Trigger > Urge > Action (Binge Eating). 1) Identify trigger by using a food journal for seven days 2) Change your physiology (for instance by breathing, going for a walk, running, jumping up and down) to stop the urge from building up (as high emotion > low intelligence when taking decisions) 3) Keep hydrated as thirst is often mistaken for hunger 4) Have breakfast to avoid the feeling of overwhelming "hunger" Form the habit of another response to the identified trigger instead of binge eating. Awareness is key. P.S. Olfactory: smell; Gustatory: taste. This is one of the most useful statements I have ever seen on the topic of binge eating. Thank you!

After having read 'brain over binge', 'intuitive eating', 'eating mindfully', watching sooo many videos and reading countless articles I can honestly say this has been the only video that has ever helped me! Binge eating is something I have struggled with for about 3 years.. I used to binge every other day(or at least twice a week) and now I am two weeks binge free. I can't wait to get to the 21 day mark with all my new habbits. THANK YOU! My life has been changed :-)

@rawbirbella justthat I guess it depends on how the person's mind works. It was not helpful for me cuz even though I understood what she was saying, it wasn't that easy for me to flip the switch in my head.

I feel like I don't even have a trigger, I just am constantly thinking about food. I go through phases where I either struggle with not eating or I struggle with eating constantly, I don't know how to have a positive relationship with food. I hate it, I can't keep doing this.

@meli. try reading the book NEVER BINGE AGAIN (it's free on kindle). it's very good and offers a practical approach to stop binge eating. I am out of control right now but found that book very beneficial. it's based on the RATIONAL RECOVERY METHOD for stopping addiction. I would also suggest listening to the audiobook by tony robbins called THE BODY THAT YOU DESERVE.

Binge eating, self soothing....same as any addiction. Food is the go to instead of drugs, alcohol....etc. Everything you have said in this video is spot on. My triggers, are people. Alcoholic abusive mother, bi polar narcissistic brother, and a biological father that left when I was 2 - has tried for the last 3 years to come back and be a dad and grand father. I'm 40 now, you can't go back.

so overeating is a distraction for us when we have emotions we don´t want to face or deal with. understanding this will make us more willing to face these emotions and more willing to not run to the distraction of overeating.

Dear Matt, two years ago I was at my worst of my eating disorder journey. I remember being so frustrated that I could solve almost all problems in my life but couldn't stop my BED. One day I decided that I needed to win this battle. I looked up RU-vid videos and this video was one of them. It took me more than a year to completely stop my binge eating habits. I also went vegan after I recovered. My life has become better since. Thank you so much for all you do. I found your channel again recently and I have watched 90% of your videos. Thank you for saving my life. I am very grateful for you and all of your good work! Love ❤️

Matt, thank you very, very much. I've been stuck in the binge eating cycle for so long that I felt hopeless and lost, especially right now when I'm in one of my worst episodes. Years ago I managed to kind of control all what you mention: the triggers, the urges and the reactions. I lost 20 kilos 3 years ago, keep that weight off for a year but then I went through difficult times when mainly the triggers where negative emotions. Soon, the sense triggers started taking over as well. Now, I was feeling like I couldn't control all of what was happening : the smell, the "chocolate" in the kitchen, the stress, the low self esteem, the "I hate my body so much - - - (urge) I feel so depressed, frustrated, anxious, etc - - - (action) Let's eat more, I'm fat anyways, I'm lonely anyways... That was my mindset. However, I never gave up, I kept looking for a solution and attended meetings, read articles, etc. Well, THIS talk really caught my attention. This "talk" was pure learning and awareness. This video, you TALKED to me. I feel completely different because now I understand things that I just " felt" or experienced before. Now I can do something about it. Again, thank you so much for this, you have no idea how helpful it is. Thank you, thank you.

I get the urge to binge after going over 12 hours only having applesauce to help get my medication down. Then I eat a lot. I feel like shit after. Then I restrict again. I fall easily into this cycle. Being fat, no one takes me seriously, and I have no help for it.

dieting or restricting is the kiss of death. trust me. I have had great success dieting in the past but eventually it will catch up with you. I am an expert binge eater. don'r even focus on saying you want to lose X pounds. just focus on having a size 1 waste or size 10 waste etc. most people really don't care how much they weight. they care how they LOOK AND FEEL.

Thank you thank you. I have the same problem. After a beautiful Intermittent Fasting meal I was totally happy and satisfied. A few hours later my daughter bought a pizza and after a few minutes of watching her eat that pizza I asked for a slice, then another. Later that night as I lay awake in bed I began to beat myself up about subcoming to the temptation. This has happened several times during my IF eating window. If I don't overcome this my weight goal will never happen. I'm getting that book Brain over Binge.

My trigger is immagination, possible? I often find myself having fantasies about food and what I could eat, expecially when I'm in a place I don't want to be, or when I'm forced to be or do something, or when I feel discouraged or powerless (I can easily feel this way, because I am a perfectionist, so as soon as I feel I've done something out of my program, I feel like it cannot give me satisfaction and happiness, and this is true! I'm "happy" just when things are perfect - if ever possible. I have to add something: I think some people (also me) don't always binge for bad emotions. Sometimes, they binge just because they feel something big, which can be sadness, anger, etc. but also relief, for example, or a sense of freedom they're not used to. In this case, binge eating could be a way of celebrating it, or a way to express it.
