Today, we'll take a look inside the CJRB Kicker, a knife featuring Artisan/CJRB's 'Recoil Lock', which turns out to be a modified sliding-bar style lock with a little carriage moving the bolt. And at the end, I'll give my first impressions on the knife.

CJRB killing it right now with the Centros, Feldspar, Kicker, and Ria. All at good price points too! I thought I was a Kershaw fanboy for budget EDC, then suddenly, CJRB....

This lock actuation seems to address the issue of uneven pressure on the sliding bar. Uneven pressure on the bar, according to some nonauthoritative sources, can cause wear asymmetry and may contribute to omega spring failure.

I bought the kicker for the lock. I couldn’t get comfortable with the flipper tab kicking my finger off the lock. Maybe that is why it is called the kicker.

I always forget to ask.. Do you think replacement Omega springs for some of the Benchmades would work? I have yet to ever break a Omega spring but it would be nice to know... I suppose I could disassemble some of my Benchamdes and compare the omega springs..

Thanks Nick ... Now we know this knife probably shares the same defective performance of most Benchmade and Ganzo Axis lock knives.

Hi.I disassembled knife and put some KPL oil between bronze and teflon washers,but when I assembled this again,the blade was not centered,touching to one side,so I hear a noise when open- close the blade. Any suggestion please?

It can be useful to take the whole thing apart if the slider or its little tracks get full of crud.

The moisture levels are at maximum, is it the blade shape? Is it the thunderstorm outside my apt? Or is it the fact Nick posted this as soon as I woke up? We'll never know

Interesting... New locking mechanism but I would prefer the axis-lock that could provide an even spine from handle to blade... IMHO Spyderco's Ball Bearing Lock is the best solution of all those types of locking mechanism, simply cause you don't have to deal with an Omega Spring at all... Thank you for the presentation...

hey The Nick, there's a knife i'm curious about; it seems like an accessibly-priced laconico design, maybe? with m390 steel. the name of it is confusing but i saw it here: www.knifecenter.com/item/ALCSSJBK/alliance-designs-signature-series-ray-laconico-og-jasmine-folding-knife-m390-drop-point-blade-black-g10-handles i wonder if it's any good - blade stock sounds a bit thick for a flat-ground interpretation of a Jasmine, i fear. can't find any opinions on the knife out in the interwebs yet.

I worry you could accidentally disengage the lock doing drawing cuts? Maybe since you're already applying pressure in a safe direction on the blade that's not much of a worry but it might be an issue.
@thomash4578
@thomash4578 4 года назад
But if you are doing a draw cut and the lock disengages, the drawing action will keep the blade open

I won't be getting this, but if I did I'd prefer a carriage without play just so the contact between bar & carriage is direct and immediate ('Bar & Carriage' sounds like a magazine for Western Saloon owners) .

I've had this knife for a month, now. Unimpressed enough not to venture off to explore it's bigger brother, the Blowback. That blade is off to a slow start, based on continued availability at all major sellers. On this particular blade that release doesn't have much friction on the finger and my index finger is constantly slipping off what appears to be a tumbled finish pot metal or whatever. The sides of the release are even worse. In all, this one gets a giant, "Meh!". 🙄

Yet I own both the Kicker and Crag with the recoil lock and I have no issues. I also have looked at a few that friends have purchased and theirs also work well. I do understand what you are referring to but it isn't very hard to run a checkering file on this if need be. Maybe I am just a really lucky person and have good ones. I do also know you want to keep the pivot kinda snug. It makes it easier to flip , when the pivot is too loose it feels like a super weak detent. I collect all sorts of knives and I really like innovative designs and really go after these kind of knives. I am not saying this is better than Benchmades Axis lock , but I also feel it is a worthy lock to own. Over time these become smooth and easy to operate. Where Ganzo did copy the Axis lock they use stronger omega springs. They take some real time to break in and never become as smooth as Benchmade..

Omega springs have gone the way of the Dino in my collection. Too complicated with too many unnecessary parts. Maybe the next Holt or Shirogorav will have them. I doubt it. This mechanism belongs to the past.

I really like this locking system! I own several Benchmades as I am kinda a Benchmade nut. That all started when I was active duty. Carried a few Benchmades in the worlds largest sandbox. Mainly for self defense against camal spiders.. Haha! This must be rather boring for Nick. Not everyone after all can afford a timascus, super platinum and gold knife that cost more than most modern vehicles. You know , the ones that di not require a outlet. Just kidding. I love Nick's reviews. Just sometimes his knives are so far out of reach for most hard working Americans under the Biden administration. Hmm? A $3000.00 knife or fuel and food? Decisions...... decisions.. Since Christmas is rolling around I feel it is a great idea that Nick spreads the wealth and donates some of his nice knives to me!! 😁 But seriously thank you once again kind sir for this review! Always a thrill ride..

No, I don't think so. Sliding bar, axis-style Locks have all the strength needed for daily life.
@ScottNeelan

The tests I've seen of the original Axis lock design put it pretty near the top for sheer lock strength, just below the Tri-Ad and Compression locks and on-par/slightly ahead of the Ball Bearing lock. I'll give you that this is a different company and a slightly modified design, but those mods don't seem to affect the actual lockup.
@alpine1600s

The Axis lock. One of the most overrated locks invented. It's like the half leaf spring rear suspension on older Corvettes. Did it work? Sure, but there was zero reason them to use it.
@gpearce11
@gpearce11 4 года назад
I wouldn't say zero reason. The axis lock, and locks like it (compression, ball bearing, etc), allow you to close the blade without putting your fingers anywhere near the cutting edge, and are ambidextrous, which is handy not only for lefties, but also if you need to close your knife with your off hand. Both of these points are definite advantages compared to the "standard" frame/liner lock configuration. The Axis lock is also generally considered stronger than frame/liner locks, although for 99% of edc knife users thats irrelevant.

Overrated🤔 As compared to what? Compare a Benchmade knife to a Corvette😎 Overrated? As compared to what? It's not a Porsche, and it's not a Toyota or a Nissan🤠 Zero reason to use it🤨 Are you a slipjoint fanatic? It works well. So how and why would you want to replace it😶 But really ... did you actually try it? If you haven't and if you can't spare the money for a Benchmade knife (I would recommend the Mini Presidio II - not the prettiest knife but excellent value) then you should try one of the many Ganzo knives that come with the axis-style 'G-lock' (stronger springs than on the real thing, but still easy to actuate) or if you don't want to go Chinese then maybe the Asher Knives Centri or Nomad could work for you (or perhaps a SOG Terminus XR🤫 Or if for some reason you just don't like Benchmade, Hogue seems to do very well with their able-lock👊).
