Driving in rough water is often uncomfortable but if mismanaged it can be downright dangerous. Apply these quick tips and the next time you find yourself in a bad situation you'll arrive back at the ramp safely and not nearly as sore.
Prepare before you go out in heavy seas. Be sure that you're wearing a life jacket ( PFD ) and always wear your kill switch while operating your outboard motor. Pay attention to your equipment and do preventative maintanence. The middle of the lake in large waves is not the time to have a minor breakdown leave you stranded!

Awesome episode!! There isn't a lot of this kind of info out there for new boat owners, or people who shy away from fishing rough water, to be able to learn a little about running rough water safely and not learning the hard way!! So thank you!! I would really like to see you re-visit this with another episode when there are the really big 3 to 5 footers, or when you get caught out in bad weather, just for a more of a visual.. Another thing would be the best way to cross big boat wakes when you encounter them while running. We deal with a lot of pleasure boaters that can kick off some monster wakes when plowing down the lake. Thanks guy!! Love what you're doing!!

You guys will die trying to get home in 6 footers. Closely spaced 6 foot wind waves come from gale force winds and enough unsheltered open water. I'm not feeling good even in a 28 foot contender. In a goddamn bass boat you need to just stay home. If you've ever seen actual 6 foot wind waves, which pretty much never exist on any lakes except the great lakes, you'll know to just stay home.

BeyondTheBounds Depending in the size you get, For under 21 feet, hit the waves at a 45 degree angle, pretty much cutting it. If the waves are too big take the boat off plain and ride the waves out.

Thanks Matt for the good info. Since I now have a Ranger the wind is the only thing that keeps me from getting out there with full confidence. All the years of fishing from a float tube and kick boat have prepared me for competeing at the front of the boat. My only hang up with my “real boat” is worrying about what I have to go out into once committed to signing up for a pro am. I know that with time on the water and just going through it I will learn and become more comfortable taking on big water. Thanks again for the great tutorials.

I don't know why I clicked on this video, but I'm glad I did. I thought the background looked kinda familiar, and then I saw Mt. Konocti in the background. I used to live in Clearlake, CA, and spent many years sailing and skiing around Clear Lake. I moved away about 7 years ago, and have never been back, but have been wanting to for quite a while. Still looks great. Lake county is still one of my favorite places to live. Thanks for bringing back some great memories for me of the largest natural lake in California.

I love fishing in nasty weather. I had a 2006 smokercraft promag 14 which is a small vhaul with 20hp mercury. I went out last fall in really horrible conditions. Not just waves but heavy rain. I didnt realize how much rain was in the boat until I changed spots and all the water rushes to the back of the boat. It was BAD! It was worth it. I caught 7 muskies all 40-50inchers. It was an epic day. So I don't fear rough conditions, I just have to respect it.

I live in south eastern Pennsylvania. Its not the best place for fishing but I have one lake that most people can't buy a bite. I have a few tricks on that lake. And that's the lake with the muskies.

Epic day I guess! Love those muskies but I fish Lake of the Woods and (once each year) and the rollers up there scare the snot out of me, even in a 19 foot Lund. Still not willing to pull My Ranger 520 up there but this summer might be the first time I do it. Unless I win a lottery and get a 620, too!

Great instructional. Good tips, good advice. Now, come to Ky lake on weekday barge traffic with a North 35mph wind and go from Ky dam to TN line. Got behind 3 barges, full! Thanks to my 21' stratos, it took a while, but we made it back. Ky lake is crazy if you get behind a barge about 5 miles. Take generating current, a good n/s wind, and you need to run about 50 miles, it's like the gulf of Mexico.

