Great info....adds another dimension to the enjoyment of the catch....valuable knowledge on what it means when I harvest a “nice size “ perch or walleye.... it take “years “ to replace it (makes one value the day more). I like the pacing of the video.......great job!

Gord - Great video! To make it easier for students, we used to use blue food dye in solution with a little water to soak them after they were initially cleaned and dried. The tightness (density of calcium) of the winter lines absorbs little and becomes even easier to see. Again - thanks for taking the time to share these interesting and important facts. ~Tight Lines~

I thought you said "how to EASILY" tell the age of fish! My friends shot 2 moose one year and were required to send in a tooth for examination. One disposed of the head of his prior and ended up sending in a tooth from the same animal. The results were VERY surprising. One tooth was 4 yo and the second 12 yo! So much for "science"!!!)))

These desciptions are well documented and understood. Some of the techniques we use in aging fish species in the developing world are crude and difficult to undergo due to lack of sophisticated and modern equipment that are available in developed countries. I am a fishery biologist and have interest in fish growth and aging, can I have opportunity of training in your institute? Thank you.

This is unreal man I’ve never seen anything regarding this.....btw tho just going off there size I nailed it on the head for both fish I guessed 6 or 7 for the perch and 3-4 for the walleye
@TakeDeadAim
@TakeDeadAim 3 года назад
For perch I take the length and divide it by 1/2 for age. Walleye is about 1/3.

this is an interesting video and makes much sense a thing my dad always did when i was a kid that was also interesting is cutting its stomach open to see what it ate . i will probbaly try this one day...smoe fish i catch if this walleye being 14 inches was 4 years old i cant imagine how old some are when i go fishing maybe 15 years old or soemthing.

Nice video.. Shows the importance of how slow fish grow and stop being greedy and release big fish.. Hate seeing people harvest huge female walleyes and Pike.

Lake Erie minimum walleye is 15". The ODNR estimates -2 years old. We quit fishing in Canada. The customs agents are assholes at the boarder when trying to bring fish home. We spend our time and money fishing in the US because the Canadian regulations just got rediculse.
@gregorykinney3981

I did this on a huge 29 1/2 inch walleye my cousin caught on Lake Erie. The fish was about 11 or 12 years old according to the method in this video.
@CanadianAnglingAdventures

That sounds pretty accurate for the fast growing walleyes in Lake Erie!

I guessed 5 and 3. Not terrible...I wonder if this works with other species? Rockfishes on the BC coast can live over 100 years.

I guessed 7 for the perch and 4.5 for the pickerel. The perch is more difficult to guess be a use of the some size difference from year to year. The pickerel is easier if you fish a lot. I use to guide and once you spend a lot of time on a lake and have caught a large number of one fish species you can identify the distinct different sizes for each year. The sizes differ for different lakes. As a rule of thumb I do not keep large fish due to potential breeding and the fact that older fish have accumulated a higher level of toxin due to bioaccumulation. As a rule lake trout are a year for every pound. Never keep a large one for consumption. On the other hand a 20 lb salmon is only 3 years olds. Knowing the species you are targeting is defiantly interesting and helpful. Thanks for video. I suspect the dorsal fin ray, if sliced can be read like the rings of a tree also.

Thats the easy way?how about dividing the length of the walley by the number of inches on average it grows in a yr? Also pulling 14in walleye out of a lake should be illegal

Why keep a 14" walleye.
@CanadianAnglingAdventures
@CanadianAnglingAdventures 3 года назад
Because they are the more expendible members of the population. A farmer doesn't kill his prime brood stock - so you release the larger eye laying mature fish and keep one or two smaller fish for dinner. Many areas now have a "no kill regulation" on walleye over 18" to protect the brood stock. It is good conservation!

Darn, Gord, get to it. Get to the point. The point, get to it. We're going to come back tomorrow and get to the point. Get my point? BTW, what about that was easy? Easier than, say, carbon dating but not as easy as counting fin rays or contours on scales. That would have been "easy." You seem like a personable guy, just a tad (polite) loquacious, imo.

I'm a Biology teacher. Your subject matter was very interesting. But, your delivery was way too long and too repetitive. Make shorter videos. The set up was good, but you need to get right to your point. You'll get more views if people don't have to sit through a 12 minute video. Think of it like a "joke". If you do 12 minutes of set up, that better be one hell of a punchline.
