One thing to remember, when 'faking' an accent it tends to be over exaggerated and most the time someone that speaks with that accent will be able to tell the difference (unless an insane amount of work went into getting it right). Voice over artists will often times not get the accent perfect, but to the ear of someone that is not regularly exposed to it will generally not be able to tell.

John Connor If I'm going to write dialogue with a specific accent, I want to be accurate. Not simply for the sake of being accurate (which is important), but also to help my reader better visualize the scene. Changing a "this" to "dis" can help a reader to hear that accent in their minds. Following stereotypes won't help me write an accent for a character.

Just putting this out there: I take all "Learn X-ish accent" videos with a grain of salt. I, for one, am here to learn what most people recognize as the "stereotypical" Irish accent, in that you'd recognize it as Irish immediately, even if it's not really an accent Irish have. All accents I use are farcical and are meant to be amusing to the listener, not an actual representation of how certain people sound. That's just my approach. I'm from New Jersey and when I hear an exaggerated "Joisey" accent I don't take offense because I know it's all in good humor. Just my approach as well as food for thought for those who feel insulted by "Learn X-ish accent" videos.

As an Irish person I have to say that most of your observations would be considered "stage Irish". You did hit on a few valid points and I'm glad you mentioned the Dublin accent because for such a small country we have a huge amount of regional variations in accents that differ a great deal. It is a constant source of amusement to me when actors in films and television try to do Irish accents as they rarely if ever get it quite right.Good try though :-)

This is shockingly bad. Where most people go wrong when trying to imitate the Irish accent is failing to realise that there are in fact multiple accents on this tiny little island. I'm from county mayo and I sound completely different to someone from Donegal which is a mere two hour drive away. Seriously, I know some Irish people that have a hard time understanding other individuals from Donegal. When I was in college I had to sit between a lad from Kerry and a lad from Dublin and translate for them because they genuinely could't understand each other. So if you want to do an Irish accent first you need to isolate a region or county and learn that accent. A great example of this is James McAvoy in a movie called inside I'm dancing. To my ear its a perfect Dublin accent. But I'm sure you a native Dub it probably sounds off. Actually if you're a native Dub and you've made it to the end of this ramble, please go and watch that movie and let me know if it actually is a decent accent. Anywho, there a loads of accents, pic one don't just mash them all together.

+Flabfactory I think this is more intended for those who try to do voice acting, and need to imitate a recognizable 'Iris accent'. I'm sure it's not going to be the same to an Irish man, but tha main public will recognize it as Irish, and will believe the illusion that the actor is Irish.
@decidiousrex
@decidiousrex 9 лет назад
+Flabfactory Dude, same goes for EVERY accent. An accent is a regional dialect, every accent is going to inevitably be an amalgamation of several smaller ones, or at least prefer certain more popular ones while neglecting less known ones. Trying to sell an "Irish" accent to an Irishman is not going to work for hopefully obvious reasons. On the same note, I doubt you could pick out regional dialects of a New York accent, which differs massively based on the borough. That's different accents within the same city. Yet you'll hear of "New York accents" all the time.
@NatashaRead
@NatashaRead 9 лет назад
+Flabfactory All Irish accents seem to be impossible for non-Irish people to do, people seem to either go down the leprechaun route or the inner-city Dublin route, and very few people can make it sounds credible. I've never seen "Inside I'm Dancing", but another good Dublin accent is Jamie Bell's character, Edgar, from Snowpiercer (though how someone who grew up on a train with no other Irish people around managed to retain a Dub accent is beyond me) but somehow he manages to do a spot on job! Maybe other accents get mangled too and we don't notice because we're not from said country, but it does seem to be very rare for an actor to do a credible Irish accent, no matter which dialect.
@jay1932

The fact that no Irish person sounds like 'dat' or whatever, but the accents vary from different counties or even towns! I am from Waterford and Waterford is often pronounced Waw-er-ford with the 't' often excluded. Yet, I know lots of people who do pronounce the 't' and are from Ireland. A lot of different words like 'craic', are used. Some of these are derived from the Celtic language Gaeilge, which a lot of Irish people are fluent in. This changes the sounds of different English words, often the vowels. But even the language Gaeilge (pronounced Gwaylg-eh) varies from different regions of Ireland. Már sin, tá an-tuirseach agam anois, oíche maith. Slán!!

Gareth, I owe you a debt of gratitude and very likely a whole lot more. Using primarily this video plus my own ear and some texts that lend themselves well to this accent, I learned how to speak with an Irish accent so that even some Irish folk at my church in Nanaimo, Canada say that I do very well. On October 12, 2018 I'll be giving a recital at my church in which I will be both singing and speaking in an Irish accent on two different parts of the recital. The recital will be uploaded to RU-vid and I'll be happy to send you the link, but while I was thinking about it, I wanted you to know how much help you were. Still working on my Scottish accent and my yodelling, but I return to your videos time and again. You have my thanks and if I had any money, I'd be sharing that with you too, Laddie-Buck. (I know. That expression is Scottish.) ;)

This video is very helpful as I have the ordinary British accent and I needed to know the Irish accent for a performance and now I do. Very useful and understandable tips....

Kieren Sutton DO NOT USE THIS VIDEO FOR YOUR PERFORMANCE. If you want to get the Irish accent, listen to Irish people talking. This man has done a terrible job of representing our accent, nobody can really do it so just learn from us. Look up Irish interviews from The Late Late Show or look up the youtube account Facts. You'll learn a much better accent in no time :)

It's a very strong and stereotypical Irish accent, most people in Ireland don't speak this strongly. Soften it up a whole lot and you may have a halfway decent accent.

I don't really have any knowledge of accents, but I think people are criticizing him to much. When doing voice acting it's quite difficult to get a good accent. Thus, voice actors often do like this guy and exaggerate a lot to get a somewhat distinctive accent. Now sure it's stereotypical, but outsiders often do exaggerate everything which they aren't to familiar with.
