Mark, I hope that was 50% of a relatively small amount. It's been a tough year for many (sideways the hard way the last 17 months). If you are in it for the long haul, you'll be fine. If you lost it to trading, you might want to switch to being in for the long haul. Either way, dollar cost averaging is nearly as magic as compounding, so chin up.

Diversify your investments between markets. Choose index funds for the US and the international market. It's not tomorrow you'll have to worry about, it's the day after. Of course, there are risks but that doesn't mean you should jump ship with one bad experience, the stock market has a positive expected value unlike, say, gambling. Keep going or you'll end on the short side of the stick.

I think you are confusing "beating the market " and making money. Most of the investors are not able to beat the market. But that only means that they are not able to achieve higher returns than indexes after paying transaction costs. An absolute majority of them, however, earn money. It kind of depends on the asset, but it's definitely true for stocks.
@vijaykrishnan5703
@vijaykrishnan5703 5 лет назад
The 11% a year statistic is actually commonly used SPECIFICALLY because it accounts for inflation, same with the other statistics about the growth of money and the market. And most investors don't actually lose. It is true that 99% of individual investors do worse than the market over a period of 15 years but there are things called index funds and ETFs. The majority of investors don't lose, they just do worse but there are remedies to that problem. Having your money sit alone in a 2% a year keeps-up-with-inflation bank account is worse than having it work for you.

Extremely well-explained video! When I am trying to convince my 20years old friend to invest, i tell them similar things. I say that every dollar invested now will be worth 32$ when they will be 55 ; 72/10%= 7.2~7 years to double 55 years old - 20 years old = 35 years 35 years/ 7 = doubles 5 times 1 becomes 2 , 4 ,8, 16, 32$ The minimum wage is 12.50 $ in Canada. This means that they either work for 12.50$/hour now our 400$/hour for yourself at 55. That's another way to explain compound interest for young people!

The formula you are looking for is: Q = Qo*(1+(x/100))^y X = yearly interest (constant) Qo = initial invested quantity Y = years compounding at the aforementioned yearly interest Q = quantity you will have after the Y years (the sum of what you invested + interests) For example. Imagine you have 40k dollars, at 10% yearly each year for 30 years. Q = 40000*(1.10)^30 = 698.000 dollars. Yep, you multiply by a factor of more than x10.

Of course it works IF THERE ARE NO TAXES OR INFLATION... For example, if you invest $10k today at 10% APY, by 2029 it will have compounded to $25k... Seems a lot. HOWEVER, if you included federal tax on interest and inflation rate, you will have made 22k after tax but with a spending power of $17k in today's money... So technically, you will have made 7 grand... (and don't forget we are generously calculating at 10% compound interest..) BUT, over a long time, (say 30 years), compound interest works well. Using 30 years in our calculation at 10%, you will have made 151 grand, with a spending power of $74k in current value. That's why it is recommended you START saving early for your retirement.

Great question, and I’ll make it as simple as possible: Investing in an index fund, (which is basically investing in the general market) is by far the best way of investing. You will average 8-10% a year and wont have to worry about picking individual stocks. But the kicker is that you should be leaving your money there for several years/a few decades for huge returns. You also won’t have to worry about recessions or bad downturns since you will be leaving it there for the longrun/ it will inevitably recuperate.

You can easily compound your money by going to Vegas, and placing your money on Black. Spin the roulette wheel and double your money over and over again. Obviously the trick is not compounding your money in the stock market, but investing wisely so that you make positive returns instead of losses. Otherwise, investing ignorantly just means you are playing a really slow game of roulette. Compounding is important, but more importantly is investing with positive return.

Thoug I found the video quite fascinating, the title is a total clickbait misnomer. The video doesn’t teach you how to double your money in the stock market. The video just provides insight on the power of compound return on your investment. And the examples from the Indian chess creator wanting 2^64 amount of rice to the the number of dominoes that would surpass the Empire State Building. The video should be titled “the Power of Compound Interest.” But of course that wouldn’t get as many views as a misleading title like “How to Double Your Money in the Stock Market.”

I started investing religiously at 25 years old, I'm 28 and have over $100,000 in my stocks account. I could always pay off my house early, but I have discipline and want to be a millionaire and retire in my 40's. I will probably have that option since I started young... Or maybe my kids won't have to work their whole life? Lots of people make excuses not to invest, usually to blow their money on material things that don't matter long term.

I put into a compound calculator that if you put £100 a week into the s and p 500 with an annual return of 9.8% and wait 35 years it reaches £1 400 000. This sounds like a lot to retire on but you have taxes to pay on it and 35 years worth of inflation. In 35 years you may need £100 000 a year to live on before taxes. So that’s only 14 years of retirement

It's not only important to start only, but when to start. Buffet made money when he learned this, that "Price does matter", not only to buy. If you don't follow this and start at bad time, you can throw money and loose for 15-20 years until you even out before continuing with a win. Wait for the drop of markets, start investing and from that one never stop again.

Knowing the math is largely irrelevant. Much more important is to know what to invest in (the stock markets isn't always the best). The stock market is one big con game that allows those 'in the know' to benefit off the majority of people who are not 'in the know'. The reality is that when your money doubles, some of that comes from someone else who lost, and some came from profits by successful companies, while other people lost on unsuccessful companies. As much as it sounds easy and sounds like a math problem, it isn't, and a lot of people loose an awful lot of money.

4:53. Only need 24 Dominoes! Not 32! The height of the Empire State Building is 1454 feet (to the tip of its antenna). A typical domino is 1 7/8 (or 1.875) inches tall. Simple formula: Number of dominoes = log(1454 * 12 / 1.875) / log(1.5) + 1 = 23.54. Round it up and you get 24!

You could also start your own business. You have a chance of going broke, but your opportunity to 100x your business growth is on you and not some corporate executives who also have a good chance of making you broke. Think of it this way, the guy who wrote the book mentioned in this video made more as a book writer than an index fund.

Jamaal Taher hmm. So then taking the number and figuring out the percent increase to what is is now isn’t the actual % increase?
@JaTah3
@JaTah3 4 года назад
@@thecapone45 Why not ? There is only a difference whether you express it in % or as a multiplying factor. Say if you had a 1000$ and you made a 10.000$ , the factor would be 10, but as percentage you would say your increase was a 1000% of your initial input. So whatever the stockmarket value was 1945 , its value multiplied 2580 times over the 74 years, thus having increased to 258.000% of its initial value (of 100%).
@thecapone45
@thecapone45 4 года назад
Jamaal Taher hmm. So it’s a wording difference? why is the percent increase represented as only in the 20,000s? It’s just all really new to me. Or is it a case of saying the same thing but in different ways?
@JaTah3
@JaTah3 4 года назад
@@thecapone45 What do you mean with , as only in the 20,000s ? Whatever your starting capital is, it's always 100% (compared to your end result), so if you had a tenfold ( x 10) increase, your 100% became a 1,000%. If you had a hundredfold increase ( x 100) your 100% became a 10,000%.
