I had a Turnigy LiPo with a dead cell and wondered what to do with it. Instead of waiting for it to spontaneously combust in my garage I decided to research how to discharge and dispose of it.
Here are a couple of great references I used during the process of discharging and disposing my Turnigy LiPo battery:
www.tjinguytech.com/charging-h...
www.rctoys.com/pdf/thunder-pow...
If you have any suggestions I'd love to hear them. Or share how you dispose of your dead LiPos in the comments. Any and all feedback is appreciated.

Dennis, what I usually do when i have a dead cell, i just remove it from the battery and rewired it. you can get a 2 cell battery so there is not such a loss

Might be a good idea to snag the balance plug and wires off it before you throw it away. May come in handy for DIY battery's or damaged connector replacement.

Did you find out? I need to get rid of a 3 cell lipo that has a dead cell and I have a Hi-tek charger with an option to discharge so I'm wondering if that is the way to go?

Good video, I built the same setup with an auto light bulb and alligator clips so I can discharge other connector types too. I discharge in a metal bowl in my BBQ.

I used a jar with salt 🧂 in it and then I took it to battery plus . They said they would still recycle ♻️ it. However this looks a lot cleaner. Cool video short and sweet I’ve heard of this method but never seen it b4 thanks

Thanks for the video, very helpful. I think I like your method over the others I've seen. Instead of the light bulb, could you just discharge the Lipo using an imax charger/discharged?
@dennisbaldwin
@dennisbaldwin 8 лет назад
I'm not familiar with that discharger but I know a lot of manufacturers have a lower limit on voltage per cell that they don't let you go under. So make sure you do your research otherwise you'll be left with discharging for storage and not for disposal.

maybe a late comment but, i got a 4S lipo really old one has about 1600mAh of cap but one of the cells dropped to about 1 volt while the others are fine. but its puffed like hell and looks like a fire could become reality soon. im wondering if i discharge this on a charger -pick the discharge option ofcourse- isnt it going to puff up even more and actually cause the fire i dont want?
@sparrowlt
@sparrowlt 8 лет назад
This can lead to a fire too.. when a cell goes bellow 3V it begins to overheat and puff... some have ignited because that

i managed to find an old 2nd gen iPod, totaled. tore it apart just so i can keep the tiny motherboard. now idk how to get rid of the tiny batteries. do i do the saltwater thing for this little guy?

I just use my charger set to nickel metal hydride discharge mode at lowest drain current setting 0.1 A. And lowest discharge terminal voltage 0.5 Volts. It usually leaves the pack at about 1.5 to 2 volts. Then I do the same as the video.. cut and short the wires (very small spark) and solder them together. Initially I discharge the pack at a higher rate.

Hey...What happened to the "THREE R's"????? Reduce, Recycle and Reuse. You're missing the best of the those. I take the dead cell out and use the saltwater..... But you still have other "good" cells to re-use. Now, I would not use them to make a flight pack but there are tons of uses for batteries. I've made stuff like a pit light for night races at my local RC track. I even strung a bunch of LED's and a bunch of old cells in parallel and used them Christmas lights on a tree too far from the house to run an extension cord. Be creative, there is enough half-used stuff in our landfills already.

Matt Molloy I have never heard of the 3 Rs but that's good stuff to know. I'll definitely keep this in mind the next time this happens. I would have loved to keep those 2 remaining cells. Thanks for the tip!

Couldn't you cut the other lead off to reuse also? Thanks for sharing. Also, I would probably give the battery to a battery store for recycle. Wonder if they would take it?

Batteries Plus in the PHX area and in the Orlando area will take them....and they don't have to be discharged! And no fee.... at least at the time of this post and the store locations that we deal with...

Great vid. But what i dont get is why the reading was 1.9 v after discharging and then suddenly 0v before soldering the cutted leads together... Did the voltage drop to zero because you shortened the leads?
@dennisbaldwin
@dennisbaldwin 6 лет назад
You may see a little voltage fluctuation when you drain the battery. For example, I recently drained a battery, disconnected it, and then connected the next day. It was able to power the bulb (very dim) for a few seconds. It didn't have any real capacity but still had a small amount of voltage. Shortening the leads should definitely get it to drop all the way down. Be safe when you do this. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Home Depot takes batteries for free and I believe they recycle them, I’d say it’s the best choice and avoids the land fill.

