Hey guys! I’m Brad, and I make how-to videos. I do custom painting projects, guitar painting, airbrushing, spray can painting, wood working, and a variety of other finishing work and tutorials. Please subscribe and check out my channel for more!
In this video I demonstrate a new painting technique on a guitar that can be done with spray cans. All of the paint used in this video was rustoleum brand paint that can be found at most hardware stores.
Don't forget to ask your questions or submit video questions if you want to show me something.
Thanks for watching.

@BradAngove

You should clear coat it after to protect it. Buffing is to flatten out the finish and give it that mirror shine. You can decide if you want to or not, but you probably will want to. Have a look at one of my videos on sanding and polishing.

Thanks for the reply, also I always thought it's better to have a few layers of the paint before the final clear coat? Although I know you say in the video you can't put too much on over the soap right? But if one good coat is good enough then I'll crack on with it and show my paint job once it's done.
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 9 лет назад
Having several coats of paint under the clear is only beneficial in that it provides proper coverage. After that, the clear coat provides your protection, so it doesn't really matter. This is of course different than something like a house, where you do not clear coat. For something like that you need a few decent coats to give the finish some longevity. I look forward to seeing how your project turns out.

hey brad. LOVE this technique. i was recently inspired by kiesels "splatter" guitars, and was thinking, could the dish soap be splattered or is it too thick? coul you use a dust can (compressed air) to push the soap into a more "splatter" pattern? how do you feel aout holofoil/holoflash?
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 4 года назад
You could create a splatter pattern with the dish soap, but it would probably be easier just to go ahead and create that pattern with the paint itself.

@BradAngove
@BradAngove 9 лет назад
Did you watch the video without sound haha? It's dish soap. You'll want a satin clearcoat for a satin finish. You can try a satin enamel, or a 35 degree sheen lacquer perhaps (depending on your paint type). Or if you take a look at my how to paint your guitar by hand series I show how to do a satin finish with a wipe on poly.
@dogbiscuit1649

Nice one Brad, that looks very cool. I'll try that on my p bass I think... I don't often use spraycans, but have done a few basic effects & coverage with airbrushes, and I like inventive masking and the mad results, not come across dish soap masking before though! (I use latex masking fluid). I've just discovered I've got to respray the front of the Strat I'm doing as I hit a thin patch on an edge while wet & dry-ing. Gutted. Any advice? Its going to be satin finished, so shouldn't be too nasty... Gonna have to invest in a compressor and sprayguns...Nice one. Mick.
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 9 лет назад
+Michael Jones Hi Mick. I'm glad you like the paintjob. You can actually use this masking technique with airbrushes as well as long as you're using a paint that will hold up when you wipe off the soap. What kind of paint were you using on the strat?
@dogbiscuit1649
@dogbiscuit1649 9 лет назад
Acrylic car paint- its Halfords Electric orange, going to go over the front again today. I might look for some water based polyurethane to clear coat her if its compatible. I'll spray some on some scrap to sacrifice.
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 9 лет назад
Sounds like a good plan. Spot repair is unfortunately very difficult with those kinds of paints, so going over the whole front is likely a good option.

I tired this on one of my guitars and failed miserably lol. I'm going to read though all these comments and try again but here's where I know I messed up (so someone else doesn't make the same mistakes). Don't roast me too hard. I already know I made some dumb mistakes lol. Everything was going great but I think I put waaayyy too many coats on top of the soap. I basically finished off the can and it must have been 6 or more coats. That was bad lol. Then, I waited waaayyy too long to try to get the soap layers off. It wasn't coming off easily and I was afraid of messing up the top coat with a rag so I didn't want wipe it. I had seen someone else on RU-vid use water to wash off the soapy layer so I used a water flosser (made for teeth) to start getting off the soap. That was the big mistake. Water got into some of the cavities that weren't taped off and the wood swelled up so bad that the body got cracks all over it. At this point in not even sure it's repairable. Currently looking for a replacement body on Reverb lol. TLDR: Don't put the top coat in too thick, don't let it dry too long, don't use water to remove the soap.

@BradAngove

Soap drying isn’t really an issue, but there’s no reason to wait more than a couple minutes at most. The soap running/leveling itself over time is the issue.

Hi Magnus. I could explain it to you, but I have a better idea. I have an entire series of videos where I repaint a Black Ibanez a different colour. It's on my channel. Hey brother my names Craig long time subscriber first time commenter was just wondering how long after you put the final colour on was it that you wiped down the guitar? Outside that I love this video and have already sent it to all my mates - all three of them
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 10 лет назад
Haha all three of them. Thanks for your comment Craig. I had to make sure that last coat of paint was dry before wiping it down. Because I put the paint on lightly, I only had to wait about 30 minutes, but I could easily have waited longer. The paint won't stick to the soap, so as long as you don't leave it for a couple days so that the soap becomes harder to take off you should be fine.

@BradAngove

That was dishsoap. It acts as a mask for the paint. It is possible to use it on something that isn't flat, but it will run down the sides and mask off wherever it is. You would end up with a bit of a different effect if you did it on something like a bike helmet.

+Amanda Jacobs You need to use a damp cloth and clean all of the soap off carefully. If there is still some soap on there, the clear won't stick to it just like the paint didn't. I would likely scuff the paint with a scotch pad before applying the clear in order to give the clear something to grab on to.

