Great video and explanation. I've started to see more of these turns when officiating, so I wanted to better understand the mechanics of the turn. You mention that the most important point is that you touch the wall on your back. It would be worth mentioning that equally important, is that you leave the wall on your front. I'd say there's some examples in your video where it's 'benefit of doubt' territory whether the swimmer is on their back or their breast at the point of leaving the wall. It would be a tough call for a poolside official (especially at full speed), but as underwater camera video is starting to be allowed, it might be something to be more aware of. Thanks again though.

The Hosszu turn at 7:15 is very different from the others in the video. Notice how her wall-touching hand recovers completely underwater and she ends up facing the opposite direction.

Hey there! I was a competitive swimmer from the age of 7 till the age of 14 and suddenly I moved countries and for one reason or another I never practiced swimming again. Anyway, last week I started going to a swimming pool to at least do the sport I love the most 3-4 times a week to feel I am moving my body and also enjoying it (I HATE THE GYM!!!!). Anyway, the first time I went I got a cramp in my calf muscle and so I had to stop: I guess it's because 1- I hadn't done any exercise in a very long time and 2- I didn't stretch before going in the pool (stupid me lol). Anyway, the two following times nothing happened to me but I have been thinking of one specific thing: I want to improve my kick. My kicking style is good, I have the good technique but because I haven't been practising for a long time, I feel if I kick for like 50m I will get another muscle cramp... Do you have any tips in order not to get my legs so exhausted after completing 25m just by a simple freestyle with legs and arms?? Because I feel I am mostly using my arms and I'd like to know how not to get that tired by kicking... Also, if I start practicing lets say 50 free kicks, and then rest and then again 50 kicks... my muscles will cramp again... Anyway sorry for this enormous message and love your videos! keep them up!

As i understand it, the key point to not DQing is that when the touch happens, the body position is 90 degrees (or slightly less). So my question is, *after* the legal touch has happened, can the swimmer's body rotate in either direction to get the feet to the wall? Every video i see has people using the touching arm/hand to push backwards and get the forehead to rotate towards where the knees are (like a front flip). But all of my kids (and even me when i got in the pool to try it) feel like pushing into the wall with the leading arm/hand and getting the head to rotate backwards (like a bucket turn, but on our side) is more natural. The obvious(?) answer is that whatever the pros are doing must be the fastest, but any thoughts on going the backwards direction, or is a bucket turn better at that point? The bucket turn on your side is still legal, correct? Thanks!

@@FaresKsebati Not sure I'm coordinated to not get DQ'd in a USM swim meet, do you have a white board Wednesday on the bucket turn?

I can do flawless flip turn. Bucket turn is too tiring. And can't do crossover turn at all. Either too deep or got stuck half way.
