Me when I'm still a beginner: -Hates to draw side views -Only draws people with straight and smiling face -Not using references -Covers the mouth and nose with something -Uses airbrush in the whole rendering process -Takes about an hour in anatomy -Inconsistent style (Well, until now but only super slight difference LMAO) -Hates to draw clothes -Never draw hands and feet -If I draw a full body, it will be a silhouette My progress is slow but the outcome is totally worth it! I'm still practicing to master my desired style but I'm not a beginner already. Thanks sir Sam for inspiration!!!
We’ve all been there but the more you work at it the better it gets. It’s not going to start off how you want at first but eventually you work your way up to it
@@jaguar4118 My artworks were now better than my artworks when I was still a beginner (I mean it's obvious but using reference really helped me a lot! I t helped me to understand the anatomy of human body and how the light and shadows work).
Sam: "When in doubt, just give them long hair to cover up the ears" Me: When in doubt, just give them: - long hair to cover up the ears, - pockets to hide the hands, - pants to hide the legs Oh well, I will just be happy with other's drawings :D (Love your drawings ♥)
I love when Sam swung the ruler around in the beginning like “yes💅🏼I✨am🌝amazing🌚” because he really is amazing for making all these videos to help us 🥺😩💜
Still pretty new to drawing. Everyone has their own take on how they do the guidelines for the facial features. This one is in depth but in a simple way that makes a lot of sense even to me who is a beginner. I'll be coming back to this again the next time I'm practicing with portraits. Ty
Super helpfull! i draw faces better now! tip: when marking the ends of the eyes, mouth, nose, and brows, don't make them the same color as ur sketch you'll get confused and won't be able to see edges that you made that easily, I used blue which helped a lot, reminder:what works for me might not work for you so try at your own risk!
Thank you. Best video for simple minds like me a 70 yr old who started late. I really don't want all that cranium stuff of watched. Can't comprehend it anymore. I knew some of those measures but you detailed it well. Like I had ? on eye line. Is it bottom top or middle. You answered my question I've had for a while. Thank you Thank you.
This video was a massive eye opener. I've been sketching for about a month and have watched about 10 different face sketching tutorials, and every time, I draw something that looks like a clown from a nightmare. I'm not sure what it was about your tutorial, maybe the simplicity or the vertical guidelines, but my (still admittedly awful) face sketches actually resemble normal human beings now. Thanks so much!
Thank you so much for your help and for supporting all the young artists out there. I truly believe that my own art improved and evolved to a new stage because of your tutorials. I can't thank you enough for helping me find my inner artist
This is one of the best guides I've seen, truly. Sure many does this, but I think all the extra guidelines and explaination to them, makes so much more sense than many others who does these guides.
I can’t thank you for this tutorial enough, even though I don’t really use a lot of the stuff in this video anymore and I have a different style now this was the first good tutorial I found. Before this I genuinely had no idea what I was doing, and didn’t have a single drawing I was even slightly proud of.
As a french beginner in drawing, I can say that this video is one of the best I’ve watched on RU-vid so far. I’m left handed so it can be tricky to follow tutorials but because you’re doing it digitally I can follow the steps so easily and your explanations are very clear, so thanks !!
This STEP BY STEP video was extremely helpful as I started teaching (casual) art classes 2 days ago and one of the students wanted to draw a face. Now I can prepare properly for next week. Thank you so much.
Thank you ! I m studying animation and i initially wanted to do 2D animation but my drawing skills arent good so i focused on 3D instead. Your videos are helping me get better and Thank you again !
Looking back to these videos and getting into a whole other vibe from your current teaching methods. Thank you sensei for this very educative approach to face creations
I had just started art digitally and this video helps a lot with understanding shapes because I was so overwhelmed when going from traditional art to digital, but this video helped a lot. Thanks Sam! ✌️
This is really helpful! I've been drawing portraits for a while now but I have been figuring out proportions based on the reference pictures & by practicing. Using these grid lines makes it seem much simpler. Thanks, Sam
Him: telling us how to draw the correct lines to make a proportionally beautiful face. Me (takes screenshot of the video and uses the face to trace on everytime) “ah yes, I’m a pro artist now”
You're one cool dude. Have been coming back to drawing over and over throughout my life and always end up disheartened, or 'distracted.' Will definitely continue to watch your stuff, it's simple and to the point. Good stuff! Thank you.
Even though I know how to draw faces, watching these beginner videos feel refreshing. Sometimes I draw so much to the point that I forget what I am even doing XD.
thank you for this video, it really helps me a lot! I just started with drawing and I still don't know if this is really something I want to do long term, but you and your videos really just boosted my motivation to the moon.