For an art project in school we had to show dichotomy, which is the difference of colours or some sh*t. So I asked if I could paint one of my old bass's, so I did, painted it black first then put "soap" on it, then painted it red over top, and when I was done I thought wow what a pile of shit, then I wiped it with a rag and washed it, it was great got 98% on it. Thanks a lot your videos really helped me! And even now I just want to paint one of my home made guitars from wood shop, and I'm browsing your videos looking for an example, planing on doing a tiger or something like that, I'll let you know how that turns out!

Brad Angove u know i was going to do that...but now i have decided to again use this technique, again. first im painting it black, then ill make a spider web with the soap, and then paint it white...wipe of the soap and have a spider web, then ill put splotches of red all over it, at least that what i was thinking because i only have red, black and white spray cans when im done i could send u picks of both of them

Hai Brad. Your work hv inspired me to upgrade the paint on my Guitars with spray cans. May I know 1) how long do I have to wait till I do the pattern with the dish liquid; 2) how long after u spary the gold metallic paint that u clean the dish liquid out; and 3) did u use the brown pad to scrap off the dish liquid or just a normal cloth would do... Appreciate your views.
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 3 года назад
1. Let it dry fully. At least a few hours. 2. Depends on how thick you apply it. Usually about 15 minutes. 3. A normal cloth is fine.

I'm a little Confused, so you spray painted black and white striped across the guitar, then you spray painted a brownish color over top, wouldn't that just go over top of the black and white striped? how did the black and white line pop out? and could you please tell me the paint you used? thanks a lot this video really helps!
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 9 лет назад
+Shenal Wanasingha I used dish soap to create a pattern over top of the black and white paint. The new paint over top of that doesn't stick to the dish soap, but it sticks everywhere else. I let that new paint dry, and then I wiped off the dish soap and all the paint that was on the soap came off with it. That let the black and white part show through where the soap had been. I used enamel spray cans for this.

How Many Coats of the Clear do you use? And Dry Time in Between?
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 9 лет назад
I didn't use any clear on this, the the coats and dry time depend on the type of clear. For enamel clear I tend to do three coats about 10 minutes apart.

The morr i look at the guitar, the more i like it! That was a strike of a genius, Brad ;). I have a fewcquestions about that: is it pure dish soap, or did you mix it with something else? And: was the video in real-time?! How long is the waiting time from the last wile of the copper layer to the wiping off the dish soup?
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 8 лет назад
The dish soap is straight out of the bottle. I didn't mix it. I believe the footage of me spraying is sped up x2. It should have music, but something went wrong with the upload haha. I think I waited about 15 minutes after the copper before wiping off the dish soap.

Hey Brad thx. I teach kids how to build their own guitar. I've used alcohol with powdered dye, and it's worked well. I'm thinking of doing this because it seems a lot easier and quicker. Would a can polyurethane finish affect the paint job?
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 8 лет назад
+pitamoncha2112 This is pretty quick and easy. Are you thinking of using polyurethane for the whole paint job, or just a polyurethane clear coat to finish off?

Poly just to finish off.
@pitamoncha2112
@pitamoncha2112 8 лет назад
I usually paint with dyes and alcohol and clear poly to finish off. Several coats.
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 8 лет назад
You should be able to do this spraying technique with polyurethane spray cans from start to finish; which would reduce the likelihood of a compatibility problem. If you're going to do it with enamels like I did, you're probably best off to use an enamel clear coat as well.
@TheMetalMonster

What clear coat should I use for metallic enamel without the losing the metallic effect? i've had issues with a test piece and dont want to ruin the guitar
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 8 лет назад
Clear coat shouldn't mess with the metallic effect. Sometimes the reflective metal paint reacts poorly to clear though. I'm not sure why. Are you using the sparkly/pearlescent stuff, or the reflective finish metallic?
@TheMetalMonster
@TheMetalMonster 8 лет назад
found one that worked I was using rustoleum metallic gold paint+primer and the ONLY one that didnt turn it into a sad cloudy gold was krylon colormaster acrylic crystal clear. Even the krylon with rust protection had the same effect. But thanks for replying man lol

Do you sand down a metallic paint before laquering? Im looking to spray a strat bronze
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 6 лет назад
That’s a tough question actually. Ideally you would sand it lightly to promote adhesion, but with metallics that can often screw up how they look. I probably wouldn’t. Just make sure your paints are properly compatible.

nice trick. I actually watched alot of your tutorials on spray painting and have tried some of your advice on an old BC rich I had. it actually came out pretty smooth and legit looking after all the polishing. I'm just waiting on the hardware to arrive so I don't know how the tone sounds yet. do you think the spray paint would affect the tone of the guitar?
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 8 лет назад
+sluggz956 On a solid body electric guitar, I think any effect on the tone would be minute enough that you wouldn't be able to notice the difference.

Hey Brad, am building my own guitar and i currently have an alder body that's only been sanded. I've been leaning towards staining the body but this looks amazing and now I'm not sure! What would you recommend for a first timer and would I need to use a grain fill before i start?
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 7 лет назад
Staining or dyeing is always a nice option if you've got a dog looking piece of wood. Alternatively, you can do a paint job with transparent paints. You may even be able to apply this technique to that option if you think it will look good. You can grain fill with a dark tinted filler to accent the grain, or you can skip that step and just be diligent when sealing the guitar.
