Want your dog to go raw but not sure how to do it right? Mark from Unleashed in Calgary gives us the essential ingredients your dog needs in a healthy and sustainable raw food diet.
My research for raw feeding an adult dog is to feed 2-3% of the dogs body weight. Very active 3%, not very active 2%. So a 50lb dog getting 3% would get 11/2 pounds a day of raw food. 80% should be lean meat, 10% should be edible bone, and 10% should be organ meats, like liver. This is a good starting point, but you can adjust and customize according to your dog.
I don't do weight bearing bones for fear of canine dental damage and/or ingesting too much bone content. I have a 7 year old German Shepherd who I switched to 100% raw diet. 80% meat, 10% edible bone (raw of course), 5% liver, 5% other organ. What a difference this has made. GSD's have very sensitive bodies and digestive tracts, and seem to be inherently reactive to processed foods. I only wished I had fed him raw as a puppy. He no longer needs joint pills, and his skin and ear issues are gone. Also, no stomach upset and diarrhea. The hair on his elbows grew back and his poop is tiny, and doesn't need picking up. It dries up and crumbles away. I was feeding Orijen but my GSD has never liked this or other kibble food. His overall health has really improved since raw. I joined a local raw dog food co-op and buy bulk meat at $1.90 a pound OR LESS depending on the protein. I sometimes pickup store bought meats if on sale. I feed 2.5 - 3.0 % of his ideal body weight. It cost a little more and requires a bit more effort than opening a bag and scooping out dry food, but now I know exactly what he is eating and he loves it. He never ate kibble well. Best decision I've made regarding his food. Research and make the switch. It has changed my opinion about dry dog food.
Roxane IluvmyGSD same for me. I buy pork stew boneless meat, pork neck bone and beef tripe and liver once every week or so. It cured my dogs ear and skin problems. I try to buy the meats when they are on sell. I've been searching for ways to save money. The most i pay for the first two meats is 2.00 a pound. I have to look into that raw food club.
Roxane IluvmyGSD wow! I've been searching for a better diet for MY 7 year old gsd. I've been feeding her a raw chicken thigh every 2 days. Hoping to do it more!
Roxane IluvmyGSD Roxane IluvmyGSD I have a three yea German shepherd I am seriously considering switching her to a raw diet. Any tips, videos, books, or groups that you recommend for beginners?
Great Video clip! Sorry for the intrusion, I am interested in your thoughts. Have you researched - Parlandealey Pets Yummy Process (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? It is a smashing exclusive guide for discovering healthy recipes for dog food without the headache. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my mate at very last got astronomical results with it.
You should but a link to your site in your video description. I love feeding my dog a raw food diet. I made the switch and haven't looked back. It took some research and effort to get everything right but I know that my dog is healthier now than he's ever been.
Thanks for the responce! and its okay no worries :) She is doing good sleeping under a blanket right now lol its getting hot here in nevada summer time eww. Just thinking of how i should feed her better.
I want to start my 87 lbs, 8 years old goldendoodle on a raw diet but iam scared:( Is it safe to give my dog raw meats and bones? The bone fragments in ther stomach won't be dangerous for their track system like people mentioned on internet ? They also say pork is dangerous because of parasites or something like that and rae chicken because of salmonella and other things etc, etc. A lot of articles say to make sure to prepare the food right meaning I have to cook it and remove all bones..iam so confuse and nervous to give my dog raw meats and bones...a lot of articles say to cook it and others say it's OK to give it to them raw with bones
Hi I have an 8 year old 90lbs goldendoodle that has been eating kibble all his life..I wanna start giving him raw food but don't even know where to start..will you be kind to give me some recipes to get as far as the ratios and stuff like that to get an idea? I know it's about 2% of their body weight for meats including organs right? The thing I don't get is how much to give him as far as percentages and ratios of fats, bone/minerals and protein with the organs and bones since they all have meat in them..I been reading that I ha e to give him 10 to 20% of fats, 10 to 15% of bones/minerals and 10% organs..I just have no idea how to know how much is 10% of this , 20% of that..too confusing
My main question is this. Is a raw chicken drumstick ok as a source of bone? How often should she get it? I was thinking of twice a week, perhaps as a dinner replacement for two days. She has had loose stools, not necessarily diarrhea, but will feeding her the bones make her stools more firm?
