That is beautiful. Funny, but I've been drawing, painting, etc., for almost sixty years, but I'm still addicted to watching art videos. Even ones aimed at beginners because I seem to learn something new every week. There was no available internet and no RU-vid for most of my life, and I wonder if new artists know how extremely lucky they are to have such a resource? Anyway, the time factor is where I see a lot of beginners fail. When something doesn't work in an hour or two, or ten or twenty, they give up. They don't seem to realize how long it can take even an expert, professional artist to get a drawing right, let alone a painting. I have a friend who's is a wonderful woodcarver. He carved a horse a couple of years ago, and it was only about fourteen inches long, but it took him six months to get it right. Patience may be even more important than talent. I don't really know him, but I met a woodcarver at a local show several years ago who does incredibly complex, stunningly beautiful works of art of birds and landscape that seemingly are alive. The kicker is that he was blind. Needless to say, it takes him a very, very long time to create one of these wonderful wo0rks of art. Most would have quit when they lost their eyesight. I suspect I would have. But he didn't, and even though it took years,, and even though each creation can take two or three years, he kept going. Patience is a virtue. A necessary virtue, if you want to succeed.

Talking about the roof tiles reminded me of a modelmaker I came across some years ago. He made scale models of things like castles which you will know were built out of blocks of stone. Originally he would try to represent all of the stones in a wall. But realising what a mammoth task this was he decided that instead of representing all of the stone blocks he would just add enough for the person viewing the castle to see that the walls were made of stones. So you would get a patch of five or six stones in the middle of the wall along with a few at the corners rather than the whole wall. The human mind would fill in the blanks. I do wonder how many people would later be convinced that the while wall was covered in stones.

That is a fantastic rendering of 'The Hay Wain'... I love Constable's paintings, and if you ever get chance to learn about them in more detail, they are truly fascinating! (a lot of them ended up with changes made to the original figures/animals). They were a huge favorite of my Nan, she had prints of them all around her living room walls, and they remind me so much of those fond memories... Thanks for that, and once again, excellent job! :) xxx

Excellent drawing there Smoothie, Really like the way you done Willie Lott's cottage, I read once that the small building at the front of the cottage was the outside toilet, and Constable put that small tree in front of it to cover it up ..lol, anyway, Nothing wrong with copying the masters, It's a good way to learn, I've done the same in the past, Another one of Constables I done years ago was "Boat-Building near Flatford Mill" (used to do oils then, but not anymore) but like you, just for my on benefit. Stay happy and keep drawing....

I am an oil painter myself and I have painted the hay wain 3 times. Two 30x20cm ones, and a very large one which is almost the size of the original. I can say you have done an excellent job here. Even though you don't have to worry about colour, only values, it still seems difficult to do it by pencil, specially the trees. Excellent job! My only criticism is the perspective of the lake shore near the house is a little off and the sky's values are a bit off. Other than that.... Excellent
