Timecode for multicam and audio is really underrated thing lot of videographers dont know about. Click of a button and davinci syncs the multicam timeline in 0.1 seconds. No analyzing audio tracks, no waiting, no errors with some audio files not syncing up etc.
Among the fifty bazillion tutorial videos on YT, yours are always among the best! Your pace, delivery, and teaching style are super on point - thanks for being such a great resource for the community.
This is a good workaround but it seems a little clunky as well. The deity pr2s coming out will negate the need for an ultra sync blue because they have time code built in and can be monitored on the app. Also they will be cheaper. Then you can get the cheaper deity tc1 to mount on camera, overall save money and less parts to potentially fail. I get where you are going with this Matt you are trying to appeal to those who already have their gear but for those that don’t this is a better long term investment.
Im glad you are making this video because I have been preaching timecode with my colleagues, but no one pays attention so I am sure this will help so many people.
I shoot ceremonies with up to 8 cameras & several recorders/lav mics & I edit in Resolve so I know how hit & miss the sync audio by waveforms can be. My solution to the whole “timecode” scenario was to purchase “Syncaila” & itI have never an issue since. Even all the little individual 5 second clips form my roving gimbal are synced perfectly & I can shoot any frame rate & there is no extra pressure on the day having to worry about all that timecode setup stuff. Nice review but no thanks!…….lol👍🤗🤘👌I’d love to see you test & review Syncaila. 😝
I use syncaila and well is it much better then manually syncing based on waveform……DUH lol. It does work magic in ceremonies I’ve never really had a complaint when it comes to syncing the whole ceremony with multiple cameras and audio recorders and compared to other programs I’ve used it sync even the shortest clips but one thing I noticed is that it’s not that good with loud receptions. It works for ceremonies it does and that alone is worth the cost but a lot of my work is to deliver the complete day ceremony and reception and when it came to reception I started to experience audio drift and man is that a pain to fix when your dealing with 5 hours worth of footage and audio from the dj. That alone is why I’m looking at timecode not blue sync but I’m thinking of Deity. I agree with you that syncaila is a pretty dang good program it amazes me what it can do but the audio drift in the loud receptions is where it’s failing me and if using time code will save me the 3+ hours of my life fixing audio drift in my reception footage im gonna buy it. Sorry for the long winded comment I just hope this gives someone else the info they might be looking for in the syncaila program considering I couldn’t find any info online about it for wedding reception. It is worth the money for sure but I think it’s limits are loud environments. At least for me 😂
very timely video Matt, i just started using tc after much frustration syncing audio and video...i use deity tc-1 3 pack ultrasync blue ultrasync one tascam X8 with bt adapter and rode wireless pro ALL TC CAPABLE!!! got my cold breakout and setup tc on devices and Canon r7 and Blackmagic bmpcc 6k PRO, down to about 8-10 minutes to GO SHOOT NOW status, but i gotta tell you it is TRICKY DICKY TIME easy to do once you practice it a few times i would never shoot a wedding without testing this setup thanks for your efforts man it helps those of us looking to up our production values
Tentacle Sync E with a zoom F6 is killer easy but ya might need a cellphone -Android and Iphones work great. Tentacle software does all the work...might be a little more expensive but is so easy. Ya just have to pay for convenience. I'm curious if the splitter works with Tentacle with a DJI mic connected . . .
Note that the Canon M50 mic input is not true stereo, but one channel will always bleed into the other channel amd vice versa, so recording scratch audio and timecode onto two discrete channels will not work. My workaround: use the Ultrasync slate app on an old iPad, connect that to the Ultrasync Blue and show the iPad screen to the camera at the beginning of each take :)
This is such a fail you need to purchase a bunch of these for different cameras I wish it could just jam since many cameras take timecode….is a fail that zoom and tascam went with this instead of tenticle sync or deity
Diety has a nice timecode ecosystem, but the PR-2 is delayed on its release, and their wireless Theos sets don’t record and transmit at the same time for the US. Tentacle also has a nice system.
In one of your videos, you say how much you love the Deity PR2 and how it can jam the timecode in a camera like the Sony FX6 (which I am renting for an important field trip to Indonesia). after watching that and some Curtis Judd videos on teh PR2, I bought it and think it is ALMOST perfect. My problem is I also need to use the Zoom F3 on a boom. Is there any way to use the PR2 to set the timecode on the Zoom, or do I still need to use the Atomos Ultrasync Blue? How to I sync my F3 to the other two; the FX6 and the PR2?
Hi Matt, I just brought the testacy x6 because you said its good, and now im using Sony FX6 any idea what is the easiest way to do timecode with this to please?