I just got a new border collie puppy and want to get her started on the raw meat diet. Where is it okay to purchase the meat from? Would a normal supermarket be okay? Or would one like Fresh and Easy or trader joes be good? Also how much should I feed her now and when she is fully grown? Thank you, sorry for so many questions.
are there benefits on feeding them veg? and for the bones do you give it to them as a meal (no grounded meat included) on these 3 times a week? and also what is the latest time of the night feeding the kitten/ cat is best? Thanks
I wanna make it easier for my self. Lol. so is it ok if I just give him chicken and ground beef all the time? May switch it up here in there but will it be OK for %90 of the time? Will this be OK for breakfast all the time? One chicken leg, one chicken tight..Will this be enough for his protein and bone requirements for the first meal ( 87lbs goldenddodle 8 years old)??, a small piece of beef liver or chicken liver, a couple hearts or gizzards maybe an egg 2 to 3x a week, some fish oil with flex seed powder or one of the other one? Some spinach or a a piece of carrot or a tbs of can pumpkin.. For dinner about 4oz of ground beef, chicken breast or any cheap good meat for him? For bone requirement a one chicken neck? Don't know how many ounces of beef or chicken liver, a couple of pieces? Maybe 2 small sardines? Like 1/4 cup of goat milk maybe? Been reading a lot and I do have an idea just don't know how many ounces of what to give him or what to give him? I know I have to give him about 1.7lbs of food for the whole day which I will split in two meals which is about 0.8lbs per meal. And this is where iam having problems of how many ounces of muscle meat per meal, bones ( do bones in chicken count as bone requirement)? How many ounces of liver, hearts, gjizzards? Sordy for all the questions but I think iam getting closer to feeding feeding my dog all the nutrients..I know I can give him cottage cheese too, coconut oil. Bljeberries, bananas, apples and other foods too but my problem right now is what I mentioned above. Thank you for your help.
i have a 8 week rottweiler, and i want to put him on the raw meat diet i did all my research but i still do not know if he is still to young and i dont know how much to feed him since all the videos i have come across is for adult dogs. please respond
2to 3 %of your dogs weight is generally the rough guide so if you have a 10kg dog for example and he's a tad skinny, try 10000x0.025 giving your dog 250 g food daily. 80%should be meat (includes muscle met such as heart) 10%bone and 1o%organs (of which 50%must be liver)
I have a 7 week old husky just got it and he's been fed kibble from his previous owner at least 90 grams a day divided in two meals , I want to introduce him to the raw diet how can I do it and what can I give to him I feel so lost with this issue
Question: every bit of info I’ve found on this topic says to feed raw 2-3 times a week. But NO ONE says what to do on the off days. What do we do on the off days?
Feed raw every single day. No reason not to. I've never seen anything reputable that says 2 to 3 times per week. Get "Give Your Dog A Bone" by Ian Billingshurst. Great book and will teach you everything you need to know.
I want to start feeding my puppy raw so i started giving him chicken breast for this whole week and veggies. I want to add bones since theyre pretty important. My puppy eats about 892 grams a day. I go with 70% meat 10% bones 10% heart 5%veggies 5%organ meat The 70% is all chicken breast.. So as you could tell, i go through a lot of chicken breast a day. I want to try buying chicken legs and thighs from you guys. Would i be able to make that 70% all chicken legs and thighs or it has too much bones? I dont wanna keep giving 10% bones cause thats extra to buy for me. If i buy a chicken leg, it has the meat and the bone so it will save me money so im just really curious if thats a good ratio or too much. I have an american bully who is 3 months old that weighs 22 pounds I want to start feeding chicken quarters but it says it has 35% bones. from what I know im not suppose to go over 25%? Do i take out some of the bones from the chicken quarters or what? please help!
Perhaps fruit and veg? Fruit and veg is a must! In the wild a dog would also eat the contents of the animals stomach which would be mainly vegetation. If you’re feeding meat alone, it’s not enough.
Ive been feeding our dogs raw for 6 years and they have bad tartar buildup on their front fang teeth, well the two large dogs do. The tiny dog has very nice teeth. They are fed meaty bones, muscle meat, and organ daily, I do buy these recreational type of knuckle bones for them to chew on as well but those fang teeth on the big dogs just are never clear of tartar. I really didn't think this would happen on a raw diet. I don't feed my dogs fruit or veggies in their meals, never thought they needed it, although I know they'd eat it if given to them, I think they'd eat mud if I offered it to them .