Personally, I think this is a great "how to" video. I fish on Lake Simcoe in Ontario, Canada in a 19 foot Legend - frequent flash storms, LARGE swells, a VERY unpredictable. huge, and unforgiving lake. The point is that your are correct about guys not wanting to fish on days where the water is up and white-capping, and they are in a small craft. The main thing is to cut the waves on a 45 degree angle as much as possible. Not only is this wise for comfort but it will keep you from swamping and having the crap kicked out of your gear and you. Also, good call on going slow if you don't have to burn through water - reasonable caution never killed anyone. Great video man - love your guys stuff! Keep posting!

You hit this one out of the park Matt. You never know when you will get caught in some bad weather, and many guys need to see this video! I've been fortunate enough to learn out on kentucky lake in some rough water and not get hurt. An idea for another video could be setting jackplate height, choosing the right prop, 3-blade vs 4-blade, etc. Great stuff again guys!

Me and my friend went out to a pond today and he ended up landing a giant 5.87lber!!!! He was using a keitech easy shiner with an owner beast! That was huge for Wisconsin. Great video as always guys!

I was using a square back canoe testing out a 3hp evinrude on a lake in northern Minnesota, once I was a good ways from where I was staying, the wind picked up good. The lake went from being calm to consistent small white caps, that was a challenge to keep the little canoe directed right so it didn’t get flooded or rolled, I made it back after finding and staying at protected bay that was in the right direction to get to without directing the canoe in a way that made it vulnerable to the waves, once the sun set the waves where a safe size again. That was a scary experience with the way that outboard equipped canoe handled those waves, and nobody else out boating to help me if I needed it. 🤞😨🤞

Great tips. Was out there last summer and the wind came up. Caught us off guard in the south end of the lake, as soon as we passed the bottleneck into the main lake we were in the 5-6 foot stuff. 3 guys in a tracker 175. Wasn't fun we went 5 all the way back to the north end. We were staying in the house with the big tiki hut on the end of the dock. Took us an hour and a half. That lake gets big in the summer!

I live in WI and I fish Sturgeon Bay a lot and all of the bay areas in Door County...our waves from the great lakes are no joke. Literally, on a bad day, white caps are at least 6-8 feet high if winds are about 15 mph and above, and they are deep and huge. Got caught in a storm one time in Sturgeon Bay and waves were at least 10 feet high with 20-24 mph wind. Never made it back to where I launched, had to set our boat on another local launch near I was fishing and wait out the storm. These waves shown on here in this video are considered low and calm on Sturgeon Bay lol. Getting little to no waves at all fishing here in Door County is considered a blessing haha.

You might be surprised to know that I (Matt) got caught in a monster storm going out of Rowleys Bay and fishing Washington Island... 25 mph+ out of the South East... it was as bad as it could be. I've seen your waves ;-) But when the waves are that big we're wayyyy too focused on the driving to worry about the teaching. Better to teach the concepts on small chop so guys can apply it on the big days.

Just got a 16 foot bayliner trophy and took my wife out in the rough water, it was her 3rd time in a small boat, but the bayliner handled the 2-3 footers like a Cadillac on cruise control. I've been around boats since 1985 when I got my first one and big or small waves can definitely get you if you're not careful. Thanks for the info.

so really my trouble with wind is trolling motor. i have 70lb thrust motorguide on an 18'7" nitro. should be plenty but i have to crank it up pretty high to use it and I'm on dual optima blue tops and get a solid half day before they render the troller useless. do I need new troller or possibly new batteries? what voltage should a fully charged optima show and how low voltage tells me I need to replace?

Come on up to the gulf of Alaska if you want to see big waves Hahaha 👍6ft seas is regular, 20-30ft seas isn't uncommon. I use an old military pontoon skiff with a 25hp Suzuki. (18ft) You wanna talk about sketchy, load that thing up with firewood by point hellen and get caught in a following sea with 4-6ft white caps.. Anyone fancy a little jogging? Three mile trip just turned into nine mile zig zag.

So I came here after fishing on Lake Erie today in a tournament and around 11am, the wind started coming off the lake, and that’s when the waves/choppiness picked up. Until today I had never run a bass boat on rough water. Needless to say I didn’t take the waves the greatest, but now I know what to do after being out there and watching this video. I’m not gonna lie as I did get a bit nervous when taking on water from not taking the waves the best.

