I've had a lot of people ask why their camera isn't displaying the live feed when connected to the computer. Some features are only available on certain models so I do recommend checking the 'supported cameras' page that I have put in the description or click here -->> --bit.ly/2YtqFrx--
im currently trying to connect my a7iii and the link says its able to connect through USB but its still saying its not connected. I am using the same usb type c cord as well.
just figured it out 5 seconds after I commented. lol. Tip, if "dropbox" or "google drive" is running in the background, it will give the error cannot connect. So make sure to quit those programs when you are trying to connect to your computer.
thank you. This setup has been driving me crazy for two days. I could not figure how to turnoff the control w/smartphone option. After you clarified that it was easy.
this video was very helpful, thank you for taking time to make and post, all the software’s features do not work with the a6500, but from a quick run through, enough features are supported with the camera to make it worth tethering if shooting around the house or a studio, with zero investment, nice, thanks again
Yes! That's true. For many people, wired tethering is the most important feature that people want when using this software. I'm glad you found the video helpful.
I wanted to say thank you so much for your tutorial. You were extremely clear, straightforward and thorough. Thanks for taking the time to make this John! Wish you great success!
This was SO HELPFUL! I don't understand why the desktop remote app is this detailed yet the imaging edge mobile app is completely useless and lacks adequate selection and customization.... thank you for this!
Hi John, love your video, just subscribed. Must I have a wifi internet connection for this operation to work or will imaging edge function without wifi
It makes it super easy to drag n' drop files w/o disconnecting the cable or moving the camera like this. It also seems to file transfer instantly than before where you had to wait to get the file over.
omg I've been lost and I've been scrambling through videos to figure out how to connect to my Sony Camera & ur video helped me figure it out!! Thank YOU so much.
Very precise and detailed explanatory video. Is there a way to save the videos directly to the macbook's ssd, instead of sd card on cam ? While.using Remote in imaging edge? So hit record button on, shoot the footage and off, and the footage saves directly on macbook pro?
Thank you! Unfortunately there isn't a way to do at the moment because there would be too much data going through and I don't think the computer/cable/program would be able to handle it.
Hey that's neat. It's the first video I see about the new image edge tethering mode. Well done. Do you know if it's working with A99m2 or would it be limited in functions like it was before with the older program? I think you also motivated me to give a try 😎
Thank you so much! 🙏🙏 It looks like the a99m2 won't have all the features available BUT at least you have live view tethering which is think is the most handy part of this. Give it a go! Its actually pretty fun to use haha
Great video! Thank you! I am considering moving to a SonyA7iii and this would be a very welcome way to work being used to the Panasonic iPad App. If you don't mind me asking: what lens did you use for the talking head bits in this video? (I am a Jazz guitarist who knows very little about photography :D )
Thank you for the kind words! I don't think you'd be disappointed if you switch to the a7iii thats for sure. I used the Zeiss 35mm f1.4 which is quite expensive but I just felt like using it cause I haven't used it in a while lol.
Thanx! This is my first Sony A7R II mirrorless as I been a Canon DSLR shooter so this really helps me as Im getting my new Sony delivered very soon and shooting my first shoot on it next week!
Very informative! I've been looking for this info forever, I'm glad I googled again today and your video popped up. I never knew about this software and used older Sony programs, probably because they don't promote it enough online. Thank you.
Hey John, I don’t expect you to be tech support, but I followed all your directions, and my A7iii will not connect, but if I launch Capture One, it connects immediately, so I know the cable is good and connection works. So frustrating as I want to do focus stacking with Remote app. I have checked other tutorials and tried everything, but no dice. Any thoughts
It usually is just one setting that could be throwing the camera off but you've definitely turned off control with smartphone off in the menu? Otherwise I would suggest resetting the camera because that has helped with a couple of other people that have had issues. And possibly an update with firmware may help ? Let me know how you go with it.