Hello my name is John and i have a 2yr old Doberman and currently feeding him costco brand dog food and ive been feeding it to him for the last year and would like to change his diet up a little bit and give him some raw meat now and then along with his dry food. what would you suggest for a diet or recipe? He weighs 194lbs. Answer back thanks-John
Hi John. Thanks for your question about your Doberman. We reached out to Mark of Unleashed (from the video) and here's what he had to say about your pup's diet. "It is great to hear that you are interested in pursuing some healthy variety for your big guy! Real whole fresh foods are what nature intended for all of us to consume. Tragically the kibble has become the mainstay for most pet animals. Here is a great link to a phenomenal veterinarian giving her advice on how to choose food for dogs.@sites/healthypets/videos.aspx The raw food we carry and recommend to our clients follows the whole carcass model. This means you are feeding muscle meat, organs, connective tissue, bone, and tripe. Some vegetable and fruit can be part of this. If you are just planning on adding some raw on occasion and relying on the dry food as the mainstay feel free to add any species appropriate items to the diet. Remember a lean dog is a healthy dog! A good rule is that your dogs ribs should feel like the back of your hand when you run your fingers over it. When adding real fresh foods back off the kibble. I hope this leads you on a journey of health for your dog. Our website also lists what we consider to be speciesappropriate foods and ethical manufacturers. @reference/Cheers, -Mark" Hope that helps!
+WARRIORVILLE I hope you meant your doberman was 94# and not 194#. I have never in my life seen a dobie that big and I have Euro dobes. If he is that big he is seriously overweight. And so hard on the heart... FB has a lot of good raw feeding groups. And amount they say is 2.9% of your dogs weight. It varies. Some say 2.5% to 3%.. But that gives you a good idea...
MAn, so many videos. I just want to know what exactly to do and not to do. I have a 40lb APBT. What I was going to do is buy bulk frozen chicken and feed only raw chicken for the first week. Maybe 1.5lbs per day? Then what? Give a leg, a kidney? I just want an example of a morning/afternoon meal RAW. Thansk!
My recipes is 80% meat and bone (chicken leg, breast, whatever) 10% organ meat (kidney, liver... but not heart- that is a muscle meat) 10% green beef tripe Depending on what your dog weighs is how much you give...usually about 2% body weight to maintain, 3% to gain weight and 1.5% to lose weight. So my 50lb dog gets 1lb (or 16oz) of food per day...which is 8oz in the morning and 8oz at dinner. He gets blood work every 4 months for his diabetes and it always comes back perfect. Hope that helps
This is the fun of raw you can play with it. It doesn't have to be exact meals. Feed any where from 2.5 to 3 percent of your dogs "ideal" adult body weight. Feed very very small a mouths of organs and it doesn't have to be everyday, don't listen to everyone. Also organs are very rich and can cause diarrhea so be cautious. For me, I don't feed greens at all, dogs cannot digest plant matter, better finding other ways to get those nutrients. Bones are great but not everyday, 2x a week is good gor cleaning teeth, bones can cause constipation. With "knuckle" bones and heavy weight bearing bones, be cautious and supervise when giving your dog, these bones are very hard and can break a dogs teeth or make me choke. Organs and entrails I like that are great are kidneys, liver, tripe, hearts (considered muscle meat) and like I said it don't have to be in every meal. PREPARATION IS KEY. FREEZING ALL RAW MEETS FOR 3 DAYS WILL KILL ANY POTIENTAL PARACITES IN THE MUSCLE MEAT AND PREVENT ITS TRANSFER TO YOUR DOGS GUT, PLEASE FREEZE YOUR MEATS EXP PORK. CHECK OUT MY VIDEOS, AND GOID LUCK. HAPPY TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE
is heart considered muscle meat? i know its inside the animal, but it is a muscle right? i've given my dog liver, gizzard, egg with shell, sprinkle of oats, some steamed spinach, and a heart. shes small only 16 pounds. is that good?
I have a 50lb. Australian Shepherd that we've decided to start on a raw diet just a few days ago because of constant food allergies and expensive vet visits. I've started her off on 1lb. of meat a day split between two meals. So far we're using chicken breast as the muscle meat and chicken liver as her organ source. We're aiming for 80% muscle meat, 10% organ meat and 10% bone. We supplement it with a tablespoon portion of blended veggies and no fat plain yogurt and eggs with the shells.
