Getting my body weight down to where it should be for my height has made a massive difference to how I look and feel. Clothes look a lot better on a trim frame and opens the door to slimmer fitting styles, particularly with shirts.
I'm a 57 yearold grandfather with a half decent build. I love wearing joggers with a tee shirt and wearing various shoe styles. The right clothes, color combinations and proper fit can make even an older guy look good. Neutral colour combinations are the best. I actually dress better and look better than 30 years ago. Enjoyed your video.
At 39 years old I went from decades of a "rock" or "skater" look to a Classic style thanks to your channel, Gentleman's Gazette among others. I'm 42 now. When I'm skating, it's jeans and tee, otherwise I'm rocking the sports coat with dark denim, chinos or trousers. It's been quite a journey. You guys didn't brainwash me or anything. I've always joked around about "wearing a suit everyday" as my main fashion. Watching The Modest Man has shown me how to own classic styles in an organic and casual way.
The same journey with me. These guys are great. I'm amazed by all the attention I'm getting from the ladies by just adding a simple sport coat to my wardrobe.
sucks for you. Hoodie are the greatest article of clothing ever made. You can still dress younger and dress up when you feel like it. Its not one or the other
@@snorrevonflake Some people’s tastes changes throughout their life. I gave up the skater look when I discovered other styles I like better. I wear the gear that best fits the occasion from my perspective. It’s actually fun.
@@speggeri90 Creating your own style can be doing something for yourself, and to create anything you need to take inspiration from things that already exist. So I don't see how checking out a style channel contradicts his point of dressing for yourself.
I’m 65 , I decided some years ago to dress how I wanted, and not like everyone else, I regularly get compliments on how I dress, I also think a well kept beard goes well on a well dressed older man, had one now for a year ( wife’s not a big fan tho🤷🏻♂️)
Nicely done. I am 5 9 and 180 lbs. I am in excellent health and physical condition. I am tired of searching through these channels only to find a 30 year old woman trying to tell me what not to wear. I am now a subscriber and look forward to more videos like this.
Trim the fat is probably the best advice. Also, look after your skin. Been noticing that I've been getting glances from women much younger than me when I wear fitting (not tight) t-shirt and dress shorts (not too long, not too short). I asked my 17 year old daughter who I see once week "Do I look like I workout?" She simply answered "Yes". It's a good feeling to be acknowledged. I'm turning 55 this year btw.
Thanks for making this video. I think a lot of Brock’s advice just naturally works for those of us a little older. Good style is timeless. The white Oxford button down shirt - definitely a staple in my wardrobe. But I buy some other colors too. Yes avoid labels, but as a thin 61 year-old I still buy solid Ralph Lauren Polo shirts with the smaller logo only and on sale. The newer bigger logos are garish. Their custom slim size fits me like a million bucks and look way better on me than a solid Tee. Nothing comes close in terms of fit. Also for me, a skinny fit jean or chino just fits way better and doesn’t look weird. I’ve been skinny my whole life. Stick closer to timeless classics if you’re older. Brock is one of the best sources for fashion advice regardless of age. Even though we’re not in your target market take it as a compliment that older men listen to your advice. Good fashion is ageless and timeless in some sense. Thanks again.
I've started changing my style about 1 1/2 year ago (42yo), partly inspired by your videos and Brian Sacawa's channel. With this video I've realized that I am exactly doing the right thing, since I've been following nearly all your mentioned tips already. Thanks for videos like that, which help finding your own way a lot!
If your in your 50s and 40s, keeps up with yourself and looks younger than you are please dont be afraid to dress trendy in current age most younger ppl love seeing someone older that doesn't dress lame and has style even if its their own unique sense of style. You see ppl like Tommy Lee from Motley Crue, and many more men over 50 that looks amazing and natural in what they wear its not the 90s wear what ever you want that makes you feel happy if Ringo Star can rock a popular Bape hoodie at 80 years old, you guys out there can rock some street style its all about confidence.
