Typical car guy fashion it's impossible to have only one project at the time. So let me tell you about this one. It's an engine rebuild project. Started as engine refresh but escalated really quickly...
In this series of videos I am preparing a M42B18 engine to be swapped into my e36 touring BMW. Currently it has a M43B16 engine which could use some more power.
Should be fun!

Re-profiled camshaft, intake, exhaust and standalone ECU would have this running maybe over 170bhp. Add a fuel pump and headwork - since you're getting it skimmed anyway, could see upto 200bhp Edit: here in the UK we use BDS motorsport do everything for the 90's bmw

170bhp is impressive but 200bhp :o that would have a chance against my friend's M52 😈

Leaving it NA is the best Suggestions 1) change the m42 timing style to m44 Will require new components and a mount for the crank position sensor. The biggest gain is to get rid of the small timing idler wheel inside the case. 2) coil on plug conversion using coils from a 6 cylinder 3) keep all the power steering connections fresh they always leak or remove power steering for a good manual rack. Enjoy! the 4 cylinder was and is an underrated gem

Thanks a lot!! I was already considering coil on plug but didn’t think about the m44 timing style. I’ll look into that 🫡 it’s possible that my m43 kinda died 😅 so it’s time to get back to this engine 😁

Cool teardown.. doing the HG and profile gasket and associated seals soon on my 91' 318is m42b18, this will be useful to reference!

Thanks! Glad it’ll help. My engine turned out to have cracked head so took some time and money to fix it 🫣 I’m assembling it now very slowly 😁

Nice to see someone else playing with on of these engines! You can do quite a lot with these. There is a guy in Queensland Australia running an engine at about 300bhp naturally aspirated. I'm not going quite so far. The first bit of advice I can give you is you might come across BDS in the UK, stay away from them. The guy who runs it is an absolute lunatic and if you have any trouble with him he'll harass you to no end. Everything he does is based on old forum posts anyway (plus a little snake oil) so it's easy to do yourself if you're mechanically inclined which you obviously are. Since you're tearing it down, an M47D20 crankshaft can be fitted (with a little modification) and will stroke the engine out. If you get some new rods/pistons, you can get the compression up to 11.5:1 without interfering with the vales and deck height. Head work isn't really necessary until you've gone cams and bottom end, but while it is apart there is a guy in Sydney Australia who will do a CNC port and larger valves. You should check out the RHD intake kits as well. Anyway, feel free to reach out, I'd be happy to point you in the right direction. I'm currently stroking my motor now.

Hi mate! a lot of useful information there! thanks a lot! my engine recently got back from machine shop afret over 7 months... lately I barely found time to do anything so it's been sitting and waiting... It should be a very basic and very budget rebuild which considering I've already spent 3x what I paid for the engine in the machine shop is already over budget. Honestly I'd be happy with 150hp 🫣 I know this number is not YT friendly and I should aim for at least 500 but it'll be my daily car hopefully... Touring is barely holding on and the engine is for the touring so it also needs way too much money already but what can I do... I'm just a guy with money spending problem 🤣 how much are you aiming for?

@@gorillaprojectcar 150 engine horsepower is easy. You'll get there from an intake and exhaust. Search 'lambertius ITB M42club' and you'll find my old build thread, plenty of dynos to prove it. A cams and ECU will see you up around 170-190bhp. I'm hoping for about 220bhp by the time everything is done. Compression should be about 11.5:1 and a capacity of 2.1L, so it should be about that.

yeah before putting any part on the engine I'll be researching the improvements for it. I will definitely keep 1.8 tho but I'm considering cams. do you have any advice regarding budget intake? I've seen dbilas intake is more than my whole car and the engine was worth 🫣

It’ll take a while. I haven’t heard from machine shop yet. I’ll try to let you know when the engine is back

Everything on these motors is stout besides the water pump profile gasket if not previously done and the lower chain socket and the guides , mine developed a slight rattle within a week, drove it for a week and a bit not much mainlylots of idling , ordered and installed a new tensioner decompressed not compressed which I’ve read could possibly be my issue. The engine made a change sounding quieter for the first Few min but it’s just becoming more consistent throughout the week and now rattling while idling even worse , bloody annoying knowing its probably too late for the guides

supercharge it with an AMR500 or even a kompressor from the mercedes 230 kompressor

oh I wish! It still stuck at a machine shop. I don't have a patience to call them anymore... It's been 7 months 🤬

A może kompresor 🤔
@gorillaprojectcar

zdecydowanie łatwiej byłoby go ogarnąć niż turbo, dobry pomysł, zastanowię się ;)

przy kompresorze tyle samo co przy turbo? zależy może gdzie się chce dać turbinę, ja bym chciał zdecydowanie schować ją i zrobić mocowanie na dole
@marcinooo84
@marcinooo84 Год назад
Różnica jest tylko w źródle doładowania, kwestia tak naprawdę wyspawania kolektora, cała reszta pozostaje bez zmian. Wtryski, dolot, strojenie. A przypominam że kompresor też trzeba gdzieś założyć i napędzić 😉

Fakt ale są zestawy gotowe i wychodzi chyba jednak taniej mimo wszystko. Chociaż i tak kosztuje tyle co całe auto 😂
