So my thought is it would probably be easier to take the clothes down to the creek and just wash them in the creek instead of hauling water etc. In a real grid down situation it just wouldn't make much sense to do all that extra work.
I watch your show most of the time for the last 4 years and don't generally comment but I think this one was hilarious and you really put a lot of effort into it. Thanks for having a great sense of humor and keeping it real.
My Grandma was one tough woman! She did EVERYTHING from scratch and she was stronger than most men these days. When she’d wash us (in her 60’s) we’d feel like our skin was coming off - Lol! But she kept saying we were still dirty & we didn’t talk back to her (because we didn’t know if we would make it out of the bathtub with our skin still on - Lol!) She just wanted her grand babies 👶 to be clean. ❤
I laughed so so so hard. Let’s just say I had to change clothes. 😂 This was the BEST video ever!!! Thanks so much. This also gave me a grand appreciation for my grandparents.
The only problem with that is if you 're on a well for water. The pump won't run if there's no power so you wouldn't be able to fill the bathtub unless you hauled the water inside from the outdoors!!
@@vintagehomemaker9338 keep a wash bucket near the well, etc if possible. Then use clean plunger-only for laundry. Yes, water is a source of life but I'm sure you already know all this prepping stuff. 👍😁
My plan is two 5 gallon buckets and plunger dedicated just for laundry. If we leave our 5 gallon buckets outside at all times we should get some rain water to use Thus no hauling water What do you think?
I've been waiting for this video and you guys didn't disappoint. The lessons learned are immeasurable. Forgive the tears of laughter falling down my face. Best video yet!
We have three 5-gallon buckets, one with holes drilled in that fits inside another bucket, a hole in the lid and a plunger with holes drilled in. The plunger agitates and the third bucket is for holding rinse water. Use the bucket with rinse water to swish water out of the bucket with the holes. There are videos on here. I don't have a wringer yet, but its on my list.
Back in the day my brother and I did the family laundry in a wringer washer, then hung it on the line to dry! Lots of work! You guys are too funny! Love ya!
Question ⁉️- wouldn't it be easier just to do all this in the bathtub you could even climb in and stomp on it with your feet? Then just pull the plug squeeze it and hang it up. I've seen other people do that on RU-vid am I underthinking this? Is that a thing?
Now people know why I drove 500 miles to help my sister....and why I was so happy to walk her down the aisle and give her away. I could have a blockbuster action horror movie of all the "projects" she talked me into helping her.
Simple way to do wash is not to get your clothes dirty lol. The easiest way to do laundry with no power is to go get 2 yellow mop buckets on wheels with wringers and a laundry only toilet plunger. They sell them at home depot/ Lowes and places like that. The cost is worth it or as a Christmas present, Birthday present, or mother's day present.
I have cleaned clothes in a bathtub. I would soak them and then use my hands to swoosh em around. Then I drained and filled tub again. But only fill till clothes are submerged. Then swoosh again. Then drain again and squeeze. My clothes were clean just as if I used a washer.
I knew this was gonna be a good one as soon as I clicked on it, and it did not disappoint!!! Y'all were cracking me up so much 🤣🤣🤣 This channel is the BEST!
You guys are so funny! I enjoyed watching this video so much. I remember growing up with my mom doing laundry on a wringer washer for our family of seven. The adjustment knob on the top of your wringer should loosen to allow zippers through it. Also, the handle should turn in both directions, so you should have been able to just turn in in the opposite direction of what you were turning it and then feed the clothes so the water would have gone back in the bucket. I have a wringer like that that I bought at a yard sale for $10. I've not had to use it yet, but I would if I had to. We live in the Missouri Ozarks and we had a cistern put in to catch water off our carport roof. It holds almost 2800 gallons of water. We had to send to Canada to get a "frost free" hand pump. We use it to water our garden, but it would be much better than going to the creek to get the water. Tawra, you need to get your rain barrels hooked up to your downspouts so you could get your wash water from there. Oh, about the stopper for the sink----we were poor growing up, even though we didn't feel "poor". One time, the stopper for our bathtub broke and, until they replaced the stopper, Mom just wadded a thin, wet washcloth up tightly and pushed it in the drain hole. It let the tub hold water with very little leakage. I think that's what I would have done. I wish you were my neighbor......no telling what we could get into, just saying! May God bless each of you.
