The worst has come to pass, and you need to take out your dear old buses engine. Alright, this is where us followers of John Muir and his book take the ultimate test, can we take the heart out of our noble steed? Specifically this is a 1975 VW bus.
Step- by- step this video will walk you through the process, from one backyard mechanic to another.
Anthony Siciliano provided the awesome original song in the back of this tutorial. "Calling On" is available on his soundcloud!

Amazing that the whole thing is held in by 8 bolts. I am still yet to have to drop the engine on mine, however this video is a huge help in planning for that big day.

I found on my 1979 bus I had to remove the dipstick cover that bolts to the block. This gave me a little extra clearance to pull the engine back before I could drop it down. Not sure if this is the case often but it helped me. I did the removal and install solo. I am sure your video will help anyone with removal of engine.

Thanks for the video. Pulled my 1976 bus engine today inspired by your video and ratwell's page. Much easier than I thought it would be.

This is really a great video with very detailed instructions for professionals as well as the diy as to what to watch out for if you decide to dive in. The other teaching videos are no good except to the skilled mechanic. Good job Colby !

NEVER- EVER jack the bus using the underside of the engine block. !!!!! You will distort the aluminum there and hence ruin the tolerance of the crankshaft bearings a few cm above it ! The right procedure is: jack the bus on its designed jackpoints right and left. Place it firm on short columns. Now place a big firm flat plate on the jack, place it under the engine, its centre of gravity. Apply very light load, to unload the engine bolts. Now let the engine down. Jacking a Beetle of or even a heavier bus under the block cause distortion. It is COMPLETELY WRONG. You can expect an expensive a line boring of the bearings of the block. Every commenter saying how good you are is wrong. (my opinion only) With KIND gerards, Louis van Rijn.

It is not a T4 - I think it's T3 and ought to remember but don't. I have a T4 my friend and have a job to do on it. Perhaps you might be good enough to change the title which might stop the misleading search results whilst, if you add a tag (one of these - '#') you may gain some relevant views which help those who came to research whilst also sharing in your ventures - :-)

Mechris12345 . T4 front mounted engine. Before this the engine is rear mounted as this video shows, tough a T2 or T3, I didn’t check.
