I don't mind the BDSP chibi, though it should have been much better. What I'm really disappointed in is the lack of additional story/lore. I really wanted a direct plotline between BDSP and LA, and the ability to transfer Hisuian mons, forms, and alphas, but alas. BDSP=missed opportunity.
I agree. Yea the game looks kinda shit in some areas (route 212 having no shadows is pretty bad) but for the most part I didn’t mind the art style at all and I thought it actually looked pretty good in some areas. The main issues were the character movement like he talked about and the lack of any of the improvements from platinum imo
I think that pokemon remake need to implement the new mechanics an pokemon on a older game. Like oras where you play a gen 3 games whit a game 6 mechanics. Where in the future gen 10 and unova remake will come out, i want a unina whit gen 10 mechanics and graphics not gen 5 chibi shit
2:59 2021: I'm not a PokeTuber, I like Star Wars more 2024: I'm a Pokemon guy As Two-Face said: You either die to become a hero or you go on to become a villain
It has to be noted that chibis were only initially used because of technical limitations. It's even more obvious with Zelda and Pokemon because all the cutscenes, major events, concept art, etc show what the original artists wanted things to look like
Honestly whenever anyone shits on the Switch saying games are ugly I immediately point them towards the Xenoblade Chronicles games. Not just because it’s my favorite franchise behind Zelda, but even its developers Monolithsoft helped the Zelda team with BOTW and TOTK
Monolith should help Gamefreak with the mainline games like SwSh, Legends Arceus, and S&V. More specifically from a technical point of view on graphics and world design
2:46 "Graphics and Gamplay aged like GBA Cheseland.." I played Links awakening DX on gbc when I was young, and the gameplay hasn't aged poorly at all. Its still perfectly playable to this day, due to its simplicity. in comparison, Pokemon Red and Blue aged WAY worse. Just wanna throw in there real quick.
The inventory system has made Link's Awakening age like 20-year-old cheese though and made the game almost unplayable, expecially after the Switch remake came out
@@HMMadsen A list of pictures (your items) which you can select with A and B, to put them into your two active slots. What is so bad about this? Sorry but have a very different opinion. "unplayable" ?? what the actual fuck? Have you guys seen a PC in pokemon blue/red, or their inventory? That shit is borderline unplayable.
I agree, the Chibi designs are a good attempt at replicating the Gen 4 pixel graphics. Proportion wise the bodies are very well proportions, however I feel the designs fell apart are the faces. The faces are too smush to where it gives off this uncanny vibe. I'll say some characters do work in the style like Dawn, Flint, and Gardena. However, others characters like Cheryl, Crasher Wake, and Volkner does not. Also the models in battle are way more visually appealing than over world models. And it would make you ask, why didn't they do the entire game in that style than the chibis. And the following Pokemon also doesn't help because they are smaller versions of the regular models that would had a bit of change to fit the style of overworld models.
@@ianmurphy3840 I would have liked it if they had beady eyes similar to the original sprites of gen 1 and 2, also like link's awakening. It could have been very unique and charming compared to most 3d pokemon games. Instead of awkwardly forcing in anime faces for... I don't even know why. Brand recognition? Uniformity?
@@PhantomOfficial07 I can see them doing the Gen 3 style of sprites, since they have the beady eyes too. I feel it can work too. I feel the anime faces can work in a chibi style. Look at Nendoroid figures, especially the ones with Marnie and Raihan. Those look pretty good examples of the chibi's with anime faces.
@@ianmurphy3840 Oh yea I forgot about gen 3. It's there too. I haven't seen the figurines though, but in BDSP specifically it feels forced. Like they "have" to stick to an anime status quo or else.
The art could have been a funny afterthought or even something enjoyable for BDSP since it’s like SwSh trees, less concerning than the content problems. Since GBA all the way to 3DS this series has done its darndest to make a remake up to the generation going on at present. So to suddenly have a faithful one that’s even allergic to Platinum fixes always set it up to disappoint.
