This video shows the common mechanical failures of Penn JigMasters. I have been repairing JigMasters for commercial charter boats for years and the heavy use and lack of maintenance has caused most of these problems to surface. This is normally a very reliable reel for the average person who keeps the reel well maintained. This is a part of a series on why reels fail. This accompanies another video I did on the JigMaster frame problems.
I have been servicing reels for over 20 years and am sharing my experience. If you enjoy the video, please "like" it. If you want to see more, please subscribe. Questions or comments? I reply to all.
Thank you - Dennis

Great video I really love these reels I actually have 3 in my arsenal 1 500 and 2 500s. On the 500 I have upgraded to a Tiburon aluminum frame carbonfiber 5 stack drag with an upgraded SS gear shaft along with a Penn powerhandle.

Thanks - I love them as well. They are a great value that last a long time when properly maintained. The 500s, with the bearing vs. bushings make it a killer reel, similar to the Daiwa Sealing 50H. I like that one as well. Very versatile and a good value.

Thanks for theses great hideous. I have Penn 920 level wind that was an answer’s artery gift from my wife over 35 years ago. Do you have or know where I can get parts for level wind mechanism?
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle Год назад
Unfortunately the parts are no longer available through Penn's parts distributors. You will need to find a secondary source, like eBay or perhaps a donor reel for sale that will have the parts you need. Thanks for asking - Dennis

Hi Dennis, Thank you for your videos, I just found you as I was searching for a solution to my problem with my 70's era Penn Jigmaster which I purchased circa 1976,if memory serves me. I found the exact issue in an online message group so I'll repost and if you can offer any advice I would greatly appreciate it. My plan is to send it off to Penn for repair. Here it is : If I tilt the reel to the left (ratchet side down), the spool spins extremely nice. Then, when I tilt the spool to the right (handle side down), the spool shifts to the right and it rubs and stops right away. When the spool is to the left, it is centered and all good. The problem is on the right sidr. It seems that there is a 1/8th inch gap that causes the spool to have too much side to side play. I have not tried this myself but this guy did with temporary success: Oh and btw, I tried switching out the spools with another spool. At first it did work, but as I tested the reel by speed cranking and free spooling the eccentric lever, I heard a pop and now that other spool has the exact same problem...it has a 1/8th inch side to side play and it scraps when tilted twards the right. Also, the bearing caps on both ends are tightened all the way....and still, 1/8th side to side play.... ??? So if you have any thoughts, Dennis I would appreciate it very much. Thank you, Lou

Have you tried tightening the spool bearing on the non-gear side plate? That can take up the slack and close the gap. Watch my video on spool adjustment here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Qc6Kg6a2C5k.html If that doesn't work. I can save you time and money by repairing the reel vs. Penn. If you would like me to service it, send me a note to my email - 2ndchancetackle@gmail.com and I will send you the details on service fees and turnaround time. Thank you for asking - Dennis

I have an older made in USA Penn 109 reel that looks almost new. I picked it up at a yard sale a couple of years ago to use as a catfish rig. When in casting mode the handle turns. Could it be the spring you were showing at the first of this video, or is it just the way the reel is made? I have and use an older Penn 209 that works really well.
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 4 года назад
Jeff - theat is the way the 109 is supposed to work. It is a knuckle buster that does not have a disconnect to let the handle sit in free spool. The Penn 9 has that feature and is more like your 209. You do not need to take the 109 apart or fix anything. It is working as designed - Dennis

Hi Dennis, I have several jigmasters and they all get a string vibration when casting or in free spool, is there anything I can do to fix that issue?
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 4 года назад
If it is in casting mode, it would be lack of grease or bad bearings, which would need to be replaced. Probably lack of grease. Take the side plate off and put a drop of oil in the side plate bearings on both sides of the reel and see if that makes a difference - Dennis

