How To Do Perlite Propagation Properly And Its Benefits- Ruby's Plants

I watched this video not too long ago, and wanted to come back and tell you my experience with a propagation I am doing as you have shown in your video. I am fairly new with my plant obsession, (less than 6 months) so learning as I go. I had 2 good sized cuttings from a large monstera deliciosa that I tried propagating in soil. After several weeks, it wasn't looking so good, so I removed it from the pot to check out what was going on. I think there was a problem with drainage, because it was starting to get root rot. Btw it had not even started sprouting any new roots. The rot was on the bottom of the stem and on the small aerial roots. I wanted to save it so I cut off the rot part, and put one cutting in water and the other in perlite as you do in your video. It's been a couple weeks and I look at the one in water everyday to see if there is any root growth and no new rot. There is finally a root appearing that is approximately 8mm, and I was so excited. I didn't want to disturb the cutting in perlite, but was so curious to see how it was doing, and when I took it out, there were probably 10 white roots growing that were 2-3 cm long. I couldn't believe it, especially because the cutting in perlite was in worse shape than the one in water, so I was doubtful that it would make it! I put it back in the perlite and I'm going to let the roots grow a bit longer before potting up. I just had to tell you how helpful your video was, and I am going to be using this method for some other propagations. Thank you!🙂💟🌱🌿

three questions: 1. do you re-use the perlite medium after you've rooted ? what's the protocol? 2. Is there a recommended perlite size? i've seen three different textures offered and wanted to select the best type for rooting. 3. at what point is it safe to transfer outside into the ground from potting soil? Great Video!! I hope my questions aren't silly. .. I'm new to this and really excited to give it a go. I haven't found any videos that cover the "rooting to potting soil then into the ground. Any responses are much appreciated.

I’ve had great success with perlite with no standing water at all. I use pots with drainage holes covered with a mesh to keep the perlite from washing out. I visit my plant propagation table every day and pour a bit of water through until it runs out the bottom (into a large tray). In this way the roots get water and air.

The whole point of perlite is that it provides airflow and moisture, as well as nutrients if you water it with nutrients.🌿✨　I think if you’re going to fill it up with water all the way, it cancels out all the benefits of perlite, making it the same as just using water 💦 For me, I love water propagation for almost all my plants because the roots grow fast, and I can monitor the progress everyday ❣️But perlite propagation was super successful for hoyas 🥰🪴

Just two cents for the timesavers: in my experience you don't really need to soak the perlite overnight or for hours on end. Just rinsing it through a netted colander like rice, or even just mixing water in has worked with 100% of my cuttings at least :D

It works! I am leaving my plants in the perlite for as long as I can. It is cost effective, less hassle and no more fungus gnats💚

Thank you so much! I have an Albo cutting that has been an ABSOLUTE DIVA. I switched to the perlite method a week ago and it just keeps drying out every day and I was getting so stressed. I'm switching to your method today and HOPEFULLY I can get this root system thriving. Sorry guys forgot to mention about perlite:- Perlite is an inert and. This is perfect for those of us propagating plants as we aren’t going to bring in any unwanted pathogens and diseases. Perlite is pH neutral which is perfect for the propagation of most plants. The water retention capabilities of perlite are perfect for cuttings. It will drain away any excessive moisture but holds enough to promote root development. Perlite will not deteriorate overtime and this allows oxygen to flow through the gaps which is great for root development. Perlite is available in a variety of “grades” or sizes. Perlite is a natural product. Perlite is a volcanic rock and can be safely used on heating mats which provide bottom heat to the developing roots- very effective for improving cutting success rates and propagating plants during winter hope that experience everything about the actual perlite love you all.

