Not putting the ball in play might be the #1 spoiler to a good round, and not squaring the clubface might be the #1 reason for not driving it in play.
In this video, we're going to show you a crucial element in your ability to square your face for longer and more accurate driving. There's a good reason golfers struggle with this issue and we're going to show you how to overcome it.
So if you'd like to hit more drives like the pros, make sure this element is in your swing.

Thanks for posting these videos, particularly this one and the pressure plate data. With a “stronger” grip one would expect it would be easier to start squaring the club face early and the groundward force on the handle would tend to flatten the wrist as the arms get below parallel. If the club is “stuck” behind there no time to square the club face on one hangs back to buy time and the club face snaps shut due to tremendous rotational forces. Soccer style field goal kickers thus hook if they plant left foot too early and push if they plant too late. Great work! These measurements will are a paradigm shift in understanding the golf swing comparable to high resolution video.

It would be difficult to argue against that, Ron. Great observations.

This is really amazing stuff ive been trying to tell my friends this but i think intuitivly ppl think you have to get your hands to a foot behind the ball to start that release roll move when its actually the exact opposite in that it for sure starts in the early part of the swing

Great video as usual gentlemen. Would the steel shafts in irons provide more of a 1:1 between grip roll and closure rate? And corollary theorem----for any club, shorter the club, the later one has the opportunity to start the grip rolling?

Love this discussion and good to understand that with a driver it’s not a 1-to-1 ratio of roll-to-closure. Are these pros rolling their trail arm over at all near or at impact with the driver or do we only really see that as part of the release action after the ball?

Hi Just saw this video. Totally eye-opening. Didn't realize the extent of the forces used by pros to square the club face. What are your thoughts on taking the club back closed with the club face shut Ala Dustin Johnson, hence reducing the amount of grip roll to square the club? I've tried this and it works but it does put lots of strain in my left wrist (rh golfer). Thanks in advance. R

Thanks! I have watched a lot of golf videos and taken lessons and never knew this. Love your evidence based approach. I am definitely a “no zoner” who thought clubface was supposed to close spontaneously as part of the release. Defining release might be an interesting future topic.
@AthleticMotionGolf
@AthleticMotionGolf 6 лет назад
You aren't alone on that one, Mark... unfortunately. How would you define "release?"
@markmorgan5999
@markmorgan5999 6 лет назад
I asked you first! Just kidding. I always thought of it as the centripetal force of the accelerating clubhead forcing the wrist angles and arm rotation formed in the backswing to “release” into the impact position. I have no idea how to make that happen consistently at the right time. I also recall Jack Nicklaus said you can’t release too soon which never made sense to me since early release would seem to me to be a cast.
@AthleticMotionGolf
@AthleticMotionGolf 6 лет назад
I don't think you're alone in that definition idea, Mark. We have some more content coming looking more closely at individual movements of the each wrist and forearm that should make Jack's comment make more sense😉

Thanks for this video guys, I do think I'm guilty of trying to "let the body square the club face" based on past lessons. Clearly, this grip roll is not just bowing of the wrist on the way down, but could you clarify specifically which movements in the downswing are creating the roll biomechanically? Is this forearm rotation/ "rolling the wrists over", or something different?

I would love to see a continuation on this to see what happens with wrist just after impact. Yes, there is ulnar deviation, supination, and extension coming into impact, but how does it unfold through and after impact. I'm interested in knowing how big a part the wrist extension plays among the three, or does the wrist extension stop right at impact? Love your videos!

Thanks so much for this great content. What about grip strenghts? I was wondering that with a very strong grip, much less or even no grip roll is needed to produce a square clubface everytime. Isn´t it easier to strenghten the grip and then just hold in order to have very little clubface closure rate? I am plagued by poor clubface control resulting in push or pull/hook shots and highly affected by correct timing in the swing. Keep up the great work!
@AthleticMotionGolf
@AthleticMotionGolf 6 лет назад
Great question, Moritz. Even very strong grips have a good amount of grip roll... the effects on that relative to face closure vary, but there is always face closure. The timing is very important, and often the difference for many golfers... early is better.