Ⓛⓐⓟⓘⓢ Ⓛⓐⓩⓤⓛⓘ i just started my two dachshunds ( one is 9 YEARS, other 7 months) on raw yesterday. I'm using a premade formula first cuz i dont want to mess up the nutrient content. Happee Dawg raw food delivers and has the best prices, if you look under "free shipping ". My boys need about 23 pounds of food a month together. My Felix is 11 pounds. You probably need about 11-12 pounds a month of food for your dachshund
I can't find chicken hearts. my dog is on an all chicken and pork diet with pork tripe. I can't find organs or hearts. I got her the bone of a cow today.
Raw meaty bones are perfectly fine. Its the cooked naked bones that can be a problem.I feel theres more risk from feeding highly processed kibble remember melamine incident from 2007 not to mention all the preservatives and fillers.I recently heard of a poodle that has been feed raw ever since she was a puppy. She is 22 years old and acts like a puppy.
what kind of concerns are there with feeding wild-sourced raw food? i know deer and wild pig have pathogens that can damage humans, should we worry about dogs eating that stuff? i mean, ovwr the years my dogs have eaten of many deer during deer season, and probably more gutpiles than i care to think of, but never any problems. of course, worm meds/prevention were always in place for parasites, but what about the cystic stuff?
Schrödinger the cat Hi Schrodinger. Good question! We reached out to our expert Mark from Unleashed in Calgary and here is what he says about them: "Yes turkey necks are safe for cats. They must be RAW. There are some very large cats out there that may benefit from the size of the turkey neck. Chicken necks are usually our suggestion for cats and little dogs....of course raw as well. Both are natures toothbrush mechanically scraping those teeth!"
No grain at all, vegetables are fine but make sure the majority of it is meat that is eats. Remember dogs are carnivores and although they can eat plant matter, they still need a lot of meat to thrive, so as a vegan it may be difficult, but it's what's healthiest for your dog. Be very careful when feeding the dog homemade foods aswell, you will need to research more specifically to what you are/will be feeding it.
This is the very simple technique to properly read and understand any dog food content label to make sure that your puppy be fed safely, learn more here: livebetter4.com/keep-your-dog-healthy
You gave no real information for someone that never done this before. Just a hint specific information maybe direct viewers where they might be able to get patties like those.
I'm Korean and wow I came here to feed my dog raw food diet and see your comment. You know assuming Koreans=dog meat is kind of racist. I'm a dog lover myself and your comment is really disturbing
soufwesthoustontx that's completely wrong.if you can grab a small chunk of skin from your dog's ribs then he's just right. Now if you grab a handful then he is most likely overweight. Yes a little rib showing is fine but you don't want it to be anorexic
My comment wasn't "completely wrong," and no one said people should aspire to have an anorexic dog. A dog can be over weight without you being able to grab a handful. Dogs have different builds. Like I commented before dogs are supposed to have a waist and it is normal to be able to SOMEWHAT see their ribs. Clearly if a dog is bones with skin draped over pet owners should have enough common sense to know that is unhealthy.
+GoldenRetriever Abbie Actually if you get good quality patties for dogs they contain meat, bones(ground up), and organ meat, as well as fruit and vegetables :)
Oh no. .. Why is he eating the same amount as my 11 pound dauchshund? Please do research before listening to this stuff, it is NOT balanced and you can really mess up your dog. YOU NEED TO ADD CALCIUM. WHERES THE ORGANS? Check out Peter Caine for raw diet info. His dogs are aged 14 -18 and he is an experienced raw feeder for a proper balanced canine diet
its not a hamburger, its comercial raw dog food that contains ground up meat ,bones and organs, its called Spring Meadows Natural Pet Food, look at the frame a 0:36 .But I do agree thats a small amount of food for a dog that size.
He may have choked but did he have surgery to remove a splinter? My dog would sometimes choke so I now cut it into smaller pieces. He doesn't chew his food, just swallows it whole...lol. If it was truly from a bone splinter, you would have rushed him to the vet and had immediate surgery.
That dog is at a perfectly healthy weight. No ribs are showing, he's not skinny. Just because the dog isn't fat doesn't mean that he's 'skinny and hungry'.