I'm a guy of 57 and follow my own style with confidence plus stay in shape. I always get compliment without looking for it from both sexes because I dress for me and nobody else. My advise found your style and wear it with confidence.
The reality is that you have to wear whatever makes you feel good, whatever boost up your confidence. it's not about trying to look young or old is more about who you really are as a person and how confident you are in doing what you do, whatever it is you do. Of course there are limits, but if you decide to go to the extreme make sure you wear them with confidence cuz that way no body would judge you and if they do, remember, those are their own insecurities talking.I ride the train everyday and and I see people of any age of any size wearing whatever they feel more comfortable in.
Great video! I’m 2 months away from being 65. I’ve been told I have good taste and dress very stylish but not at all trendy. My suggestion is to find a designer or 2 that you like their style and fit and go with them. My favorite and go too is Ralph Lauren! Thanks for the video.
Everything you listed for what not to wear at age 40-plus applies universally to anyone who wants to be a stylish dresser. I never wore those types of clothing in my 20s because they looked slovenly to me. It's not age-specific, in my opinion, but just bad dressing regardless of age.
Style tip: Dress how the hell you want, be yourself, don't be pressured into being someone false. You can be casual as well as smart without looking 10 years older.
In my opinion, this list was about 50/50 (maybe 60/40). I won't run down the entire list here, but I think the "setting" of your attire plays a large role. For example, flip-flops with denim for a dinner or night out...nope. Flip-flops when I'm having a summer get-together on my patio around the firepit, cold beers and grilling out...yes, please. Classic white, black, navy tennis shoes anytime, but save the Nike Freeruns for the gym. BTW, I'm 53.
The beauty about being over 50 is that I can wear a tent (if I want to ) AND I wouldn’t give a hoot about anyone... I do WHAT I want WHEN I want WHERE I want.
This!! One of the perks of getting older is realizing that 95% of "rules" that we impose upon ourselves (like this video, sorry) are simply soul-crushing blather. Wear whatever makes YOU feel good about yourself and you will automatically walk with confidence and live with passion. Want to wear a hot pink t-shirt with a pair of paisley shorts and flip flops?? GO FOR IT! (And by the way when you see that person on the street go talk to them... those are the most interesting humans out there)!
I’m still a member of the Grunge generation. I’ve got my suits, black tie, and white tie sets. But every day on the streets? T-shirt, cargo trousers, flannel shirt, and Doc Martens.
Great video, and great tips. I wear suits and jackets for work, and even out socially (sans covid-19) just about every weekday. No tie sometimes, especially in the evening, but with a pocket square for color. But I find it so tempting to wear a zip up black, blue or light grey hoodie on the weekends, over a tee shirt and jeans. Think raking leaves and walks along the beach on brisk fall days. Hard to give those up!
Im 50 I still wear baseball hats to the back with Sandals .. I still wear sneakers.. Not too many basketball sneakers but I still wear them, I got 2 luxury cars 2020.. I'm fat ,stylish n single .. I made it the 50 who cares what people think🤦♂️💩... You only get one life live it your way
One thing I stopped doing a while back Is wearing Cloths with Branding on it or images. I don't feel comfortable anymore being a walking advertisement or symbol.
I’m a 41 yo woman, and have been riding my closet of kiddy closed for about a year now. I am fit and in great shape. However, I realized that in spite of the fact that I can still fit my clothes from my 20s, I need to transition to more mature styles and fabrics.
54 years of age at 110kgs or 270lbs fit i wear anything i want and get compliments from girls late 20s early 30s. Age is just a number if your in shape. 🤔👍
@@StarboyAngel Being in shape with muscles sets a guy apart from the other guys. Being a hot older guy trumps a skinny or fat younger guy even if the older guy is living paycheck to paycheck.