I recently got to go out bass fishing and I was chucking a swim bait around. In one of your video descriptions it said you use 65lb braid and 20lb maxima ultra green as a leader for throwing swim baits. I don't throw super heavy swimbaits so I just use a Fenwick elite tech bass 7'5" heavy paired with a shimano curado 200 I I make all my leaders just shorter than the length of the rod but I found that with the 65lb braid and the 20lb mono I couldn't get the knot the joins the two to pass through the top guide very well. What knot do you guys use to prevent this. Also is it just because I don't have a actual swim bait rod that the guides are slightly smaller. I ended up just making my leader about 1ft long so I never had to reel the knot through and of the guides when I had to make a cast. Definitely not the preferred way because that leader would get used up very quick. Thanks for any suggestions. I really appreciate the help.

Great vid! Just bought my 1st bass boat last season. It's a tracker txw195. I know aluminum is much lighter than the glass boats, but I found myself in some 2 1/2 plus waves at the end of the year. I'm not gonna lie... pretty frickin scary! If you have a chance I would love to see the same type of video in the 3' range! It would be very helpful to me, and I'm sure a lot of others! Thanks

While it wasn't the worst of water it was very informative for me. I tend to stay off Percy Priest lake in windy conditions. I REALLY appreciate the emphasis on SAFTEY though. EVERY ONE should exercise extreme sensibility when throttling in any water conditions.

Great video idea! Took me about a year or 2 to really get comfortable with running big water. Still scares me from time to time. Can't wait to step up to a bigger boat. Running a smaller 18' with a 150 and I still catch some wakes side ways and scares the crap out of my and my partner haha.

I have a bass tracker 185 aluminum boat, will these steps work as well for me? My max speed is around 30-35, hand throttle and trim. you can have all the experience in the world but if the conditions are as bad as they get here then stuff still happens. my dad had been driving boats for 20 years and torpedoed a wave two weeks ago and flooded the boat. thank goodness for a new fuel injected motor and a bilge pump

That reminds me of a trip from Lester River to St. Louis Bay through 4 foot waves. If we went slow water came over the transom, at full speed we would be 15 feet over the trough between waves, water was draining out from the St. Louis bay boat launch all the way back to w. 27th st. (Duluth, Mn) Not enough Thundercraft for too much water

Trim up to about 1/4 throttle until your speed is up then trim up a bit more

Was hoping to see some rollers, that lake is pretty calm in my opinion. rough water to me is 2 to 4 foot white caps. They are real back breakers pounding over some of those waves. Finding the sweet spot on those types of waves is pretty hard both speed and trim play a huge part.

I was wondering why you connect your kill switch to your wrist instead of to your life jacket? I've always kept mine directly connected to the loop on my jacket. That way, there's no way for it to slip off or move if I get thrown out of the seat. I also don't have a hot foot. So, there's no chance of accidentally pulling the switch while running.

Honestly, when I connect to the lifejacket I forget its there and constantly pull the switch. If its on my wrist I don't pull it as often. Its sad but true...

This looks great but at a certain point when the waves get really big you have to make the call about when it's time to throttle right back and go gently up the face of them at 45 degrees, and power off to slide down the back. I have a small speedboat with a deep V hull and I may be underestimating its capabilities because whenever I hit medium chop I go into stealth mode, instead of trusting the hull to cut through at speed at the right trim level.

Its when the boat begins rocking side to side because its trimmed way out of the water and has no weight in the front end. You can drive through it but it takes perfect movements. I don't want to teach that... there is some liability and if you do it wrong you're going to wreck. Better answer would be to slow down :-)

great video Matt. I fish Toledo Bend a lot and the only problem with that lake is you don't really have a choice on how you run the waves. the boat lanes are pretty much north and south with some crossovers. If you get out the lane your probably going to smash a stump and that's really not good in big waves. lol. When the Elites came a couple weeks ago, Jason Christie made a 45 minute run north (that's on a calm day). He changed his prop to a 28 pitch to give him more bite and better control in the waves. Do you do the same or run one prop?