Jewel Gaither - I was thinking the same thing, hook up the rain barrels. The water would be cleaner too! Very entertaining but it did show we must be prepared or it's just going to be that much harder. Love those ladies!
Yes. If she is so "prepared" why are her rain barrels not hooked up, and being used even to water the garden, or for the "Emergency"? And I was wondering why she put the dirty rock into the wash tub. Why she didn't rinse out the tub first? This was sort of funny, but I was thinking an actual video on how to do laundry with no electricity would have been m ore useful. that's what I thought when I clicked the video!! LOL
@@laurieasmus9998 Oh, I had fun watching this. I think they were having a lot of fun, as well, making the video! It's a reminder to all of us to do a little research in our preparedness!
Our house plans to use Castile soap. You don't have to worry about leftover soap in clothes. It's safe for brushing teeth or bathing and water plants with dirty water.
A plunger works great! I used one in Germany to wash our clothes. My husband was in the military and in order to save I would do the wash by hand. We took sheets etc to the base pay washers and dryers. I watch this on my big screen TV. Hope you are feeling better. I know you went to the Chiropractor. Funny the older we get we don't bounce like we used to when we fall!
OMG! That was a nasty fall, hope you are doing well. I think I’m prepped for laundry, have my five gallon bucket and plunger. I recently bought an indoor drying rack. Started using it for loads of wash with smaller items. Hang tops, shirts on plastic coat hangers in bathroom rod. Only use dryer for sheets, Jeans or thick towels. Trying to save money for electric bill. Only in the testing part for now, will adjust when the need arises. Great video, thank you for sharing.
My well ran dry about 2 years ago and immediately I bought 2 275 gallon totes and a Ryobi water transfer pump. One tote for storing water and the other mounting on a trailer to bring in the water and storage too. For laundry a 5 gallon bucket and a washboard. The washboard after soaking I would just push it in the middle of the bucket and twist it. Worked pretty well. Get a top loading washing machine and pump water into it for washing. 25g to wash and 25g to rinse. I use the buckets now for watering trees and garden. Get meatal buckets as the plastic ones don't last very long. Looking forward to part 2 of this experience. 👍
Thank you Tawra, Jill and family. I live in Australia and have been following this channel for awhile now. Such common sense tips and ideas that translate to all over the world. 🌏🌎🌍 But this vlog was the funniest and most real you have done, fantastic. I love doing handwashing and pegging it on the line, looks so satisfying. 👌 Keep up the good work. 💖💖
Y’all get an A+ for giving me a good laugh 😂. Another A+ for showing us just how hard it would be to collect water, and wash clothes. And a 3rd A+ for all the money you just saved me on buying all those washing items.😊
I’m so proud of you! This was totally the best video I’ve ever seen! I may watch it on loop when I’m having a bad day.. love love love this! Ps… my new catch phrase is when I can’t do anymore “are you still dead Dave?”!! Hahahaha
LOL....I wish we were neighbors to see this up close! Forget the washing like in the olden days. Now I understand why my aunt with her 9 kids just had 3 suits of clothes. Oh my gosh!
I have a breathing mobile washer from Lehman's (online). It looks like a plunger kind of but is made for doing laundry in a bucket. It is just under $30 and well worth it. It looks like they have a better handle than when I got mine.
First. . .hilarious! Secondly. . .what a huge job! I would have pulled my hair out and used that for a plug! Seriously, I learned a great deal. Going to put my off grid laundry kit together. I'm going to add some line to hang my clothes on, will pit them on a hanger and then hang from a tree or my line. Hope your arm is better! 🌼
VERY ENTERTAINING! But smart. Big part prepping is knowledge and skills It is smart to have a practice run. It makes you thankful for modern convenience.
Yep; I agree on wearing clothes for a long time before washing about 10 minutes into video. 🤣 I just love these videos with the sense of humor and realness.
lol So funny! Great to see someone checking their preps and finding the problems before you need them. I love how you're going to the very worst possible scenario - Dave's dead, have to get water from the creek using a rock! You went full-on pioneer! Consider using a pully and coming off the tree at the top of the trail to pull the wagon up. Maybe he'll help you with that if you resurrect him. 🤣🤣🤣
I really enjoyed this video. Tawra, your mom is such an amazing person. She's like a great friend, a wonderful mom, & a good teacher, all in one person. ☺🙋♀️🙏
My mother had a washboard when she first got married. She really appreciated the modern washer, dryer, dishwasher and air conditioner when she got them.
