Hi all. Love these videos! I am from a country where metal roofing sheets are popular. Watching you guys shingle roofs, I must say it's a skill and an art. Seeing you tackle that valley with shingles... damn I would not have known what to do. I mean I think roofers in my country take that for granted as with metal roof you install your valley flashings lay your roof sheets and call it a day.

This is 50/50 on the right way, unusual circumstances for sure.During a major rain storm I think Id rather have it the way baby cub did it . But then again the steeper slope will shed faster but less flow. I guess you called it right once you take in the snow and ice situation.Good job

Always cut the steeper pitch. Fly the smaller pitch by. Gravity is easy to watch work, roofing is about gravity. Seeing you fix it speaks volumes. Most don’t..... but then I wouldn’t have a job😂

You're installing shingles in a pocket in Utah where u get deep snow and ice. Amazing. Why not install a layer of base Self adhered and a layer of cap sheet. Solid sheets beat shingles in low slope area.
@JTREJO22
@JTREJO22 3 года назад
That is exactly what I was going to suggest. We always do SA BASE and Cap. In we are in West Texas. No issues after we got a foot of snow this past month. Can’t say much about the other companies here. Nobody here even tears off felt or installs ice and water.

In boycubs defense. I would’ve laid the roof the way he did.. though the dormers (appear) to be steeper than the main roof, sq footage is significantly less, and that spot between is going to bottleneck either way with snow.. my train of thought but if someone can give me good stats/figures to go off of I’ll forfeit haha.

And when I cali cut valleys, I always run a secondary bead of tar underneath the course of shingles that I lay parallel to the valley so even if that course doesn't seal 100%, I have a second backup against the moisture. So will a marble be running faster at 20' going down a 4/12, than it would be going at 6' down a 6/12? I'm thinking maybe Boycub got it right. Or, if you were in a bicycle race, do you think that you could get going faster down a 6/12 that was 6' long than someone else who was coasting down a 4/12 for 20 feet? I'll bet kids at a skateboard park would be good at answering something like this. Or, if you were on a hill that was steep, but it was only 3' high, and someone else was on a hill that was 6' high, and those hills were on a perfectly flat valley, and you both let balls roll down at the same time, which ball would go the furthest? Would it even depend on the slope? Would slope even matter? One would get to the flat valley quicker, but which ball would go farther before it stopped?
@NWIVeteranConstruction
@NWIVeteranConstruction 3 года назад
It's not always speed or volume. Pitch plays a huge part in how the water will behave at the bottom and snow especially. The snow will melt n freeze multiple times and it will be way easier for it to find its way in opposite of how I did it

honestly think you are wrong, water doesn't run up hill no matter what direction you go in, where you're getting the most water running down in one direction is the way your valley should overlap. You think just because snow is building up in the valley it's going to run up that 4/12? unless there is ice damming its going to run down. water takes the easiest path always 100% and if you ARE ice damming, no overlap is going to help because it's going to run up over the topside of the shingle. You tore off his shingles just to prove a point that probably wasn't worth proving.. Now, if it was a 4/12 running down onto 12/12 dormers, i might agree but your pitch difference is shit all
