Ham Radio Deluxe Digital Master 780 DM780 CW sending with a inexpensive CW interface. See how it can be done and make DX CW contacts easily. Is this is more fun, more exciting than FT8?

Tom Parish thanks for coming by and thank you so much for commenting here. I sincerely appreciate it and I’m glad you found this helpful. There is so much to DM780, it’s like peeling an onion. There’s always something more. Best wishes and 73!

@@HamRadioAdventures you know that's a good analogy. I hadn't considered that. I've had HRD for a year now and I admit I haven't dug in too deep thinking there was not that much there. admitedly a self limiting thought but after reviewing your other recent videos on HRD's DM780 for CW I realize I was quite mistaken. So thank you for taking all the time it took to create thse. I have found a lack of good tutorials for HRD. Glad you are filling that void. appreciatively KB5RF

Great video guy! I'm getting into CW and have a MFJ 495 connected to my PC comm port. How would I type characters in Ham Radio Deluxe to be sent to my Yaesu 857 via the MFJ 495? Which HRD sub program would I use is what I'm asking. Than you sir / KF4ULD

Thanks for the tutorial. Is that screen I see over your shoulder an iPad? Are/can you using/use an iPad for some of your software screens?

Hi Tom, no the smaller screen is the monitor (DVI) for the Icom 7610. I have used Parallels to control software on my PC though. Thanks! 73, K0PIR

Hey brother. I’m using the 7300 with the airspy hf+ with sdr console. I’m using a tv as a monitor using vga cable. If I want to use another smaller monitor, can I use hdmi from the new monitor to the pc without screwing up the sound settings in windows? Only using usb to the 7300. Also using vspe. I just want to run my logging software on the new monitor during the contest this weekend. Will this try to look for sound in the new monitor?

@HamRadioAdventures 5 лет назад
Glock w4zxt Hey thanks for watching and thanks for posting your question here. Yeah, it won’t interfere with what you’re doing. In Windows just check to see what you’re sound settings are first, then hook it up. The default should stay the same and no problems. Setting it up as an extended monitor will probably be the most difficult part 😖 Best 73 and good luck this weekend.

hi I have a question for you, the cable that connects the PC (DB9) and the radio is a CI-V Icom cable. If it is not so you can send me the scheme because I have not understood correctly.
@HamRadioAdventures
@HamRadioAdventures 5 лет назад
To send CW I use a CW interface cable. It has a DB9 on one end that connects to the PC serial port and a straight 1/4 inch plug on the other that plugs into the rear CW key jack on the radio. You can see the diagram on N3FJP website. lol for the link in the description above. Thank you for watching and thank you for commenting here at 73!

How about setting up with CW Type? It is nice simple program.

I have not tried that one yet, but it should work very good with the CW interface cable. Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting. Best to you and yours, 73!

I've been using the RigBlaster Advantage and CW (KY cmd) mode in Ham Radio Deluxe with the Icom 7610. The keyboard does not allow back spacing, which is really annoying! The code speed is set by the 7610, which I found to be strange. I assumed that the 1/4" CW jack was for a straight key. The 7610 is configured for a straight key. The CW mode in HRD does not work with the RigBlaster, but it looks like it allows backspacing over typing errors. Once I type a word in HRD in CW (KY cmd) mode, I cannot backspace to correct typing mistakes! I bought the W1GEE serial to 1/4" CW cable, but my computer doesn't have a serial connection like my older computers, so I will buy a serial card for my Windows 10 computer. Hopefully, using the serial cable will allow me to use the CW mode in HRD, and I will be able to back space over typing errors, before the mistakes are sent out over the air in CW. I can use HRD and the 7610 with MCW, just the CI-V USB cable, but I think using MCW is pretty flaky compared to sending in real CW. After 30 years of inactivity, my CW speed dropped to about 10 wpm. It will take awhile to build my speed back up to 25 wpm. I send CW with the keyboard and receive CW without the computer. I have a keyer paddle, but I never want to use a keyer paddle again. If I have a computer buffer that actually works, I can correct typing mistakes in the buffer and have absolutely perfectly sent CW. KY0L

Dave Borchard Yeah that’s what I found out about the CW KY. It’s a little quirky and another thing I noticed is I can’t run letters together like KN. Using CW with a CW interface works much better. When using a macro, I can go in and edit it just like in the video. Thanks for commenting and confirming those issues. Best 73!

I finally got the CW to send properly using HRD and the W1GEE serial 9 pin DIN to 1/4” cable! I use CW mode in HRD (not CW Key cmd, CW Winkey, or CW SSB). I had to purchase a serial card for my computer because the computer didn’t have a serial connector on it. Initially, I still couldn’t send CW with HRD and the Icom 7610. Then I re-watched your video. There are many places to configure DM 780 within DM 780. Configuring “Options”, “Modes + IDs”, checking the “Enable serial COM port keying” to COM port 6, and selecting “DTR” was the solution that worked. Now, I can send CW properly with the keyboard. The CW speed is set in DM 780 instead of on the Icom 7610. I can type ahead in the buffer, back space over errors, and correct the errors before the text is sent out over the air. So, my sent CW is now perfect, error free. Now all I need to do is to build up my CW receiving speed from 10 wpm to 25 to 30 wpm, my CW speed before I was inactive for 30 years! KY0L

Dave Borchard Yes I use CW in DM780. I use DTR for CW keying in DM780, 4:58 in video. I do not see CTS in DM780. Are you thinking about the HRD rig control connect window? On mine I do not have anything checked in the HRD connect window. That is used just for rig control. In the 7610 I have the key set to paddle because that sets the jack on the front of the radio. I believe the jack on the back of the radio is automatically set to straight key. I don’t see how to change that one. In DM780 on the PTT are you using ham radio deluxe?

Ham Radio with K0PIR Thanks for the CW sending video. Today, I initially had trouble again with the W1GEE able and my new serial card I just installed. The solution was to watch you video again, and I found the setting in DS 780 under the “options” tab as you said in your video. There is a setting in the Icom 7610 for the straight key: Keyer, Edit Set, cw-Key set, key type. You have three choices at that point in the menu: Straight, Bug, and Paddle. I wasn’t able to get enough help from either Icom or HRD support to fix the CW sending problems, but your video had the solution. I still think MCW (CW SSB) is a flaky option in DS 780. Also, CW key cmd is flaky too. I think HRD should fix those serious problems in CW key cmd. The typing buffer works perfectly now. I can type ahead of where the CW is being transmitted. When I make typos, I can backspace and fix the typos before they are sent out over the air. So, now my sent CW is absolutely perfect! I just wish there was a handshaking mode like AMTOR ARQ, where you could rag chew with a digital mode without any errors. PSK31 and RTTY are chocked with errors! FT8 is good for hello/goodbye! JS8CALL is not much more than hello/goodbye. If you ever used the BA-1 remote control, I’d like to watch that video. I bought a BA-1 second generation remote control software for the Icom 7610 that I’ll be working on soon. Thanks again for your very helpful videos! KY0L