Tawra Jean, you will never cease to amaze me! I felt that fall myself. OUCH! Thank you for all your hard work. When I was a kid, there was a time when we did our laundry in the tub. It is hard work but we had water in the house. Which would be easier, I wonder, doing it outside or bringing the water in and using the tub or sink. Great job ladies!
This was absolutely great! You do all the hard work teaching us:) Bless you, Dave and your mother... this was a heck of a task. You all are such a joy to watch
A bucket and plunger works great to clean laundry. I have used it to wash cloth diapers and they come out clean. Also I would probably set up some kind of rain catchment system so I would have water on hand for washing and even bathing if needed.
I miss using the wringer washers. I would have plugged the sink underneath and used the stopper on the inside. A cheap toilet plunger inside a bucket with a lid works pretty good. You folk got a workout that day.
Our washer broke last year and we couldn't afford a new one for a month or so. We washed our clothes in the kitchen sink and rinsed them in the. Other sink basin.the hardest part was wringing them out. Finally came upon the idea to use the wash bucket that stings out the mops. That worked great.so glad when we finally got a washer. You guys are so much fun to watch !!
Omg, you were killing me. 😂I laughed till I cried! I can only pray that we have any sense of humor left if the SHTF. Thank you for showing us a representation of what life off the grid would be like. Water will definitely be precious and we certainly won’t turn the tap on and let it run without giving that some thought. Thank you for your practical advice given with love and HUMOR!
You did a good job praying for your body to recover quickly i am glad Dave is not dead. I agree I will wear clothes for a week. I am going to get a 5 gallon bucket with a plunger and beat the neck out of my clothes. Loved your wash and wear video. Thanks take a test love you all
This was so funny! “No Dave you are dead”. 🤣🤣 You falling, not so funny. I hope you didn’t injure anything. After watching this my clothes will be real dirty! I also will take my clothes to the stream. I could never haul that much water! Great video! Lots of laughs now but maybe not one day. 😬
Apart from you hurting your shoulder this has got to be the best video you've made! Your personality was shining and I just smiled and laughed thru the whole video.. As for stopping the sink up, I would've just resurrected Dave, he wasn't RIP anyway..lol really great video ladies!
My washer broke, and I used a small tumbler washer that I had for the camper. Worked so well (for just me) that I used it for 8 months or so while I comparison shopped for a big washer. It's my plan B. Everything depends on accessible water. Let's talk about retrieving well water 200' and more down without power...
This was hysterical. Recently my washer broke and I have been washing my clothes in my kitchen sink, then rinsing and hanging up outside. Made me appreciate my grandmother who had 13 kids and did everything by hand. I bought a portable washer/spinner for $200 with the thought I can use my solar generator to wash and spin the clothes. I actually love the portable washer but I have to carry 5 buckets to fill, then when I drain I have to fill 4 dish pans of dirty water and dump in the sink. If I have no water to use would have to hope for rain! Even if my washer hadn't died, I had planned on this portable washer knowing it could be run by my small generator.
Turn the wringer around, then the water goes back into the sink ready to wash something else. Same applies for rinsing. Get a washing line and use it now, save electricity, don't wait for what you're prepping for. I'd take the clothes down to the creek and wash them there. It was entertaining watching you trying to use the clothes rack, as someone who uses one and a washing line, every week. Since the increase in energy prices here in UK I only use the tumble dryer to 'air' my washing for 5mins after they come off the line, never have used much, always wait for a good drying day to do the laundry 🙂
Before starting you would make sure your tub is clean and ready to use. I would use either a plunder or wash board as today's clothes are not tough enough to scrub on a rock. I still need to find a wringer. Great video and illastration.