Great video - Thank you! Do you know if there is a way to supply power to my A7r3 while tethered to my PC? While recording video it seems to be killing my camera battery even though my PC is plugged in.
get an AC adapter on amazon. it plugs in like your battery, but has a cord to the wall. alternately an extended grip with 2 batteries works pretty well. whatever you do, don't buy the non-sony replacement batteries. they are all crap.
Thank you! 🙏 At the moment, there is nothing that I can think of but there might be a program that will allow you to do that but it wouldn't be an official Sony program.
You can capture to any professional NLE, but you'll need to go out clean HDMI (no info) into a Blackmagic or other capture device in order for the record software to see it.
Does this allow the camera to automatically connect when turned on after being setup only once? Would love to get some information as I need a camera I can control without ever really changing the settings on the camera itself after the initial setup. Thanks!
Hey John, Thanks for this great video. I do all the steps and the remote program worked once and after that the message of usb connection appears and now it is not working at all. What shall i do, I use Mac and Sony A6400
There is a confirmed issue in which this message appears and the computer cannot connect to the camera when you launch Remote on a Mac computer while Dropbox or Google Backup and Sync or Adobe Lightroom Classic CC or Capture One Pro is running. If this issue occurs, please quit these programs and wait for about a minute. Then, launch Remote again.
Hi! Great video! I am testing my a7 iii with the app right now and I have a problem with the auto focus in Remote app. It says that some shooting configuration cannot be changed if the AF/AE is activated. I tried manual focus, af-s af-c and all the options and still doesnt work. Does this ever happened to you?
It could be a simple setting that you're in that is preventing this from happening.I would reset your camera to factory default to see if it works afterward but one setting is usually the culprit. I'll have to double check this when I get back home but it hasn't happened to me before.
Great tutorial, thank you. I am trying to connect an a6300 to a mid 2014 MacBook Pro. I am struggling with the proper USB connection/ports, you did it very quickly. I do not have the original cables, but will be glad to purchase if I know which connections on the Sony and Mac respectively your are using (e.g. micro USB to USB?). All I want to do is view the image directly after shooting, no other options.
Have you solve your problem connecting you a6300 to your MacBook Pro? I’m trying to connect my a6300 to my MacBook Pro and states it’s connected but there’s no picture displaying on live view!
You're welcome! You can either use the cable that was supplied with the camera but if you need a longer cable, get a decent one from a computer store. You'd be after a micro usb cable.
Very helpful. The control panel in the PC Remote window on my PC is very small and hard to read - unlike yours. I cannot find a way to adjust the size of the panels. Ideas? Tips?
Hey! Great video! Do you have experiences using a alpha 6400? I am not really satisfied with the live view quality. Which is really poor in comparison to the results you show in this video.
Great video. Thank you! Is there a way in any of the three applications to sync the camera’s clock to the computer’s clock? I’m Nikon & Panasonic shooter getting myself acclimated to an a6500. Thanks again, very much appreciated.
Hi. Just saw you had responded to this question before. I am not clear on how I tether the camera to my iPad Pro for realtime viewing in imaging edge. I do have the IE app on my iPad. It’s the connection that I am having difficulty with.
Hi John! I connect everything good and beside this problem all the rest look good. It shows what appears that one of the cards looks missing but I have both in. Only when is connected with tether shows that. Do you know why that could happened?
Thanks for the video! I setup the software to remote my a6400 camera shot some videos, I found a few problems. under video manual mode, I click that half shutter icon, a6400 did focus, but I can not see how much ISO it had selected, only display ISO as "Auto", I like to see the ISO number which I can set manually near it, to keep the ISO unchanged during I shoot the videos. After I finish shooting videos, I need to transfer all the video files to my win10 computer, I found a6400stay on "USB set as PC remote" , can not be changed to "Mass Stotge" . I have to unplug the usb cable than select its USB as "Mass Storage", than plug in USB cable to my computer to start transfer the video files on the SD card. is that the way A6400 works with the software? it is too hard! I have to walk to the back of camera plus the bottoms to change the setting on a6400 many time during the shooting.