Some art places I’ve been trying to get scholarships have asked that we provide artwork that we don’t use a reference on and I’m sort of freaking out 😳
@O that’s literally impossible tho. Even if u draw something entirely from your head you’ve built a visual library where you’ve seen it before, using a reference in your head 🤔
I always struggled with drawing eyes but, this really helped👍 And a reminder for young aspiring artists, you DON’T have to be born with an artistic talent, you CAN mess up, and you CAN restart and learn from your mistakes. Stay positive y’all, as long as you enjoy art, and want to keep doing it, nothing can stop you👍
And on the flip side: if you *do* have natural artistic talent, it alone is not enough! For the sake of my point, I'll throw modesty out the window: I have artistic talent. I've had a knack for it from a very young age, and my art consistently turned out better than my peers while growing up. BUT. I never really applied myself. I didn't learn technique, I didn't study anatomy, I didn't even practice. The only 'practice' I got was when I was drawing actual pictures. And guess what? It caught up to me. My art skills were quickly left in the dust as I got older, and while I'm over thirty now there are artists in their teens/early twenties who absolutely smoke my art. I've only recently started studying art properly, and I'm realizing just how much I drew from 'intuition', and how often that intuition came up short. It was 'good enough', but it held my art WAY back. Now my art is improving dramatically from studying and *practice* (serious emphasis on practice), and it's thanks to people like Sam who generously share their knowledge with the rest of us. So to reiterate, don't let a lack of talent hold you back (you can compensate with hard work and practice), but don't let having talent hold you back either (without hard work and practice, your skills will plateau early and will stagnate). In summary: no matter what, hard work and practice are essential to developing your art to its fully potential! Also, since simply saying 'practice' in a void is kind of vague, here's an example for anyone wondering what sort of practice I've been doing: right now I've got a digital canvas covered completely in noses. Noses of all different shapes, sizes, and from various angles. I've learned SO much from drawing all these noses. Noses now look different to me, because I'm looking at them from a whole new perspective. The types of nostrils, the angles, the shapes, hours and hours of drawing noses has taught me so much (along with watching videos on drawing noses). I've found myself staring at peoples' noses while talking to them now, lol. I kept looking at Sam's nose while watching this video. But it's enhanced my game so much, I'm finally starting to become happy with how I draw noses. So when one is told to 'practice', it often means repetition. I learn the most from making mistakes, so the more mistakes I make the more I learn. I've learned how to draw a nose by learning how *not* to draw a nose, and the only way to learn that was by repetition. I know this is a wall of text, but I hope I was able to help somebody out there with this comment. Happy drawing, and know that I am rooting for all of you artists 100%!
This was definitely a great help. I just recently got myself a drawing tablet and am getting ready to practice the drawing fundamentals once the angled tablet/book stand I ordered gets here (it's a screenless tablet, but I've found it's far more comfortable to work with when it's standing up than when it's laying down horizontal). I'm looking forward to drawing some of my personal OCs to practice portraits, anatomy, and posing, so I figured I'd look for some videos that tackle the different parts and pieces of that, and this was a really helpful guide. I think I'll be keeping this channel in my back pocket going forward!
Start of the video: "We're not gonna study any antomy, nothing like that..." A half minute later: "So this is the part of the skull, what holds your brain and..."
I love your videos 😭😭 they are always interesting, and you explain everything so clear and easy. You are really inspiring. Whenever I want to draw I watch your videos and it just keeps me going and it's a lot more fun
i LOVED this tutorial, but i have a question because i’ve been losing my mind: HOW TF DO YOU DRAW YOUR EYES?????? i love your art style, and especially your eyes are something i really like, but they’re so specific and expressive that i can’t do it for my life 😀
this is truly the best explanation i've found so far!! thank u! it really helped me learn how to get the proportions right. i was drawing a massive head and then the smallest facial features so it always looked off. thanks!!
I know I'm late to the SamDoesArts party.... But you have no idea how thrilled I was to see that this new artist I discovered--one that FINALLY looks like what I'd like my work to emulate--has his own tutorial. I'm fairly new to portraits but I feel like learning from you, I'm already on the right track! 😁 Thank you for sharing your gift with all of the hungry learners like me!!
*WHEN IN DOUBT JUST GIVE EM LONG HAIR TO COVER UP THE EARS!!* ***inserts sly smirk.*** i feel attacked personally - edit: ok hold on- I just got to the small forehead bit - i can't. 😭🤣
Fabulous tips and techniques Sam. I've started my drawing journal now, following your advice. Look forward to the journey ahead with learning to Draw with you. Have an awesome day 😊
Whyyy didn't i see thiisss videoo beforeee I used to try and draw faces and stuff and wanted to have my own art style(cuz ppl who have it just seem so cool to me) But one day ,i just randomly like started drawing better faces cuz of just random lines n stuff But if i had seen this Earlier(seeing it 2 years later when it wz posted) I'd have developed and learned so much,oh well, it's never too late to learn Thank u Sam✨✨😁😁 You're amazing
Sam: "The bottom of your ears are near the bottom of your nose, and the top of your ears are near where your eyes start." Me: I apparently have big ears
Omg omg I'm literally so happy rn cause I simply watched ur vid understood wtv u told and tried it out and IT WORKED!! U don't know I've been trying to understand this from a longer time and it simply just couldn't process in. Fr thanks man!
I’ve been watching your videos for a week or two now and I finally got the courage to do my first portrait painting, your tips definitely helped me a lot thank you!

I feel like Sam does a really good job at explaining how to draw the face. It’s the best video and it really helps me get an understanding of how to draw faces
