How to drop a cliff with snowboarder Xavier de le Rue
So, how to drop a cliff? Here are the tips and tricks that have helped me and will hopefully be useful to you whether you are just learning how to jump off rocks, or going for the big cliffs.
Dropping a cliff is not just about letting yourself fall from the sky. It took me years to understand that you need speed in order to get a good transition enabling you to stomp your landing. Lots of other small tips will help you to drop cliffs with confidence.
So get out there and have fun, start small, jump lots and stay safe.

Yeah pretty much what Nick said.. it’s a level of riding where if that doesn’t feel approachable you probably shouldn’t jump the cliff lol

Back protection makes sense. A back pack is mandatory and does a pretty similar job. I usually wear one or the other but if you feel safe with both you should for sure go for it like that

Ha - yeah, go for it with confidence, whether it is 30cm, 1m or 10m... I mean do start small though, so you learn the technique and to get comfortable before moving onto bigger drops. Have fun. XV

how do you distribute the weight on your feet in the landing? I can't help tomahawking (but then my board was very flexible, if that's a excuse..)
@xavierdelerue537
@xavierdelerue537 6 лет назад
Hi Micke, Good question. You need to be as much as possible on both your feet, and therefor you need a board with a big nose to make it easier to not catch the nose. Generally, speed help the transition and therefor the landing. I know it's hard to understand until you have felt it but trust me, find a jump and session it faster and faster and you will feel what I mean. (PS it has nothing to do with your board being too soft)

Is your weight central over the board for a faster/smoother run out or do you shift some weight back to keep the nose up?
@eneveasi
@eneveasi 2 года назад
Hi! He answered on another commenter who asked the same thing.. basically land pretty even with your weight but it helps to have a big nose on the board to not sink when you land. When you carry speed landing more even feels much better

What DIN value do you recommend for a experienced skier (10 year slalom racing) of 182cm and 70ish kilos?
@HOWTOXV
@HOWTOXV 5 лет назад
Hi India, Thanks for your message, ahh - as a snowboarder I really do not feel qualified to answer that and not give you the right advice. I recommend asking in your local ski store to see if they would give you a good answer. Apologies for not being able to help more, have a great winter. Xv
@2freaky41
@2freaky41 5 лет назад
Hi India, I'm a skier and I had the same problem. I went for try and error until it was right for me. I started with the value from a DIN calculator and tried to ride really aggressively off piste (in non-exposed area) to push the bindings to their limit. Anytime a ski would fall off although I was still in control, I cranked the DIN by an extra 0.5. That's what I did for the front part of the binding. With that method I went from 8 to 10 in my case. With that value I do feel a considerable jolt upon release that is still bearable but they stay on most of the time - even during some slams. In the beginning of the season I sometimes back off about 0.5 for the first few runs/days. To determine the value for the back part I go into a nose press and increase the DIN until the skis just stay on. Next I try nosepress 360 on slope and in powder and again adjust my skis. For a bit of extra buffer I go 0.5 to max 1 above the value where they stayed on (for me that was 9-9.5). Usually the back releases after a "front heavy cliff drop to tomahawk" landing ;) When you feel like they came off too easily in that situation or were a bit too strong you can change up the DIN again.

Morning, i just want to share with you an idea. I am old and crazy snowboarder. Million times less crazy :-) than you because i don't have heart to do what you are famous with. I don't know other youtuber snowboarder from Europe besides you. Americans like, Kevin, TJ, Rayan Knapton ,CV and Snowboard Additions are very active. There are some Russians also in the You Tube. But no Europeans besides you. I think that there must be more vids about kids and more vids with girls. This way you can make snowboarding more popular, because it is more fun than ski. Please be sure that no one is that experienced to explain the technic to hit the BIG ALPINE line like you, but potentially the people been able to do it are much less than kids which can be attracted in the snowboarding fun. Good luck and stay health.