GREAT VIDEO. Kudos to great info, great demo, and being so straightforward and honest. I think the results occurred with dry perlite and then filling up with water, which would have the same result as soaking and the water reservoir at the bottom (first shown). I have used perlite for more than 40 years. Yes 40. It is one of my main prop tools. There has been a lot on sphagnum moss as it is used by many commercial growers. The benefit for commercial growers is they usually have greenhouse, controlled humidity and misting systems. The light weight nature is also a benefit for shipping. Moss is not as "messy" and has no dust, so less cost in labour. So, that doesn't make it the best prop medium, it makes moss a very useful medium. For home prop perlite has numerous advantages: it really works as noted, it is easy to transition to the main growing substrate; compared to moss it is easy to keep at a better moisture leave, and not dried out for most folks; the chance of rot is much lower for most plants.

i normally put perlite in a normal pot and put a tray of water underneath so it acts as a reservoir, it always seems to work well

I've done the same with vermiculite and had really good luck. I may have to try perlite

I'm glad you have this video. I had purchased a giant hawiian pothos and it's looking terrible. I decided to do straight to soil and is just going down hill slowly. Roots look fine and I've done perlite growth before but with succulents and had success. But succulents needing less water than this cutting I wasn't sure how to go about it. Thank you

Thanks for this video! I haven’t seen anyone else actually SHOW the whole process like that, which is so helpful for me since I just started getting into plants! I’m trying to prop a larger schefflera stem & it’s quite woody…from other people’s experiences, it could take months to form roots. Would you change out the water? I’m worried about having months-old standing water go bad.

Hi! I've been propagating in water for many, many years now, I honestly don't know why I've never done it in perlite. My other method was just to stick it in the ground after it's callused for at least 24 hours, that's usually a 50/50 success rate, even with pothos/philo/scindapsus(es). I came across this video & like, oh duuuuh. 😁 Question to anyone reading: does anyone add fertilizer to their cuttings? And, if so, what kind? TIA, plant people! PS. Thanks for the video, too!

great video! I just started propigating some adansonii in perlite and this video was so helpful. just had one question tho. in your version, do you to change out the water at all (for example, every week so the same water isn't sitting there for too long) or just top it up when it gets too low?

Why do you need the perlite at all if you are using a full container of water? Isn't it just like straight water propagate them? Isn't it the same thing?

This was so helpful . I just got an albo and I’m afraid of stem rot . So I’m gonna try this first with an addosnii and mican cutting and see how that work. I’ll add some super thrive to it to see if that helps as well . Thanks :)

Great video, this was super insightful thank you 💚 Loved watching and learning. By the way I don't know if you know this already, but when you held up your hand it put the roots out of focus because the camera kept switching between focusing on the cutting and on your hand. Before you put your hand up it actually focused perfectly because your clothing was dark. So next time hold up something dark behind the cutting or just wear dark clothing again. You can turn the display screen towards you when you're filming so you can check if things are in focus, that's what I would do

I was excited to start using your technique. It's my first time using perlite with water. Im usually a water propagation person. So few days ago I had 8 Raven ZZ cuttings. I did exactly as you said even went to buy more perlite and plastic wrap. I checked on my stems today. And the bottom are all slimy. I'm so confused how this happening. I topped it with perlite as well as filled it up with water then I covered it with plastic wrap. I'm now taking all Raven stems out of the 5 glass jars. I need to cut all the stem that started rotting into mush. Please help

Great video, what do you use for your potting mix, please? I so needed this super clear vid today. Just discovered that my Monstera Thai has root rot and I had to cut 60% of its beautiful roots. I disinfected and popped the plant in perlite coz Im afraid to put it back into my potting mix. 😫

I recently used perlite I use no draining holes but I usually check every 3 days to make sure it's wet enough.

I once loved seeing roots in water/perlite ... but now I need to see fast leaves too! so I end up moving them to the soil asap :D what do you do of the used perlite after you move the baby to soil? do you pop another cutting in it? or do you treat/wash it in any way before reusing?

I added some worm casting in some of my propagations with just water for an experiment. So far it hasn’t been long enough to tell any difference

Nice video. I accidentally broke the main stem of my new monstera yesterday while repotting.. i will try this perlite propagation to grow back roots.. is it necessary to keep this bottle filled with perlite and plant near window for indirect sunlight???

What about mixing perlite and leca together? Filling the bottom half with perlite and topping the remaining 50% with leca, does that do anything like slowly down the evaporation?

do you change the water for the water/perlite propagation method?

Use a is spade and a funnel next time that will help with the clumsiness.

Weird question maybe, but do you keep these on a heating pad as well? I've heard that is a huge plus to make sure they take to rooting and happens faster than not

I'm wondering about the part where you said "Don't forget to use the clean film or else it will dry out and you can get root rot." How can you get root rot from the roots drying out? It was my understanding that root rot is from the roots staying too wet.
