In this tutorial I am showing you how to do Tani Otoshi. Learning this technique provides an excellent foundation for future counter throws. It is essential that you fully commit yourself, and fully extend your leg behind uke, making strong use of kuzuhi to execute this powerful throw. Be sure to like, comment and share the video!

Brilliantly taught, very precise, important to understand the detail. When you have a such a good instructor it makes learning Judo much more effective.

Would you consider doing a lesson on sumi otoshi? I know it’s supposed to be one of the favorite throws of the famous kyuzo mifune and even though it’s not too common to see in modern judo I still seek to understand the throw better. There are a few short tutorials on it but nothing in depth Any help is appreciated thank you!

I have an important question. I have attended quite a few clubs and have been taught this many times and of course the coaching varies each time. When I am very successful with this throw I do what one of my earliest instructors said. Instead of just sliding to the floor, I prop the back of uke's furthest heel with the sole of my foot. This not only guarantees close contact but the force pulls them further off balance. Every other coach disagrees with this but none give an answer other than "you just don't need to........." or "it's unnecessary". Is my idea really bad judo because I've found it works very well........

pepsiguzzler86 pepsiguzzler86 if I am understanding you correctly, I believe your method is perfectly valid however I effectiveness will vary depending on where you start the throw. If you are starting from face to face, you may not have time to step right the way around and place your foot that deep into uke, hence me only trapping his closest leg in this tutorial. If they have turned into a throw and as a counter, you turn in for Tani otoshi and can get your leg that close to their far heel, then I see no reason why this would not be effective. Of course, I may not be understanding you correctly. Feel free to send me a video/photo via my Facebook page and I will be able to give you a better response.

I used to ad an extra step on the uki right side with my right foot. Is that a mistake?
@SampsonJudo
@SampsonJudo 5 лет назад
Not necessarily. Sometimes if uke is a little further away you will need to make adjustments to close the gap in order to make the technique stronger.
@jotarokujo7955
@jotarokujo7955 5 лет назад
@@SampsonJudo ok thank you very much. I´m glad I´m not doing it completely wrong. I´ll try the technique without the extra step. It look smoother when you execute it. The detail of the movement whe you do the Kuzushi was gold. I wasn´t doing it. Just push the Uke backwards. I´m training tani otoshi for my green belt exam. thank you again