In watching these types of videos I never understood why once you hit 40 to stop wearing certain sneakers but only if you're doing that activity. I like wearing ripped jeans, jackets and slim fitted clothes and get told by younger folks I look good . One thing I have gotten into is fadora and don't wear baseball caps that much. I guess it all depends on the person.... I'm 52
I've reached "beyond" which is a little disheartening. At 62. Thanks for some concrete suggestions. It has occurred to me that it's time to put the goofy tee shirts away and I should be able to to remember 5 simple things. Just dropped by to say thanks.
I'm 51 and still dress like I'm 20. Point is, I like what I like and what I like never really changed. If people are unhappy with it, they can go and BLEEEP themselves. (Yes, I'm a metalhead and still wear metal shirts, white sneakers and faded jeans. AND I managed to have a career while keeping my long hair)
It's difficult to epress certain vital concepts, but I'm going to give it a dipplomaic try. Your personal presentation, neutral accent in English, and flawless grammar along with highly precise vocabulary choices add a credibility to your fashion counselling. This is important for many reasons as you are making a strong effort to not offend anyone who is facing the consequences of ageing. Saying good-bye to ones youth is not an easy matter, and some clothing items carry a full demarcation between being young and no longer being young. Also, one can become emotionally attached to certain clothing items, they way we might things they make us look. You are essentially breaking the news to the new generation of "older" adults. Move over and ship off your wardrobe to the thrift stores; that's a bit harsh, but your presentation does not ungraciously have that effect; au contraire. Thank you for these great and useful clothing tips. Outsanding video.
This is exactly where I’m at since being five years into my 40s.. looking like a grown man. No sneakers.. no ball caps… and wearing collared shirts, trousers, leather shoes.
good video. I never "tried" to look younger. I just never grew out of my younger mindset. Finally listened to my cool, hip daughter and now I get compliments all the time for being "dapper." I wish I'd seen your video and others like it a lot earlier though.
Faded jeans on an 80-year-old? I don't know how you can recommend something like that, regardless of whether it's worn by I don't know what fashion designer. Maybe you can also recommend cut jeans, right? As long as you have a navy blue jacket and leather shoes, what does it matter?
Great video. But I can't seem to give up my AJ 1's . 52yrs old and still rock em, these days with nice pair of dark blue jeans, a button down shirt, and a nice jacket or blazer.
I have looked at RU-vid presentations with tips for the older men and their wardrobe. I think that your presentation has a sense of caring. Other presentations I've watched have the tone in their voice of: "Hay old man, it's time to move on and not embarrasse yourself, we feel uncomfortable and sad for your and being near you ". Thank you for the respect. I'm 63 and very fit. I don't want to become an older man with "dat bod". We do have value with other gifts and talents we can share with you. One mistake you and other people who have channels similar to your show images of older men who can pull off a younger guy look without going too far. It's not a matter of wearing the styles you suggest, it's the money that oozes from their pant pockets. You can look look good when you have that kind of money. They know that they're rich and invest those high dollars in keeping them looking world renowned. They don't they want let go. It's risky, but do a show sometime actually addressing a blue-collar factory worker on the street. Instead, you show an array of world renowned designers or actors. It's a thought, that's all. Excuse me, it's time to put on some more 'Old Spice' :{)
I am 38 and I try and keep away from branded clothing, even trainers/sneakers I try get in monochrome so the branding is hidden. Invest in a minamalistic style but go for quality and value over quantity👌
Thnx for the video! As a guy with a high mileage I believe it all starts from within, 1. get in shape physical and mental, 2. cut booze and substances eat healthy sleep well and 3. be creative no matter doing what, with that frame of mind what you're wearing will reflect your inner self-simply it can't go wrong :)
Great video. You presented a well rounded selection of styles. I especially like that you shared other online style guides. I just followed you. Looking forward to more great presentations.
Teaching company courses are so great and seeing it here surprised me :). Thanks for your videos, you have fresh ideas and those help to develop a point of view when it comes to style.