We just run one prop but its because we aren't trying to bog big waves to make weigh in. I (Matt) run the most stable prop I can with excellent lift and don't bother with top speed.

Good video.....Knowing how to drive in moderate to rough water is good for the passenger as well. A non boater may not have a console to hold on to or some "oh shit" handles to grab. Boaters have the steering wheel and the feel of what the boat is doing (acceleration and control) via being the driver. Like Matt mentioned going home after a day on rough water may make you hurt but the non boater could be very hurt (usually back or neck) so yes you have to be careful. Now on a funny note.....how many people have run down the lake at 65+ mph for 30-45 mins hitting small to moderate chop and feel the need to hold the family jewels? Hahahaha we actually used towels to sit on when I used to fish local tournaments and making those runs to keep things in place.....It helped a ton!

Sorry man, but that's a flat calm day on the English Channel where I used to fish from my 18 footer. :-) It's starting to get a bit rough when you're in 150 feet of water and lifting the warp plus 6+ feet of heavy chain off the bottom and yanking the anchor on each swell. That's when it's probably best to go home! Oh, and don't forget the tides! At full flow, 4lbs of lead on your rig would never hit bottom. Happy days! Plus points for emphasising the importance of using the kill-switch lanyard though. Too many people ignore that.

TacticalBassin i bet!! lol i just want to see you driving thru those big swells with walls of water on each side, that sounded crazy awesome!! this was a great video btw, couldnt believe how fast you got on that chop!! im bout to buy my first "real" bass boat and trying to learn as much as possible! you should make a beginners bass boat guide, like what to look for in a used bass boat, red flags or dangers, buying new, paperwork/trailers, electronics, or you know just newbie bass boat info you wish you knew, or wished somebody told you when you started bass boating, stuff like that! tell us some stories or show some pics of your first bass boats!

Big water with big waves that you did not expect, take every wave on a 45 degree angle small waves. The mouth of the Fraser river by wreck beach, will kill ya if your not on the ball. A number of years ago, I was explaining to a friend what happens at the mouth when conditions are bad. Before I knew it, the river pushed me into a death trap. I had to turn around and this is where people die. When your boat is on top of the roller, hand on the throttle give her everything ya got and do a 180 . Your boat will begin to go down hill into the next roller. The trick, when your bow is about to break into the next roller, put every bit of power to her so you can bust through it and drive up the next roller. If this is not done, the roller behind you will push your boat into the next roller and if not ready, will push you through the roller and to the bottom. That weekend 3 boats went down, and people died, unnecessary.

I got stranded on clear lake last year in my little plastic pond boat, i was fishing the docks up by Nice, the wind got crazy and i couldnt paddle fast enough and i ended up getting blown into the middle of the lake, took me all day to paddle back i almost capsized, ended up way past lucerne

If its an aluminum they'll always slam harder than fiberglass but staying on the throttle should keep the nose down.

Matt ....I got out on the water going in to the wind and it was really bumpyy....I tried to speed up to about fifty and it just wouldn't go away.my wife said her boobies were hurting from bouncing around....I threw her out the boat...almost lost my rods even though they were in place,so I slowed down,,,.....,when I went with the wind,,it was a brezzy! I have not had ANY issue with rough water since switching from a Ranger bass boat (Z20)....to a Ranger deep V (Fisherman Series) multispecies boat. Same "fishability" quality and stability. Just a whole different experience on the water. There is NO comparison. Try a Ranger 620 someday....even you "bank-fisherman". I have not changed my fishing style one little bit with this boat. Go to a multispecies boat and you'll never, ever get concerned about rough water ever again !!!