Why not go with with a Deity system? The wireless transmitters record internally 32 bit float and support timecode. And the timecode kit from Deity syncs just like the transmitters through the app. You'll be able to monitor audio where as with the recorders you can't. Yes it's more expensive but I think it's a more open system that would work with more gear than the Atomos one.
Deity makes great stuff, but I haven't had a chance to test it yet. I know many filmmakers have Zoom or Tascam audio recorders and want to use timecode with them so I made this video. :) Hoping to make a video about Deity in the future.
@@whoismatt not complaining of course. The contrary, I appreciate the content because it's very helpful. I know it's not easy to keep making videos and I don't take it for granted. The Deity Theos though addressed a concern of mine. In the past I've had unusable audio in cases where there was rustle noise, cables coming undone, drop outs. With it I can monitor the audio for these issues, and in case of a drop out I'd have the recording.
I don’t think the splitter cable would work with the other time code boxes because they have scratch audio on the other channel. Only will work with this system
Hello Mr. Matt....what to say? You nail it with the awesome teaching style. When have a chance see if there a way to pair ultrasyncblue with iphone 15 pro max that I use for video recording. I do use blackmagic camera app which pair nicely with iphone 15, but blackmagic app refuses to talk with syncblue :). Pretty sure is a compatibility thing. For audio recording I am using 2 Tascam DL-10L Pro and Portacapture X8 as a back up, I could sync tascam products with ultra sync.... the video portion is what I need to sync too. Hopefully , I don't have to buy a camera :). Send me your thoughts. Note: Thank you for the cheat sheet, I am one of those that like to read (refresher) after a video.
Hello Mr. Matt, when all devices (audio, video and ultrasync blue) are conected and in sync (timecode timer is running and like in 1:30 minutes etc. Then I start to click the record button on all devices....so, if time code timer already started...how the audio and video catch each other even if timecode timer already started? Looking forward to hear from you. Thank You
Before anyone with a Nikon Z8 or Z9 runs out and buys two timecode devices, note that both cameras can receive timesync over Bluetooth directly from the Ultrasync Blue. Therefore, for example, a Nikon Z8/Z9 and a Zoom F2-BT, could both receive timesync from one Ultrasync Blue device over Bluetooth.
Actually, the Nikon Z8 doesn’t use the MB-10 grip. It uses the MB-12 grip. I’m not aware of, nor could I find references to any timecode restrictions when using the MB-12 grip. Nikon’s Z8 is a top professional video camera. It would be surprising if it restricted access to a key professional feature. :)
Hey Matt, thank you so much for the video! So I'm a fx30 user and I'm super new to timecode. I also has two DR10L-Pro and a 416 w Zoom F3, I want to sync up all my 4 devices at all times. Does that mean that I should have at least 3 ultra blue ones?
it's a bit of pain because if you don't use a camera with external timecode input, you can't use the mic of your camera anymore. But for you it works with this downside?
I would like to know how this works when: -You say are filming a wedding and you’re chopping up clips and using them here and there and everywhere on the time line. -when filming a wedding with multiple cameras and the cameras are in different locations throughout the day and together for parts of the day.
1. You group up synced video with synced audio clips so that no matter where you move them they stay in sync 2. The cameras can be across the world or on a moon and it would sync perfectly.
What Adam said. As long as you start the sync even if the timecode devices lose their wireless connection they will still hold time and reconnect when they get close again. You do have to consider there could be timecode drift where the audio and video could get out of sync by a second or two if the devices are disconnected for many hours.
@@lowerleftsideYes. Just sync everything at the beginning of the day and as long as your gear all stays relatively close together it should stayed synced. If you’re going for a super long day you may need to re-jam timecode part way through. But for a standard wedding I don’t think you’ll have much of a problem.
I don't get why Atomos didn't create a a UltraSync One with bluetooth and why Tascam choose this weird timecode format. Now I need two devices. Hell, create a cheaper Blue addon that converts the bluetooth to 3.5mm.
@@JonathanPajakLensCulture 2 cameras and 2 mics and 1 recorder and maybe 2 recorders if it’s a Catholic ceremony. So ya. But tbh it’s not hard to sync everything because I found a routine and I’m able to organize it in sync on my footage the night of the wedding before I go to bed so 🤷🏽♂️
This is overly complicated set up for simply jamming and syncing time code. Hope they come out with a more plug and play solution skipping all these set up steps when it only has 1 job
This product is expensive and inefficient.I hate it. I don't understand how Tascam didn't make their product with internal timecode. I bought the Portacapture X8 and it has been a headache for me.