@@--julian_ More like bad-faith lol, cause it repressed the appeal of a remake in order to reduce work. You already outsourced the game and surely rushed it too. Hideous stuff is what it does to tout itself as being faithful like this is agreeable. Makes me feel like playing DS games I already own.
To my knowledge Chibi is supposed to be very cute & emote/be exaggerated something many of the core Pokemon games do poorly. Also most game franchises can delay a game but Pokemon can't/doesn't due to merch & the anime
The problem with bdsp going chibi is that all the previous remakes were up to par with their main generation’s games, and were basically like new games. So it’s a massive disappointment when it was basically the same game as diamond and pearl.
Surprised no mention of Pokemon Lets Go Pikachu and Eevee, a remake of Pokemon Yellow. I guess it had a semi chibi style where they had big heads on regular sized bodies. Being based on a Game Boy game it visually it looked better than Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. While BD/SP was developed by another company other than Game Freak, they really should had them base it on the Lets Go games.
13:53 honestly I much prefer BDSP (as bad as it is) to the alternative that would’ve incorporated gigantamax and sword and shield graphics. Sword and shield graphics are awful and I despise gigantamax with a passion
Honestly, I don't think Sword and Shield graphics were that bad. They looked okay in the towns and routes. It was mostly just the wild area that looked horrible
Also the bdsm chibi looks quite different from the original. The legs, hands and feet are bigger, and they gave them fingers! As if that wasn't jarring enough they made made them waddle as well!
They are even hypocritical too. The Miniskirts wear tights, unlike the original, while Hikari still wears her original socks. Not very faithful at all.
We had a remake for Gen 1, Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu/Evoli but people didn't like it either ... So if I was Gamefreak I'd be pissed too and never make remakes again since people will hate them no matter what ...
Will be upset at BDSP for being chibi and top-down for the rest of my life I wanted DP in the Sword & Shield engine so badly. With to scale towns and buildings and routes being wild areas. Full scale characters, dynamax inclusion. You know just continuity with SWSH since BDSP were gen 8 games. And previous Remakes were intertwined with their generation's entry games I know people complained a lot and I mean a lot about SWSH route designs being bland. But holy fuck would that still have been better than what BDSP tried to do Sinnoh will probably have the worst remakes in the series since they'll have hopefully learned their lesson for Unova
It is certain that a lot of future top down remakes will use the chibi art style, whether it is Nintendo or any other company, for example level 5 has just announced an Inazuma Eleven 1 remake with a chibi art style. it's a perfect way to capture the original while making the graphics 1000 times better, it's also a really easy remake to develop. I hope every company takes the example of link's awakening and not the gen 4 remakes
I was actually okay with the BDSP chibi artstyle because I was under the impression they would sacrifice the visuals for extra content, possibly even the national dex….. they did neither.
Links awakening only needed a remake due to the inventory swapping due to only having 2 buttons on the gameboy but I never bought the remake because of the entirety of the remake.
honestly, the graphics are the last thing i care about BDSP. No platinum content No hisuian compatibility No gen 8 dens in the underground no new megas or forms for some of the most beloved starters.... like...why even exist?
@@e94youtube of course they are, they are super deformed. They're just not as exaggerated as Mario RPG'S or BDSP, which is exactly why they look better.