This was the best video I have watched in a long time!! Did you ever think of putting a simple dish pan inside to wash clothes? When we went through Ian, I used my dishwasher pan and did my laundry, I have two old fashioned clothes racks to dry clothes. We did not even have water, had to use my storage water. Most clothes are not dirty, dirty. Do you know you can hang your bras and hook underwear on the side edge of clothes rack!!
Thank you both for this video. I smiled all the way through it. Laughing felt so good. Great information which the company of a fab family. Love these type of hands on videos. Also I just want to say you have a beautiful home, garden and surroundings. Very beautiful
I moved into our old farmhouse on March 1, 2020. My husband was supposed to fly down on March 18 but his flight was cancelled. On March 19 my well went dry. I'm off grid and only had a generator for power and i didn't have a washer yet anyway. Fortunately I had stored about 400 gallons in a tank and my mom and I had that only for almost 3 months, for everything. I finally was able to get the well dug deeper, bought a little solar unit for the fridge. It took until October for my husband to finally make it down here. I didn't buy a washer until early 2022. If I could do this, you can do this!
When I was dating I had the bright idea of testing my date with how she handles stress. So I intentionally ran out of gas. I didn’t know the real test was when I told her I did it intentionally. I never did that again. She married someone else.
I have a manual little washer for camping that I would use if I have too. A rainbarrel helps also. I have a wooden rack for drying or else a rope to hang them on.
I have halled water in buckets to my bath tub. Added soap and let clothes soak then drained the tub just ring out the clothes by hand, then put new clean water to rince, drain and ring out. Put clothes on hangers hand on shower curtain rod to dry. That works the best!!
YOU GUYS ARE TOO MUCH. THIS WAS THE BEST COMEDY I HAVE EVER WATCHED. I JUST LOVE WATCHING A LL OF YOU. TYRA I HOPE YOUR OKAY. YOUR REALLY GOING TO FEEL SORE TOMORROW. I CANT WAIT TO SEE WHAT YOU DO NEXT. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. TYRA I HOPE YOU FEEL BETTER. TAKE CARE. CINDY FROM NORTHERN, MICHIGAN.
Tawra you are a real trooper for giving your all to demonstrate this! I used a wringer when I was first married in '73. There is a way to thread the clothes through the ringer and not eat the buttons & zippers. But I was replacing them all the time until I figured it out. I had a double sink so I would wring the soapy clothes into one side of fresh water & do a hand swish to rinse the clothes ( technical term, Hand Swish) . and wring out the rinse water back into the rinse side to re-use the water as long as possible. I never had to haul water thankfully! Hanging outside even in winter does work. I had a good laugh with this episode, LOL.
You have such a great sense of humor...poor dead Dave, I think he wanted to take over there💕😁. Its great you are showing a true situation we could find ourselves in. Notes were taken. ☺
When I was a kid in the 80’s I watched a 70 something woman use a wooden paddle to push laundry around an automatic washing machine, I can only imagine her standing over a open top barrel back before to automatic machines were around. I have used that method when washing over sized bedspreads and it went something like me sitting on the banister of the deck while placing my legs in the barrel and making the peddling a bike motion with my legs and feet. Worked quite well 😂 and saved me from lugging it to the laundry mat
Ethel an Lucy do laundry the hard way. I remember my mother doing laundry with a wringer washer. She still used up in her 80s. She had a sansevieria (snake) plant in the basement that had reached the ceiling where she did her laundry. The wringer would sometimes break the small buttons. I use to help sew buttons on. Dave is such a good guy. If you have rain barrels you could just set up by them an you would have fairly clean water. Be alot easier than finding a creek.
I bought a thing called a washing wand from online. Its great. I used it with a 5-gallon bucket. I need a wringer or spinner now that i no longer have a washer to spin excess water out.
Ok as a young kid we had wringer washer. I was taught to fold clothes over the buttons and zippers lay out as flat as possible to run through the wringer.
