If there are pins, you would, at that point, slide them apart (without lifting) until you're clear of the pins.

Hi Doug. Great video! Wish I lived in New Orleans so I could call you to disassemble and reassemble my Brunswick pool table. Do you have a recommendation for a professional that does this in Denver, Colorado? Thanks Doug!

I was really happy when I found this video and was enjoying it until......you failed to show the part where you actually remove the slate. Did the two of you lift it off??? How did you package it to move????? This was the part that I really wanted to see because the slate is what I'm most worried about. Any additional info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Fantastic video, thank you so much! You've got me thinking I can disassemble and move a table I want to buy (2 hours away one way, and 3.5 hours one way from the nearest table mover I can find). May I ask if there any tips you could share on what might be different process wise on a 2003 9' Vitalie Caswell from the Brunswick featured here? Thank you!
@CreativeRestorations
@CreativeRestorations 3 года назад
The way I teach table disassembly is more of a method rather than an exact "step-by-step" intended for every table. So, while your Vitale may not be assembled EXACTLY the same way as this Brunswick, disassembly will be similar - detach pockets, remove rail bolts, remove pocket bolts (if applicable), disassemble rails, remove cloth, remove slate screws, remove slate, remove leg bolts and legs, disassemble frame (if necessary). Nothing to be scared or apprehensive about. They all go together pretty much the same. You got this!

You didn’t show moving the slate. Do you move it on edge? Do all slates have a wood backer?

If you're using a standard pickup truck, lay them flat in the bed (stacked one on top of another) first - before anything else gets loaded. If you're using a moving van, I would strongly suggest crating them individually and strapping them to the side of the box standing up. Standard pickup trucks have softer springs than moving trucks/vans. So, to prevent shock waves from cracking them in a moving van/truck, you should really transport them like you would glass. Standing up.

Great video. I have an 8’ Maderia table I took down and want to store. The frame isn’t as easy take down as the one in your video. Do pool table manufacturers ever glue some frame pieces together to reinforce the screws? I’ve taken all the screws I can see out and the frame won’t budge. There also looks to be small staples going through several pieces wood holding the corners together. Is there a safe way to take this frame down that you know of?
@CreativeRestorations
@CreativeRestorations 3 года назад
Some frames are glued and screwed together. There are lots of less common manufacturers out there. Some of them have been known to use that type of construction on their tables. If it is that type of construction, don't attempt to take it any further apart. You'll end up doing more harm than good.

I have an olhausen table and the slate pieces are connected in the center. Any idea how to take it apart? Wedging screwdriver between the where pieces meet on the side hasn’t done the trick.

Is it a good idea to change the color of the wood? My pool table has some scratches on it and I’m planning to hire a carpenter to fix that and I though maybe to change the color. I was planning first to hire a professional to take the cloth off the table, but never consider to dissemble the whole table to repair the scratches and specially to change the color. What do you think?

After our table was assembled, the wrong way by an amateur (not me), it now needs to be pulled down for the floors to be redone and the legs put together properly. They didn't think that the leveling feet were necessary. Doh!

Doug....I am in construction and have multiple laser levels that are accurate within 1/8" @ 75 yards. After levelling the base with a standard 2 ft and 4 ft level can I then use a laser to set the base frame once again with the laser to confirm or adjust the elevation? (Olhausen) I would determine the highest elevation point of the entire base with the laser ( which would then be "0" elevation) and then shim the base accordingly until the entire base is lasered in up to the "0" elevation. Is this step unnecessary? I figure once the base is spot on with shims already intact, then set the middle slate, recheck each corner on this slate section with the laser and proceed to set the 2 end slates again rechecking for spot on elevation. Am I taking unnecessary steps here or should I just level the base standard as best I can then shim the slates with the laser if needed?...or just forget the laser altogether? Lastly I assume the legs do come off a Olhausen table correct? I had seen where you said Ohausen's are solid frame.
@CreativeRestorations
@CreativeRestorations Год назад
I've never seen a need to use a laser level. My carpenter's levels work just fine for rough-in of the frame/legs. With the slates, it's an entirely different situation. As I've pointed out in other videos, I use a machinist's level for the slates. Getting a bubble between two lines seems to be the easiest way of telling how level they are. A carpenter's level will also work for the slates. But, you'll want it to be fairly new. They do go out of level over time. Also, if you're using a standard carpenter's level, take a reading and then, rotate it 180 degrees and see if reads the same. If it does, your level is at least calibrated to within the manufacturer's specs. As for your Olhausen, yes. The legs do come off. The frames themselves (on most Olhausen tables) are solid. But, they still make them to where the legs come off for a move.