Dennis - I have recently bought a used Jigmaster with the plastic spool. The spool shows what appears to be a small amount of damage in the center of the spool where a person might normally tie the line when beginning to spool the line. I am considering replacing the plastic spool with an aluminum spool before spooling line for the first time. From photos it appears that some metal spools have a smaller diameter (vs the plastic spool) through this cross area of the spool. If this is the case, this would in effect give a metal spool greater line capacity than a plastic spool. Do you know if this is truly the case or is it just an optical illusion apparent only to my eyes? Thanks for any insight. I really love the videos and used one yesterday to disassemble that jig master, clean and lube it and then reassemble it. Not exactly a piece of cake, but mission accomplished with a minimum of redos. Thanks for the great videos!!
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 5 лет назад
Howard - sorry for the late reply. I don't know how I missed this one. Yes - The metal spool has a larger capacity. It is ideal for drop fishing. The plastic spool holds less line and is lighter weight. This is the one you want for casting. - Dennis

Dennis, My Jigmaster No. 500 faceplate will not remove when i unscrew the spool exchange gear. Reel still operates fine. What should I do to correct this ? Thanks. Charles

@2ndChanceTackle 5 лет назад
That is a tough question, literally and figuratively. When they are hard to back out, it is usually that they are loaded with salt or a reel seat screw vibrated loose and is making it harder on you. When it is hard to do, it takes muscle and patience and a little help. I recommend taking the non gear side plate off by removing the 6 screws. Then take the spool out. This will give you a partial view inside to see what is going on. Next, get a penetrating oil like WD40 and use a lot of it on the trim ring - a good soak, and let it sit a while. This will help dissolve salt and dirt as well as provide some lubrication to help. I would spray the ring from both sides. Next I would reassemble the reel to add the spool and side plate back on for stability. Once that is done, unscrew the thumb screw and remember to keep it pulled out when you go to turn the plate counterclockwise.. Simply backing the screw off, without pulling it out (it is spring loaded) is not enough. The rest is where I started - muscle and patience. Do not pry, use pliers, etc. You will most likely crack the side plate if you try that. Let me know how it goes. Thanks for asking - Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle Dennis...spot on recommendation. I submerged the face plate in WD40 and no "armstrong" required... after a few minutes a counterclockwise turn while pulling out the spring loaded screw and easy release was accomplished. Interesting , the ring did not appear corroded or salty... just a small amount of grit prevented proper functioning. Thank you for sharing your expertise. I was initially so frustrated I'm sure I would have been that guy that cracked the faceplate . Thanks again, Charles

Hi, I have an older 500 that is in mint condition in and out but I'm curious as to why it has so much play in the handle when making the spool move. Th3 handle can move a bit back and forward before it seems to affect the spool. Is there a part I can swap to tighten things up? Other than that it seems like new. Are just like thst or is something in need of repair?
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 5 лет назад
There is a little play in the gear sleeve that hold the anti- reverse ratchet, so yes, some play there. It sound like the reel may be dry and need some lubrication on the yoke and spool gear. If the spool gear doesn't move easily, then there can be a lag in it engaging the spool and the condition you describe Amy occur. Remove the side plate and put a drop of oil on the spool gear. No need to disassemble the reel for now. Make sure you get oil (3 in 1 oil is fine for this test). Make sure you get the oil on the outside of the gear. Then reassemble and see if that helps. If it does, go ahead and take the reel apart and use a reel grease on the yoke to correct the problem - Dennis

The spool on the 500L is anodized Aluminum. The spool on the 500 is chrome plated metal

You have to replace the anti-reverse dogs about every 50 years. Maybe 10 years if it's a rental reel. What a maintenance headache!
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 5 лет назад
The biggest problem I get from the rental reels is on the newer models. The gear sleeve freezes to the bridge post if the reel is used heavily and left to sit for a while. The gear sleeves also round out at the handle shoulders. I rarely see other issues beyond normal drag replacements - They are built to last - Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle Dennis: I just rebuilt my Jigmaster 505HS (ball bearing) which was the first expensive saltwater reel I bought, back in 1988 or so. I had never completely rebuilt it, but I had lubed it from time to time. After cleaning out all the greasy muck ("junk" as you say), lubing and reassembling, it feels like new. The bridge post on this model is stainless steel and was still bright and shiny. The bridge plate is heavy brass and cleaned up nicely. This is my most used reel, and it still feels great. You've really got me inspired with your videos.

Thanks for the kind words, Garth. The 505 goes head to head with one of my favorites the Daiwa Sealine 50H. Both will last a lifetime and those bearings really do improve the Jigmaster's performance. - Dennis