In the old days you had your Good clothes which you kept good. You changed out of as soon as you got home. Then you had your everyday clothes, which you still tried to keep nice. And then you had work clothes that you changed into to do hard work. They were either tougher clothes that could take a beating or older clothes that you didn't care if they got ruined. Then you kept a set of clothes that were especially for painting, etc.. (I do this today) You kept your clothes nice by wearing an apron while cooking and cleaning, etc... Then my Grandma had her Good Apron which she wore over her Good clothes on special occasions for cooking and cleaning. I remember she had a Special apron that she took with her to church for working in the kitchen when they had pot lucks.😊
While I definitely need a wringer, I have a funnel shaped laundry tool like a large plastic plunger that is used with a five gallon bucket. The bucket gets half-filled, the soap and a few shirts or a pair of pants and a shirt go in, and you agitate with the tool, basically a large plunger a half a dozen times. Then the steps are repeated in another bucket of water to rinse them. I have only used it a few tims, but it gets clothes clean well and is a way to use the mechanics of the body efficiently, as in not throwing your back out. A wringer or a manual spin dryer would be a necessary addtion still. On a side note, my new cookbooks arrived today, so thank you for the prompt shipping!
I have a large feed and seed bucket that I drilled a hole large enough for a toilet stick to go through. I then replaced that stick with a screw in broom stick. I have a new plunger that I can agitate with. I would LOVE to have a roller ringer. You are right, we all need to practice so it's not a complete surprise. Easy way to work the kinks out.
😂😂😍😍🤣🤣😄😄😂😂😍😍 I LOVE the videos like this you and your mom make - totally "unscripted" and totally real. I laughed so hard because I could see myself and my mom doing the same thing. LOL I thought I was going to die when you fell in the creek! I hope you are okay. I could tell your mom wasn't into doing the laundry especially with her nice, manicured nails. LOL My grandmother used to use a ringer type washing machine.
Clean your bathtub and use that as your wash basin. You already have a stopper for it, and you can fill it up with water add your soap, put your clothes in and then either use wash boards or actually walk on the clothes and work them up to get them clean. Then, you can ring most of the water out into the tub, and then haul them out in buckets to the ringer to ring the rest out.
I loved your entertaining show today...In my day I washed my 59 year old Son's diapers in the bathtub for a short time, wish I would have known about using a plunger to help...Glad those days are over! We did have a wringer washer when I was growing up!
After this, were you down in the bed.? Fibro is so painful. 😢 My mother had three galvanized wash tubs. She boiled water in her black iron tub, The tub she made hominy in. She drew well water and filled each bucket half with cold water. The boiled water went into the cold water. She took her scrub board and her Oxogen Soap and scrubbed those clothes until her hands were red and raw looking. The clothes went through two rinses. She then wrung those clothes out by hand. Then, she hung them out on the clothesline to dry. The next day, she put her three iron irons on the wood stove to get them hot enough to iron. (I still have those irons) she used a coke bottle with a sprinkler to dampen the clothes. My mother is in heaven resting today and her clothes are sparkling white! I have not watched a video, I have enjoyed more. You make it look so simple. 😂😂😂😂😂😆😆
Thanks for the entertainment!! When you rolled the wagon down the hill, I thought "that's not going to be too fun coming back Up that hill, with a barrel full of water"!! For anybody in this situation that has access to a creek, what about using a rope thru the "limbs" of the clothes, & let the flowing water rinse them? Not sure if it would work (?). Maybe hand ring clothes a few times while they're tied up, to get some extra dirt out. Also, take the clothes TO the water, so you don't have to haul that weight, and to make sure you have enough water. I bought a "mobile washer" plunger, a decent size oval bucket ($ Tree), some extra 2 gallon buckets, and ordered a mop bucket & wringer, online. It rung the bulkier items better than small items. Your wringer is better for that! I put only a little water in the bucket to plunge the clothes, dump the water, swish the dirt out of the bucket. I do this several times with Just water, before I use soap on the clothes. Don't use a lot of soap, or you'll need LOTS of water, to get it out. It's All trial & error, until we come up with a good plan. Hopefully we Won't need to resort to this. My first time didn't go much better than y'alls ... And I wasn't having as much fun!!
Lol lol lol - you are a great sport Tara ! Made me laugh so hard - thank you for another great video filled with common practical very helpful information 👍
I wash jeans oncd a week by hand with scrub board then one day on towels etc then one day clothes. My undergarments I wash by hand in my sink and hang dry everything. My stuff comes out way more cleaner and we use less water than out wash machine!! Bedding my husband helps which we do once a month due to comforters weigh A LOT! LOL. But I love how we save on water and lowered our electric bill.
