personally i don't tell people to look up, I tell them to keep their head where they feel the most comfortable, because too many a times i find a lot of people hyper extend their backs in an effort to keep their chest high and head up, this back hyper extension in turns causes the abs to relax and placing the lumbar spine in a compromising position.

Right, properly one should come under the bar evenly. Further it's bad to step up into the bar as she did, as that can lead to instability, better to push up into it and "feel" the weight before stepping out.

1. Bar should be set up between your shoulders and pecs. She shouldn't have to tip-toed to lift the bar. 2. That was NOT a full squat, full squat needs proper depth (hip joint below knee joint) 3. When you squat you shouldn't put that stress on the neck, she kept looking in the mirror. Spine should be neutral all the time. 4. Other points specially if you want to teach squatting, safe grip (close grip), toes slightly pointing out to help ROM, hip drive and squeeze gluteus, .......................a lot more she forgot to mention.

+Erika Macias What do you mean, between shoulders and pecs? That would be a frontal squat. Other than that, you were spot on in your assessment. So many personal trainers do not perform exercises appropriately themselves.

+YouDontKnowMe I meant her bar was racked to high it needed to be just one more level down you shouldn't do tip toe....if you start loading more weight /heavy weight you can hurt yourself before even start doing the squats

you might have an old groin pull or a groin instability secondary to an old low back strain, I have found postural exercises help this sort of thing a lot.

Breathing in/out under load is wrong. Always hold breath during the movement, called a valsalva manuver. It is protective and natural. All these so called certified teachers saying the inhale dow and exhale up have been wrong all along.

jesus christ, they are just squats, everyone thinks they know how to do the perfect squat. it isnt that deep. this lady is fine, good video. i was just looking to make sure what it looks like, i like this lady a lot. chill everyone. you a pro? well make your own video then.

@def1l3r Some people can't go any lower due to improper flexibility in the hip, which in turn leads to rounding of the spine. There are a lot of people I see who go below parallel but don't have the proper mobility, stability, and flexibility to execute it properly, which does more damage than good.

Felt as though my lower back feels slightly sore and I thought my form was just like this, maybe beginner DOMS? Or is it really improper form?

@Az260790UK I think it's better to dump the weight off of your back instead of worrying about the bar staying on your back if you fall forward and pinning you down to the floor.

Another thing that I find very sad and disturbing here. All the comments from people bashing the other posters that are merely pointing out the obvious flaws with this video. The main argument? She is certified! You can get certified online without ever touching a bar. Just because someone is professional doesn't mean you shouldn't question their word and do some research for yourself. Having a degree does not mean you are automatically smarter than someone who doesn't.

@rotas5s5 yea when your shoulders aren't that big it's hard to do some sort of squat without padding, cause it hurts your shoulders, I think she does it this way because maybe it doesn't hurt. I always put on a thick jacket for this, which sounds funny, but it gives me a bit of padding when having bar on shoulders.

This is a full squat guys I don't get why all of you hates this chick,personally I stick to how she does this and my quads grow like crazy,with full depth squat I have higher chance of getting injured or lower back problem,I have seen some people do half squats and they have far superior quad development than people doing full squat,after all it's all about the mind muscle connectivity

@juniorme87 I don't care if she works for Gold's Gym and is a certified personal trainer. If she wants to set herself up as a teacher, she needs to go beyond what she learned in her weekend certification course. She's not completely terrible but is definitely not giving quality instruction. For those who want to learn the basics of barbell exercises, I highly recommend "Starting Strength" by Mark Rippetoe. Mark has done plenty of vids here on RU-vid. Just search for "Starting Strength".

@JLascek Somebody made the point that she's a "professional" (she may have made the point). It's comical. Especially with the line of logic that if she completes a weekend certification -- or holds any certification for that matter -- that she some how is a "professional" that should be respected because she's "certified".

I know that this video is old, but I began to do squats with the bar a couple days ago and I have the feeling that it presses me the lower back and not so much the legs, the couch saw my form and said it was right, she can't understand why I feel it, to somebody happened the same?

i'm pretty sure i'm doing my squats fine, legs are shoulder width or slightly wider, but does anyone know why i get a major pain in my groin area? Or does anyone else experience this?

@Howie262 It's sarcasm, bud. She may have a certificate on her wall saying she's a personal trainer, but she certainly isn't qualified to be teaching anyone how to do barbell exercises based on her series of videos.

I'm just beginning squats (I'm a girl) and when I squat I feel like I'm going to fall over backwards. Does anyone know if it's okay to have your feet slightly wider than your shoulders as I feel more stable that way?

Also, I don't care if she has another video of "Deep Squats". This video should not be up, because this type of squat promotes injury, particularly to the knees. I have not seen the other video, but even if it is proper form, that doesn't excuse having this one with improper form, unless she was demonstrating what not to do. But to those who want to follow this advice, follow on, sheep.

This doesnt look deep enough. I did squats like this for months and made no progress. Started doing proper deep squats and have been getting some good results so far.

This is a half squat she could have gone deeper to be honest and the bar should actually be resting a little lower than your shoulders on your upper back.

Full squat is ATG this is not a full squat, parallel is also just parallel it isn't a full squat either. Full Squat is when your hips are lower than your knees.

seriously sinfuldavy0 i agree with u man. Ahkbar can u do better? lets se a video of u doin it and no u dont go below parallel or else u are goin to put alot of stress on ur knees which isnt good at all. The way it is taught in the video is how u properly do it and thats how i was taught.

That back stepping will destroy your knees... Max 2-3 steps! When maximum weights, and "dancing" like that, your knees are going to broke anytime.

Split stance is pure rookie unloaded bar stuff only. Anyway, her form is not bad here, not for teaching beginners. Her Dead Lift video is shit and should be shunned. So this is good advice to get a start. If you really want a good YT video on squatting I recommend the "so you think you can squat" videos. They're much better.

since this is for beginners, all I think that needs to be address is the neck positioning. CHIN TUCK ALWAYS! other than that, good video. Sure, this are half squats, but,,,,once again how will u teach ur grandma?

I pretty sure you shouldn't rest the bar on your shoulders. You should rest them lower on your upper back above your shOulder blades.

That was supposed to be a high bar squat the bar, the bar position is on your upper trapezius, low bar squat is on your rear delts, helps you lift heavier weight (common with powerlifters)

OK maybe she can be faulted for not going down as much as she could or should have, but maybe she has "erred" its on the "Side of Caution". Maybe the critics could post on you tube to show us where she went so wrong. I would call THAT constructive criticism . In the absence of that..... all I've seen here seems to be the fact that this woman has ruffled feathers...perhaps only because that she is a woman.?

kbzon666 It's not paralell. Paralell is having the hip crease be at least as low as the top of the knee, her hip never goes down that far. Seeing as a full squat is considered below paralell, to the point where your hamstrings are touching your calves. Did not manage to find any definition as for what actually constitutes a half- or a quarter squat, but it's definitely neither paralell or full.