With the quarantine I’ve been unable to get a haircut. Now my wife wants me to leave it long like the photos of Jeff bridges and Bradley Cooper. Definitely agree with her suggestion.
im looking into changing my style to the more nice and adult look, i´m turning 42 soon and since i been a skater most of my life, i tend to only wear gym pants, baggy hoodies and loose t-shirts and only wear Vans shoes. I still want to keep a youngish look as i am a "young" 42 and like comfortable clothes that does not make you feel too trapped and unable to move. I am gay and we do tend to dress younger then we are. I like wearing jeans but don´t own a shirt as i can´t find a proper fit as i am only 5,7 but stocky build and has a big beard and buzzed hair.
At 54, I love the new trend of distressed jeans. Guys like Rock star guitarist Mike Mushok of Staind and Saint Asonia always rocks dark blue distressed jeans. I love how comfortable they are and will wear a dark button up shirt or sweater. I also love to wear western boots with them. I also wear plain black Adidas sneakers , especially when it gets warmer outside. I love the hat ideas, not being a hat person, it's a great tip. I also love to match my watch collection with outfits. G-Shock Ga100 with black jeans and a plain T-shirt, or my Timex weekender with light colored shorts and polo . My Diesel Mega Chief with my dark blue jeans and black button down. I also have a few Vostok on a mesh to wear as a dress watch.
Enjoyed this video, Brock. As a older, shorter, small framed male I avoid ripped jeans, graphic Ts and ball caps worn backwards as much as possible. What I'm wondering about beyond age is the geographic factor. I live in SWF and the idea of wearing dark colors doesn't seem to fit. I tend to wear stone/sand chinos on the bottom and colorful polos on top here. My question is does geography matter more than age? I want to dress age appropriate, but I also want to fit into to the place where I live. Comment.
Nice video. One guy who pulls off the tennis shoes is Jerry Seinfeld. He wears dress shirts, sport coats, and jeans with tennis shoes, and pulls it off nicely
Graphic t shirts are cool it all depends on what the graphic is and if it gives an interesting statement to the fit as a whole, shows a fun casual element especially in a box t style, I like to go plain t shirt for more fitted T shirts in black grey white and navy
Great video, Brock. Good tips, all around. I’m 52 and have been watching style RU-vid videos for about 3 years. I learn something new every year. One thing I learned was NOT to wear white over grey, especially if you have grey hair. It will make you look super old LOL. I need to look up Eric Rodriguez. I like his style.
I’ve started dressing better within the las year. Kevin Samuels would always have a suit on and emphasized dressing up. I also tend to watch vintage videos and the comments always talk about how back in the old days, people always dressed up in public and how they miss that. I say, be the change you want to see. I dress up frequently when I go out and people surely notice! I get nods, smiles, etc. I’m 27 and I like your videos because we are similar height. I’m sort of limited in what I wear cause I’m a shorter guy. I’ve really liked your videos because they apply to me and I like your outfit ideas.
I'm from the 70's so I represent by wearing my suede adidas, black Dickies, and a hoodie, weather permitting. I don't have any shirts with pictures. I definitely WON'T wear pants that look painted to my ankles. I don't dress up to go shopping, but I don't slop about. Red sueds adidas, with say....a red hoodie and black pants. I don't do vogue. I'm not a tool.
Great Job on this Video My man...... Always a Big help and wanted you to know I appreciated you. Haven’t commented in a while. Again! Great Job ..........
I'm 58 and now stick to an all neutral minimal wardrobe....Lots of light grey's taupe tan and whites....I'm pretty thin always have been. And I always get compliments on what I'm wearing.
