How to do a Penn reel handle knob replacement - a cheap fix to the problem

This video shows how to replace a broken handle knob on a Penn reel on the cheap. This process will work on other reels as well. You don't need to buy a new handle or expensive knob upgrade in order to get the reel fishing again. In this video, I snap off the post. If this doe not work for you, you can drill it out or hacksaw it off.

I just bought an old jigmaster off of eBay in great condition at a good price, bought the drag upgrade, and a newer rod clamp. Was looking to upgrade the handle so thank you for all the videos you have on this reel including this one!!! Just boarded a plane heading to Destin, FL and am looking forward to try this reel out for the first time. Your videos definitely inspired me to buy this classic.

Great replacement knob idea! If you want to go a step fancier, use a button head socket cap screw.

@2nd Chance Tackle one thing, the knob stem on Ocean City reels can be more substantial and require cutting and drilling which was a pretty simple task. I found that out this morning. Still a great video and tip

I was looking for exactly this solution. I have a siezed (green) handle on a jigmaster that I want to replace. I never would have thought about using a cabinet knob!

Hello Dennis. A little late on this video but try using some delrin washers instead of the metal. Much smoother and no metal on metal friction. Lots of guys using them for the under gear washer on the older Penn reels with good results.

I do use the stainless. I don't use a washer as I have had some trouble later with them wearing and creating sloppy play over time - Dennis

Hi Dennis, thanks a lot for all those wonderful videos! I have this question for you: Have you ever tried installing a vintage Penn knob (the Bakelite ones) in newer spinning reel handles? I love the way the old knobs look like, and on the other hand I don't like the new ones at all. I have a Fierce IV reel and would love to put a Penn Squidder knob (or a bigger one) as a replacement. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I have not done that. The original handles were pressed on and peened. I cannot do that, even if I could find the NOS knob to do that

I have a senator 9/0 and the part that has the drag and handle is not tight to the reel. It works but it rocks back and forth. Im not sure how to tighten it

This may be a broken gear sleeve or pin that holds it or it could be the bridge. You will need to take the reel apart to check and you may need a replacement part in order to repair the reel. - Dennis

hi dennis on the penn squidder is the plastic crank knob pressed on can it ne removed to replace mine cracked

It is peened on. You can snap it off to drill it out from behind to leave the original hole exposed and then replace it with an aftermarket handle - Dennis

Can a Penn 155 be converted from right to left ? I cant find anything to say if it can be done. Thanks, Phil.

No. Penn made a left handed edition to the reel, the 155L, but converting it from right to left would basically mean you have to get the components for the 155L gear side plate

Great fix, can this be done with the old penn 700 series spinning reels? I've run into the same issue with them.

I haven't done this with a spinning reel. I have seen plenty of the aftermarket ball bearing handle knobs on EBAY and other sites, so I would believe you can knock or drill out the stud and do a similar replacement. I think I would go for the ball bearing aftermarket knob here as there is so much more cranking in cast and retrieve mode without he spinning reel - Dennis

Do you know if you can change the standard handle on a pen 309 level wind with a power handle.

Yes - there are handle upgrades available. Check with MysticParts.com - they offer an offset handle and can tell you other options. The standard Penn Jigmaster handle will fit the 309, so any power handles made for that will fit the 309 - Dennis

Michael - unfortunately, that wasn't rust, it was bracing, where the chrome wore away. There is no easy fix to that. No sense trying to rechrome it, better just to get a new handle at that point. For surface corrosion and salt build up, you can use an automotive chrome polish and some 0000 steel wool to make if clean and shine - Dennis

@@michaeldob2153 I would try to remove it with a penetrating oil line WD40 or Liquid Wrench. Just spray it down with a heavy coat and let it sit. After a while, you can try a small wire brush to remove the gunk - Dennis

The typical Penn handle knob is 2 inches long (point to point) and 3/4 inch in diameter. In metrics, that is 51mm long and 19mm diameter - Dennis

You will be surprised to see how long these last if you use the stainless cabinet knob and a stainless screw. If you use other knobs, the finish will wear off and if you use the steel screws, they will rust, but even then, it takes a while - Dennis

Hi Dennis, just found your channel which is very informative with easy to follow advise and film footage. I recently purchased a Penn 320 Lever drag reel on eBay. Is there any chance you could do a strip down and service film on this reel. I plan to use this reel for Tope, conger, and large pollack whilst charter fishing off the North Cornish coast and would like to give the reel a once over. Thanks you.

I don't have the 320 LD in my shop and I will add it to my list of projects to film the next time one comes In for service. I did a video on the GLS 45 which is similar.