Is there a way to access the camera footage while the USB mode is in PC Remote mode on the camera? I tried the Auto Mode, in which case I was able to access the footage (both images & videos) but the remote app on my PC wouldn't connect with the camera in this Auto Mode. Do we need to keep switching between PC remote Mode and Auto Mode / Mass Storage Mode for using the PC Remote app and accessing media separately? Thanks!
Thanks for the video John. I hope you may be able to help me. I have a Sony A 7 II, which I can connect to my desktop computer without any problems. No way can I get it to connect to my Surface Pro laptop! I have turned camera & laptop on & off. Uninstalled app an re-installed. Used different cables, but mainly original Sony cable. Have turned off Dropbox, don't have Google Drive running. Tried airplane mode on & off. The computer can see the camera when set to USB Mass Transfer, but no response for PC Remote. Do you have any further ideas?
Is the surface running the most current up to date operating system? That might be the case or even possibly for the camera, that might be the case. Unfortunately, I can't think of any other reason why this wouldn't be working.
Excellent tutorial thank you, John. I am using an a7Siii with PC laptop to record video tethered and find it very strange that, when I press the red laptop record button, there is no indication on the laptop screen that the camera is now recording. Very unnerving on live sessions!
Hello, I have a Sony a58 camera I was wondering if you can tell me how I can use my camera as a webcam and live stream. I also have a HDMI micro cable and a HDMI Capture Card. Hope you can help. Thanks so much for your time.
Hey man, this answered my one burning question. Can I record on the camera and save it to the computer while tethered. I can not believe this is a no! what a fail. Great camera but this is such a must IMP, it can transfer photos right away, why not video!!! If anyone has found a workaround to this, I'm all ears.
is there a way to save the settings, so i can quickly switch from the desktop app and the mobile app? without going back into menu and changing things. thank you great video
Your camera can do wired tethering so that shouldn't be a problem. If that's what you're going for, the only thing I would suggest is getting a longer cable to tether to your computer because it is rather short.
thanks for your video sharing , I have a question about manual focusing , is it possible that during video recording , I just click different areas in the view to focus on it?
@@JohnSisonPhotography thanks you so much We are going to shoot some moving video and I was thinking about using this feature to manually control the focus remotely by camera assistant
great video but I encounter a problem. My AEL FEL option is disabled and I think cos of that I can't remote auto focus. My a7ii and a6500 both gave the same result
My computer can't see Sony a6400 when it connected with usb cable, can you give me some advices? Settings is ok, PC Remote is ON. I got MacBook Pro 2017 with 2 type-c ports, and Big Sur as OS.
Hi this very helpful video, Does this all function works with Sony a7ii ,, like manual focus with PC remote,, I am jewelry photographer , so this will be helpful,,, thanks
You're welcome and sorry for the late reply! You'll have live view tethering but you can't manually focus using the program. You'll physically have to do it.
@@JohnSisonPhotography Hey! I followed each step like you mentioned but unable to connect. When I launch the remote plugin after connecting my camera, it says "the camera is not connected. Check the USB/network connection. The camera may not be detected if any other application is using the camera." I have set the camera to PC remote. And connected to wifi too.
Hey John, thanks for your video. Just have one question. I change Macbook from mi 2010 to a 2019 model since than remote doesn't work anymore. I've tried to connect the camera (Sony a 7r2) with a USB cable to an adapter y use for al USB connections with my new Mac and it won't work. Mi camera doesn't have a USB C access point just mirco USB. Any advice how I could handle this? Maybe a usb c - micro USB cable? Thanks a lot.
The best way to get that to work is through just using a dongle on your macbook. Its a pain I know. So just get a micro USB cable (many 'cheap' ones won't work. Get a decent quality one) and use a dongle to change from USB-C to a standard USB and it should be read correctly.