Sport logo clothes still look good in 40+ you just have to go sport top and more styled on the bottom half, I always get compliments when wearing my 3 stripe 80s track tops in various colours a fitted black t shirt dark chinos and a pair of iced white plain tennis shoes such a puma clyde puma court reebok classic or a adidas samba or stan smith chuck in a leather cross body bag to mute the sporty look for a spring summer day look
@@BrockMcGoff Nah it's definitely okay, quality over quantity man! While we are at it would you consider making a video about some style ideas for the summer / summer haul when the quarantine is over? I know you have done this before but it would be nice to have an update for 2020:) Thanks for the reply and great vid as always!
I just turned 50. Looked at my wardrobe, and it's painfully obvious that I am still dressing like I'm in my late 20's/early 30's. Started making slow, subtle changes until I find a style that I like. Some of my changes listed. Headwear: I own too many baseball caps with my favorite team's logo. I'm really enjoying the flatcap/newsboy hats. I also bought an Australian outback-style hat, which I'll rock for colder temps. I look quite young for me age (my profile pic is about 2 weeks old as of this post), so I try to show off my hair while I still have it. 😀 Jeans: I like 'slightly' faded denim jeans, got rid of the ones that are too faded. Black denim still looks decent. Doubt I'll ever give up denim jeans, but I'll keep looking around. Shirts: Waaaay too many black t-shirts, ditched the ones that have prints. Still opting for darker colors -- deep tan, olive drab green, brown/burgandy. I love the Henley-style long sleeve shirts and they go great with button-down shirts. Jackets: I own a cotton-duck Dickies jacket, rather worn but looks decent for everyday wear. Looking for a longer type jacket (similar to Jeff Morgan at 4:36). Haven't gotten brave enough for a blazer, but I'm keeping my eyes open. Shoes: I'm weaning myself off of sneakers, unless I'm working out. I find myself wearing brown or black hiking-style boots (retired military and old habits die hard sometimes). Eventually I'll get around to finding a pair of clean-patterned Oxfords that are comfortable & not hard on my feet. Hair: Still have it! And yes, the "swept back" look does indeed look good. I grew a beard and colored it (the chin area is straight-up grey and looks aged). Again, I embrace that I'm 50... but I'm taking advantage of the fact that I look younger. Just small subtle changes, until I get used to my new style. Thank you for the informative video.
Very nice vid! Just subscribed since mentioned my man Jeffrey style OG. As well as the others you mentioned. Constantly trying to nail my 40s look professionally and casually. Thank you
Here in Shanghai almost everybody over the age of 45 wears sports gear and trainers, almost always black. So while I agree with avoiding them in your 50s it can be affected by the culture. It wouldn’t look out of place here.
Nobody's forcing me to watch videos like this but my mother is this type of person. The type who is (or thinks they are) an expert when it comes to whether clothes or hairstyle suit the wearer, and invariably they feel the need to push their opinion on to others who are doing the "wrong" thing. Sadly I've had a lifetime of this and I'm sure I'm not alone. For me, having peace is giving up what I want and just doing as I'm told.
Wow. Years later this is popping up for me. Great points nonetheless. I’m a heavy dude and work in progress and absolutely no tailors in my area. When I buy a shirt I like they are usually tooling and the cleaners here seem to not want to alter anything that isn’t a suit. So disappointing! Love all type of sneakers, but when the occasion is formal, I dare not embarrass myself by trying to look too cool.
I'm a 60yr old CEO of a Pharma Company and lift heavy to moderate weights 5-6 days a wk... Thanks to that life style, I have wide shoulders wide back athletic build that allows anything I wear look awesome... I stick to solid colors, (black, white, light blue, pastels). Fitted clothing from Versace, Nordstrohm Rack, ZARA and H&M.. I am French so I dress like a European anyway... lol
I am 57 …I like all your suggestions and styles. And I would definitely dress like in the examples that you are showing if I am going to dinner or a party. What I don’t understand is what would be appropriate for my routine? I am a machinist and on my weekends I am always messing around with home improvement projects and running out to get paint, caulk and 2x4’s…sand and gravel…etc. What would you suggest for a guy like me who is always getting dirty even on his days off?…