Given that Switch 2's release in next year despite me not planning to buy it, it makes me wonder will Game Freak ever learn their lessons from all Pokémon games they made on Switch & how to make it better for Switch 2. Winning lawsuit cases & yet, continue to make mediocre games just won't cut it.
ould have been cool to see BDSP go for the graphical style of the Let's Go games. No one really complained about those game's graphics or art style. Also for controls I basically used the d-pad only. Couldn't stand using the control stick as it just didn't work well with the world design. Also the models weren't chibi due to hardware limitations, it was just the art style they went for. The Pokemon Ranger games had the more realistic body proportions that the main games had. Part of the reason was just the DS game had a combo of 3D and 2D and they wanted to have a bigger sense of scale than the Ranger games offered in full 2D. Although I don't hate the way BDSP looks. I'm more disappointed that they are incredibly faithful remakes of Diamond and Peral. They should have included Platinum content like the other remakes incorporating the extra third game's content into the new versions. It makes the game overall smoother. Now there were things I liked. The Elite 4 was harder and Cynthia actually knows how to beat you down to a pulp even more than in the original gen 4 games. Her team covers her weaknesses and has proper IVs that make her a difficult final battle
Honestly I think comparative to other Chibi art styles done by Nintendo Pokémon BDSP just looked incredibly cheap. The lack of lighting/detailed textures make it look similar to something you’d see on the 3Ds and yet even X&Y and ORAS I think visually look more aesthetically pleasing. This combined with how incredibly faithful the remake was with nothing new to bring to the table (even lacking all content from platinum) That previous remakes had delivered on. I think as they continue to go down the generations with these remakes the games they are remaking will progressively need less improvements to “modernize them” which is exactly why I feel like they SHOULD lean more into reimagining the games a bit more adding in new content while still remaining faithful to the source material.
I agree there's a lot more effort and polish given to the other chibi style games. I do agree expectations cover with Pokemon remakes, because they basically are new games from the originals as they copy the game mechanics and Pokemon content from that generation. It helps the animations of these games are great and are expressive. I will say I do want more about Super Mario RPG on Switch as Paper Mario and M&L gave improvements for Mario RPGs that the remake could've used IMO.
Honestly i have less of a problem with the graphics and more of a problem with the fact that it's only a remake of diamond and pearl with no platinum areas or features, it's basically trying to be just like two games that while not terrible are fundamentally flawed and the worst of their generation (mainline at least, nothing is worse than pokemon dash)
I agree with you, but Luigi's mansion isn't a good comparison, seeing as it achieves this graphical quality using heavily restricted viewpoints. Also, isometric actually uses 30° angles.
They will probably do the whole combination of B&W and B&W 2, but given how the BDSP sold they either do that or do legends cause they are creatively bankrupt. I mean people are excited at pikachu running around in a trailer, but no gameplay no reveals just "Look guys we are making Lumious into a legends game". But after everything they are doing with Palworld I've just gotten through with it and will laugh at the horrible graphics, the fade to black, and the un-inspiring characters in this.
16:14 exactly pokemon remake need to implement the new mechanics an pokemon on a older game. Another game that has chibi looks and does it better is Dragon Quest Builders 1 & 2. While there spinoff titles, it had the character & world designs all chibi. But they kept the art style & the spirit of the franchise very contact and those games are very good.
I agree with you, Gireum Red, the chibi character designs are so adorable!😍🥰 If Nintendo decides to make a Splatoon rpg/jrpg in the future, then the character design of the Splatoon rpg/jrpg series would look very chibi and reminding of the Splatoon manga. Good thing I'm becoming a indie game developer, and I can't wait to start making awesome games in the future! Also, this is why I might marry to a Japanese women (or a hafu women, or any other Asian women like South Korean women, or Philippines women, or Taiwanese women, or even loli) in the future.
4:11 4:30 from both the zelda and mario example you can clearly see theres good lighting and shading for the game world while in 6:10 you can see that the lighting thats supposedly comming from the window is just... evenly distributed across the entire room, same goes for outside 6:13 and 8:12 where anything that isnt the floor just gets the same luminosity like the entire sky is the sun
Not-So-Fun Fact: BDSP runs on the Unity engine, which was used primarily in the 2000s and early 2010s by cheap flash games. We seriously live in a timeline where big budget console games are using the same game engines as those 15-year-old flash games from the Cartoon Network website. That is just as insane as it is kinda depressing
Well it is because Unity has evolved quite a bit over time and now it is a way better engine than it was back then, the Mario RPG Remake was also made in Unity.