When I keep a flat left wrist at the top and then apply any amount of torque on the way down I get pretty serious hooks. I get Better results just letting the face close naturally on the way down rather than forcing any more closing of the face.

I’ve really been trying to focus on keeping the club face square to the top which has caused me to hood the driver face too much and hit some nasty hooks recently. I’m using a very neutral grip and still doing it. I’ve wanted to do this so I was in great position at top so I couldn’t just focus on my transition and release. Just when I feel like I’m starting to figure out the swing something new pops up. lol

Interesting stuff. How do you coach an amateur to feel this?
@peteb185
@peteb185 6 лет назад
a good way to feel this is to take your backswing, stop at the top, and feel as though you roll your knuckles down slightly before starting the downswing, and continue trying to feel that position through impact. I think the issue a lot of players end up having is that they keep a cupped feeling through impact and the face stays wildly open or your body instinctively tries to flip at the last second to square the face. I speak from experience on this one, and this slighty adjustment, while it initially feels awkward, it definitely changed my flight from a fade and push, to a straight or draw flight. almost instantly. the concept is generally known as 'knuckles down' and you can find a lot of information about it online.
@haricsl
@haricsl 6 лет назад
Hi- Isn’t the grip roll related to the golf release ie the first golfer is playing strong grip so is using more a body release whereas the second golfer is doing a full roll release so the grip roll naturally starts later due to centrifugal forces?
@AthleticMotionGolf
@AthleticMotionGolf 6 лет назад
Remember, "later" in the video is literally fractions of second because we're looking at is slowed way down. They both are happening early in real time.
@stryker2828
@stryker2828 6 лет назад
Mike, what happens after impact? I find that I continue "reverse motorcycle" and by the way arms are parallel to the ground in the through swing, my left forearm is completely facing the floor - in other words, my watch on left wrist is facing floor. This is too much, I presume? Do the pros stop rolling through grip post-impactn(assuming they want a straight shot as opposed to draw/fade)?
@AthleticMotionGolf
@AthleticMotionGolf 6 лет назад
Some do and some don't. What happens or what it looks like past the hit has a lot to do with the rotation of the body at impact. Higher rotational players tend to have less of that rolled over look, but there are always exceptions.
@mitchy7051
@mitchy7051 6 лет назад
what happens post impact is irrelevant, this idea of the "late" hit is totally ludicrous. you want maximum speed into the ball, assuming all the angles are sound. worrying about what to do after the ball is long gone after it hits your club face is a waste of mental energy. now the notion of "hitting at the ball" -> life long 30HDCP mentality vs hitting the ball to a target->golfers who can break 90 in their sleep is a totally different discussion.
@Uncle19
@Uncle19 6 лет назад
Can you exactly explain grip roll? Like when you said reverse motorcycle I got that, does it just happen I the wrist or does the forearm rotate as well? I feel I keep my wrist in a very strong position trying to get near Dustin johnson style but I still go right on occasion
@AthleticMotionGolf
@AthleticMotionGolf 6 лет назад
It's very difficult to isolate just the wrist movements from the forearm movements, especially with regards to what is rolling the grip. It's going to be a combination of both looking at the total amount of movement during the downswing.
@Uncle19
@Uncle19 6 лет назад
Athletic Motion Golf thanks for the quick reply! My main question is really should this move be a focus on my left wrist torquing towards a strong position as opposed to cupping, or is this move focused on rolling my wrist and forearm such that the back of my left hand points to the sky on backswing and then towards the ground on follow-through? It's hard to explain what I'm asking so sorry if that isn't completely clear. I've identified in my own swing that I often torque my wrist into a strong position (dj style) at impact however I see that if I don't rotate enough my face is still open at impact due to not enough closing of the club as a whole with my arm movements. Thanks again for your help!
@Uncle19
@Uncle19 6 лет назад
One last note, my first paragraph should phrase my left backhand points away from me and then behind me, not necessarily to the sky and to the ground, basically shake hands with someone to my right on backswing then shake hands with someone on my left on follow-through swing