Thank you for this video, it's awesome! I did everything you mentioned and for some reason the viewer and the edit open but when I try to open the "Remote" an error shows saying "Cannot set up a PC Remote connection to the camera, change the USB connection setting to PC Remote", which i did, restarted the computer and the camera, but no luck. Any idea why it would be? Thanks a lot!
Even though Sony's website says imaging edge is a product compatible, I can't get it to work with my Sony A6000 (updated firmware). Is it correct that the desktop version of imaging Edge won't communicate with the A6000?
Nice video. I see that the live view (camera image) does not appear on the computer with sony camera A58. The remote only appears after installing Image Edge. Is there another program or solution to see the camera live image on my computer?
The only other way I can think of is to connect the camera to an HDMI output to your computer. It can get a bit confusing with what parts you need but hopefully I can get a video on a cheap solution out soon.
can I connect sony alpha 6100 to macbook air? I have Remote installed but while trying to connect to the computer app shows that camera is used by other applications - I have no idea which as I am not using any in the background - can someone tell me what apps exacly could it be?
Hi, I have a Sony a6300 with Sony SEL1670Z Carl Zeiss lens with 16-70mm F4, APS-C zoom. Can you tell me how I do remote focus control with the PC? Thanks, Davide.
You can connect the camera to the computer via usb but you won't be able to view what you're filming on the computer unless you're looking at the LCD screen on your camera unfortunately.
The a6000 does not have the live view function with this program unfortunately. The alternative is to get a small monitor and attach it via HDMI so you can view what you're filming.
No you can't unfortunately. There are some other alternatives that you can use in terms of programs but I haven't done too much research into that unfortunately.
Hi John - great video appreciation + 🙏 Do you feel like being a white Knight? :) I cant seem to get the focal square to appear in the Edge remote window (I notice it seems to be an issue with a few other peeps who have commented) I have the latest firmware for my camera (3.01) / have selected Expand flexi Spot in camera/have AF select to 'on' on my lense. EQUIP: A7s2/Sony FE 2.8/24-70 GM / Macbook pro 10.13 I do note that under camera setting in the Remote View software under the top menu option camera settings 'Focus' is greyed out along with quite a few other options. I have searched on line high and low for a solution with out luck. Any thoughts/suggestions would be deeply welcomed - with Thanks Adrian P.S if anyone else has an idea please feel free to speak up :)
does this work with any sony camera... I'm looking to to invest into a camera for video recording (particularly sony) but I'm not sure how I can connect it to the mac, would the cheaper mirrorless sony's be compatible for tethering?
If you look at the supported cameras in the description, you will see which cameras have certain features that can be used with the program. Just remember if you are filming with your camera for video using this program, the file will be stored on your camera, not the computer.
I imagine you could set up Lightroom to look for new images put into that folder, so you can edit them there as you shoot, since Sonys won't tether to Lightroom directly.
John Sison - I think it would be helpful to people. I know how to do it, but I remember initially being upset that Sony couldn’t tether directly with LR. The workaround is so easy though, I’m sure others would appreciate it.
@@JohnSisonPhotography Hey dude, thanks for this video. Did you ever get on making that Lightroom tutorial, I'm much interested :) Also, the only thing missing for me is the orange focus box that you have. Not sure why, but I just can't find an option to turn it on.
Thanks so much for this video! I hope it works with my a6300. I’ve been so mad for switching to Sony I’m hoping this saves me! I want to see myself on the computer essentially making the computer a large viewfinder. I don’t think it’s compatible with my model but I’ll still try.
You're welcome! I hope this helped. Although, unfortunately, I saw that the camera isn't capable of doing live view :( There are other ways like using an external monitor that will make the viewfinder a lot larger.
@@JohnSisonPhotography If only I knew how to connect an external monitor! I have a Mac which is why I found your tutorial. I'm actually sitting at the Genius Bar at Apple right now, still searching!
Eric Campbell mr Eric what is the process to connect my Sony a6300! It states it’s connected but won’t display the image in live view! I have a MacBook Pro.