@@oscarzxn4067 If that's the case, then you'd never know just by playing BDSP. That game doesn't exactly do the Unity engine justice, given how glitchy it is
Unity is a good engine. A lot of big games are developed in the Unity engine. You couldn't even tell that Pokemon is made in Unity unless you had looked that up. Unity is one of the most popular game engines out there. Cuphead was made in Unity too
Even Sonic the Hedgehog doing the Chibi art style too there’s two different Chibi art style one for the mobile Sonic Rumble and the other one is for the Sonic & Friends merchandise line exclusive to Japan
I know this is a video meant to critique BDSP, but I have to air my slight disappointment with Echoes of Wisdom art-style choice. I do not doubt that for gameplay reasons the chibi, top-down perspective art-style is what works best, but I just wish they went for any other art-style than Link's Awakening. To me it leaves an impression that the one Zelda game where we do play as Zelda we are getting (ignoring the existence of the CDI) is a game that does not take place in reality. If Link's Awakening in that toy style is but a dream, then what do we make of Echoes of Wisdom? I would have much preferred if they rolled with Triforce Heroes or a Link Between Worlds style as they are cartoon in style, but not toys. I would not doubt the style choice was less-so chosen for the implication that the one quest Zelda goes to is her playing with toys at her castle, and chosen because they have the Link's Awakening model and assets laying around - but it will be difficult seeing Echoes of Wisdom as anything but Zelda dreaming of her own adventure as tragic as it sounds.
You did a great job in comparing this game with 2 other excellent chibi-style remakes, because it allowed me to reflect and understand why the style adopted in BDSP sparked such a fierce controversy. You pointed out how the enemies in Super Mario RPG had a clear and evident personality while talking to each other, as well as the fact that the style adopted with both Mario and Zelda maintains a certain degree of fidelity to the original to "pay homage to its memory". Pokémon, on the other hand, has taken a completely wrong approach: the characters move and behave exactly as in the original, but since the camera zooms directly on their face (and no longer remains in a fixed view from above), you can clearly see that their expressions almost never change! And exactly as you pointed out with the little girl dressed as Pikachu, what in the Nintendo DS game would have been an ingenious gag, in a modern “3D” game loses all its meaning. Not to mention the chibi characters in the overworld and non-chibi in battle: here too, exactly the same as the original, but inserted in the wrong way. In short, they have mistakenly applied the same (bad) logic of a modern Pokémon game to a Nintendo DS game from over 10 years ago! Also, another thing I had never noticed before is that there is another crucial difference between the remakes of Super Mario RPG and Link’s Awakening compared to BDSP: the time elapsed. The first 2 games are remakes of masterpieces from another era and worked very differently than current games. Pokémon Diamond & Pearl are still “modern” titles: not enough has changed in the series to justify a “surprise effect” by playing the “faithful remakes”. In fact, seeing them again now in the same original style the effect is diametrically opposite: it’s jarring and terrible! Perhaps, in this case, it would have been more appropriate to adopt a full 3D style, precisely to avoid the unpleasant “uncanny valley effect”, but I admit that I would not like to see a decently made chibi format Pokémon game in the future. P.S. The image of BDSP with the atrocious style of SWSH, Gigamax and Wild Wasteland Area will forever haunt my nightmares. Thanks 😰
Play the game on the original hardware Mr. I scream into Gireum‘s face that he’s wrong because i never played a Pokemon NDS game and need to simp for a overpriced garbage franchise 🙄. I played any Pokemon game besides Scarlet and Violet and ANY game that Gamefreak released on the Switch sucks ass in one way or another get yourself a NDS or emulate the games, play them for yourself and then you will understand what Gireum is talking about
The Pokemon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl chibi is cute. How DARE you say the art style failed. The art style on Echoes of wisdom is A HUGE FAIL cause the game sucks and is garbage