I have used that method. Left a bulb connected to a battery for whole night. Disconnected - and tested with voltmeter - it shows 0V. But then next day voltmeter was showing 2.3V on each cell and battery got puffy. How it got voltage buildup on its own?
@jmm1000
@jmm1000 5 лет назад
good question - maybe they "recover" a bit when not shorted out - probably would stay at zero if left shorted

@dennisbaldwin
@dennisbaldwin 7 лет назад
I solder the positive cable from the XT60 to the bottom tip of the light bulb, which is positive. Then solder the negative cable from the XT60 to the side part of the bulb. This page shows a good diagram of the connections: www.quickstudylabs.com/Electronics%201/FreeSafetyClass/Light_a_lamp.htm

Yeah i've seen and heard most of the ways to discharge them safely,i normally just do the saltwater method myself then i don't have to keep an eye on so to speak,i just put it in an old jam jar with the saltwater and leave it out in the back garden until it's ready for the rubbish. Over the 8 years or so i've been flying RC i've only had to do this 4 times,for the amount of batteries i've got i don't think it's that's to bad. :-)
@dennisbaldwin
@dennisbaldwin 10 лет назад
startazz Thanks for sharing and my experience has been similar in that it's not very often that I have to do this. I just wanted to experiment and see what different ways there are to dispose of them. One user suggested removing the bad cell and use the remaining two. I thought that was a good idea and I may have to give it a try sometime. Take care.

What could happen if you dont drain the cells before disposing?
@dennisbaldwin

+Savire I think worse case is due to humidity or some metal element could cause a short and ultimately lead to a fire.

I work at a yard with city trash trailers. I’ve seen an entire trailer light on fire and the fire department coming out to handle it. Battery fires are nasty since it’s a chemical reaction. All they could do was douse the surrounding material but had to let the chemical fire burn itself out. Then there was a huge mess left for a separate disposal crew. Don’t be a fool, properly discharge and recycle them.

Denis, I'm a bit confused..... Is this not a 3 Cell Li-Po as indicated on the label?? At 0:20 in the video, watching the voltages flash by I see:- All = 14.3 V No1= 7.36 V No2= d2.9 V No3= 7.35 V Something else seems to be wrong with the battery or your cell tester. A single Li-Po cell should read in the vicinity of 3.3V to 4.2 Volts. Your cells read 7.35 V.
@dennisbaldwin
@dennisbaldwin 10 лет назад
lasersbee You got me on this one. I couldn't figure out those values either. I did so much digging around and know my voltage tester is fine. I use it all the time and compare it with my voltmeter. When I hooked up my balance charger it wouldn't let me charge because cell 2 was below the minimum threshold. I read about trickle charging on the NiMh setting, but then I'd have to isolate that cell and bring it up to a voltage where my charger wouldn't complain. Anyway, all that to say I have no clue why those cell voltages were so out of whack. Very frustrating but this battery had been through quite a bit of wear and tear. Thanks for the thoughts and if you come across any other ideas I'd love to hear them.

Thanks for sharing! Problem is what's happened after when you put them in garbage? I'm pretty sure, LIPO are not really recyclable and dangerous for our Nature due to the complex chemistry used inside them :'( Happy weekend Dennis :)

blackmennewstyle I thought so too, but have read a few articles that suggest that it is safe: www.rctoys.com/pdf/thunder-power-disposal-of-old-damaged-lipo-batteries.pdf Not sure what to believe but the best bet is probably to take them to a recycling center. I hope you're doing well and thanks for the comment.

I don't think this is correct. The voltage is obviously not a problem since you drained it completely, but there is some pretty nasty stuff used in making these things. This is stuff I don't think we want seeping into our ground water. I am not sure, but there may still be a fire hazard if they are punctured. The chemicals inside may react with oxygen fairly well even without electric potential. Not sure, just thought that I would comment so that we can all be better safe than sorry.

***** I hear you. I'm not sure what the best way to dispose of them is, but I know discharging them is a necessity. Several articles about lipos suggest that they are landfill safe: www.rctoys.com/pdf/thunder-power-disposal-of-old-damaged-lipo-batteries.pdf But who really knows. The best bet is probably to drop them off at a battery recycling place and let them take care of it. Thanks for the comment.