Very interesting. Can you demonstrate this with a real golf club in another video? Is this a conscious move you need to be making straight from the top?
@AthleticMotionGolf
@AthleticMotionGolf 6 лет назад
If a player is having a difficult time "squaring" the face, especially with the driver, then yes it probably needs to be a conscious thought much earlier in the downswing.
@matthewsimone92
@matthewsimone92 5 лет назад
For Pro #1, who starts to square the face at the start of the downswing, how to they maintain leverage / angle / lag on the shaft? I am an early grip roller as well and start to lose lag almost immediately (clubhead starts to move out with shaft flattens immediately). If I over-do it, I can tend to get too shallow and the lose the club under and behind me. Just wondering what is happening to allow Pro #1 to maintain that a little better?
@AthleticMotionGolf
@AthleticMotionGolf 5 лет назад
Work on isolating the flexing/extending or cupping/bowing action of the wrists independent of the ulnar/radial or casting motion. It sounds like you are too biased towards the ulnar/radial motion and could probably use more of the flex/extend motion. That make sense?

Hi, With the delay from stimulus to response, would those applying the roll in the lower end of the pro zone have the impulse to do so from the top? Or are you saying that’s the band where the stimulus to roll the club occurs? Which would you say is more prevalent: an intent to roll to square or roll through and beyond square? Is there a pro that from mid-downswing, appears to be rolling the club ‘over’ with the left wrist in a more ‘bowing’ appearance initially as it supinates? Thanks
@AthleticMotionGolf
@AthleticMotionGolf 6 лет назад
1. If I understand what you're asking, I'd say their intent should be to do so more from the top. 2. Most have described it feeling through square. 3. All those are present from what we've seen. The amount of flexion will depend more on grip and where the wrist is at the top, but they all ulnar dev it. So I think I'd say the look you see is pretty accurate.
@1DCCX
@1DCCX 6 лет назад
Athletic Motion Golf thanks!
@1DCCX
@1DCCX 6 лет назад
Athletic Motion Golf I think that’s exactly it. I meant, if you measure that the grip roll starts say, at the bottom of the pro zone, then the impulse to apply the torque must occur earlier. So if I was say, leaving the face open and intending to apply the roll fractionally after the transition currently, I might consider intending to apply it right from top, or during transition.
@1DCCX
@1DCCX 6 лет назад
Athletic Motion Golf It’s really interesting that they feel a roll through square. Makes sense though as it might counter-act the collision?
@robsaxepga
@robsaxepga 6 лет назад
So my takeaway is the guy who's left wrist is bowed or flat (more toward the sky than the ball) at the top is going to do less work than the guy who's cupped at the top of the swing. The bowed, flat guy is swinging and holding it square more than the cupped guy. Is that a fair assessment?
@AthleticMotionGolf
@AthleticMotionGolf 6 лет назад
In theory, yes😊 But in reality, that long twisty noodle (shaft) between you and the clubface plays a huge role in how much and when you're work gets to the face. On the downswing, it's never a 1:1 ratio.

This is grip roll in 3D space not relative to the arm, right? I assume that there is grip roll in a golf swing no matter what you do. Dustin Johnson can´t do any more bowing of the wrist in the downswing, as he is already maxed out at the top of the backswing. You say grip roll is the amount of roll the player is putting into the grip (screwdriver move) to twist it close. I say nobody is bowing the wrist at 1000 d/s at impact. The grip rolls that much - yes, but not by bowing the wrist.
@AthleticMotionGolf

Correct, grip roll is a shaft metric. DJ does not keep his wrist(s) in that top of swing position. I've never seen anybody turn a screwdriver by bowing their wrists😉
