So now, discussing Wing Chun footwork. Perhaps the most standard way of moving forward in Wing Chun, is known as the advancing step or Seung Ma, in Cantonese. And again, depending on, which Wing Chun lineage you come from or exactly how your particular branch of Wing Chun does it, there a lot of different variations. In the WT system generally, we keep the weight on the back leg, for a couple of reasons. We keep our weight on the back leg so that, at any moment if we need to, we can kick, also if our opponent tries to sweep our leg, there is no weight there.
So it's basically, an empty leg. It also allows us the chance to quickly change our position and enter in from another angle, if our opponent gives us too much force. So, there are a number of reasons why we do it this way. And other Wing Chun styles, sometimes we use a slightly different weight distribution like, 70 30, 60 40, and there's always reasoning behind, why different styles do it. In our system, we keep most of our weight on the back leg, if not all of it.
So, the idea when we advance is that, we're actually going to use the front leg, to pull the rear leg like this, which is a little bit different than the rear-driven advancing step methods of other styles and one of the reasons we do this is because, if we push forward, then maybe a chance, somebody might kick you or sweep you on the way in. So, if we keep our weight back, it's a little easier for us, to manage this.
So, we start from the frontal stance and you do a full 90 degree turn, which is similar to the turning stance which I had explained in a previous video. And now, you're basically going to use the front leg, like, almost like a hook or like a grappling hook, to pull yourself forward. It's going to step, pull and then bring the rear leg with it. Now, the reason this comes as one unit is because, we have what we call a, "Linkage Effect", between the knees. You trained it in the frontal stance and it stays, when you're doing the advancing stance.
If you imagine that there's a spring or a coil between the knees, as he steps forward, it's going to expand the coil and increase the tension and then the coil's going to want to snap shut again. So the idea is, he steps, it snaps shut like this, alright? He steps again, this way. Now, we turns the other way, you're going to do the same thing. You're going to advance and pull, advance and pull. So, the idea, is that we move in one action, as opposed to taking two steps, to take the step forward.
So, one more time, advance and step like this. This is the basic advancing stance or advancing step we have, in Wing Chun. Alright, there are modifications and also different variations of it but, this is the basic one for beginners.

I like to keep my weight 50/50 then I can move in any direction with the same speed and power. Some people call it being properly rooted or balanced :) Just my Pennybuddha thought Sifu :) Amituofo.

All weight distribution has its pros but none has the perfect solution its down to the individual to feel whats right for them at the time and will act instinctively to their level and training as lee said you have to adapt to any situation any technique/ position can be compromised under pressure

Learning WC now, I've got to admit that the close distance skills of WC are very useful; BUT, whenever the combat ground is a large open area & you're a traditional practitioners ( following the footwork like this video) you may have a hard lesson against other martial arts fighters. Or you have to make sure your shoes can be slippy enough (perhaps all modern sport trainers fail in this case); barefoot don't work either, the sweat and the skin stick on the ground perfectly. And most importantly, you've to figure out whether or not you can actually use this footwork to just "simply move faster than your normal walking/ jogging speed"; if you can't, just pick only a bathroom or narrow pathway for fighting for the rest of your life. WC should be a perfect element to be well-blended with other systems, especially those with flexible footwork like boxing.

If your car dies, would you rather push it or pull it? When you push it, do you pull with your front leg, or drive with your rear leg?

having all weight on one foot seems handy in an attackers perspective but if u defend and the enemy is not an idiot he sees that and gets you on the ground in seconds if ur not a god of blocks

Appo Almansoori No. Jordans will totally ruin your chi flow. If you practice wing chun, you must wear Adidas to keep the chi flowing. Hope this helps.

this is not how wingchun do moves. you should give no order to the front feet, only back feet is pushing. source: a man, named ip ching :)

If punching or pushing, you will generate more force by driving with rear leg than by pulling.

Ip ching knows nothing abt wingchun? then tell me why on earth he Is chosen by all wc practitioner in HK as the leader of vtaa when ipman died, vtaa- the official wc organization established by ip man- sweep the front feet? kick a wc shifu in the chest, and if he could do (or know) the proper grounding, his feet won't move by any inch.

+ashknight120 Tricky, you wrote a new comment, not a reply, so if I wasn't checking the video again, I would've never noticed an incoming response :) The VT's supposed leader, chosen by Yip Man himself was Leung Ting, -caus he was his last student of them all -he was an only closed door student of Yip Man, for a reason -at the very end, by the time Yip man was about to die, LT leaded the association by himself, with the supervision of Sijo, he organized demos and public events, he commercialized the style to newspapapers and TV programs with Yip Sijo (thats why you can find a lot of pictures where they are together, while on the pictures of the other masters, they are among a bunch of people with master Yip and I've never seen a picture of Yip Man with his sons practising...) When Sijo died, LT decided to create a new lienage, and left the existing one to the others, partially, because a lot of elder masters, who voted Yip Ching to be leader, put a slight pressure on Leung Ting, and questioned, why a younger master is the successor, while there are elder Si-Hings etc, There was, and still is an opposition between LT's lineage and all other WC lineages. So LT created his own Association, and the Hong Kong masters voted Yip Man's son as a leader, as a respect towards the legendary master, and to avoid fights. No one can argue if the son is the chosen leader, even if his knowledge is not more at all, but if they have chosed someone else, others could ask "why him, why not me, or that guy.." It was a good decision, but Yip Ching is not really skilled technically as you think, altough, he is porpably a very wise master. Sweeping a front leg, and kicking a person into the chest are two different things. You propably know, that *ing *un is like an ultimate close range fighting system, created to be effective in extremely short distances or spaces. If you put weight on your front leg, the opponent can sweep it. You don't practise it, because you have a 50-50% stance, but we do all the time also to avoid it and execute it. Since -except the LT lineage- everybody pust some weight on the front leg, boxers, karatekas, mma guys, muay thai, judo, wrestling etc. in a close range fight we can pull their legs out and take them down. Very effective, I remember having a sparring session with a polish wrestler who received silver medal on the European Championships, and it was quite a fun, he wasnt able to take me down, but I could take him down quite easily (even when he said I can not use punches, kicks, elbow or knee tech.s) Kicking someone in the chest: A powerfull kick will toss the opponent out to space. IF the other guy isn't moving backwards, for some reason, because he has a "good" stance and resists the kick, but the kick was a proper wing tsun kick, and the force went out of my leg into the opponent- doesn't really matter if he's not moving, the kick will still cause damage But more importantly, if he gets a fullpowered kick to the chest, and doesn't move, that only means he is the first of the losers, there's a chinese saying "you shall not resist a punch, but avoid it" and this is for fighting every *ing *un lineages' main goal is to intercept attacks, fend them off, to get out of the way, to avoid the attacker hiting or kicking you successfuly, if you get kicked in the chest, and resist it instead of turning or moving out of its way, to decrease damage, you have lost Big, strong, stiff trees that resist the wind tend to fall down and die, while the reeds that do not resist, but allow the power, prevail. Also very old saying

+Shifu Master 1. All illustrious wingchun shifu name is written down in vtaa lineage wall, not the selfmade wc 2. there's annual wc competition in hongkong, every year, the champion with the real wc moves and skill could be judged fairly by the judges, by the skill not by the theory. 3. the right hand of ip man is wong shun leung, not leung ting. last, if you already satisfied to what you believe, whatever your path, I do respect ur choice mate :)
