In this episode of In the Kitchen with Matt, I show you how to eat a Kiwano Melon and do a taste test. The Kiwano Melon also know as the Horned Melon, African Horned Cucumber, Jelly Melon, spiked melon and a few other names, is native to Africa. But is cultivated in other parts of the world like the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Italy, and others. It is quite interesting looking, like something you would find on another planet.
To eat it you just cut it in half and then scoop out the green jelly with a spoon. You can eat the soft white seeds, or spit them out. They are similar to cucumber seeds or the white soft watermelon seeds. They can be juiced, eaten as a snack, or in a salad.
There are many health benefits to the Kiwano or Horned melon such as:
- Variety of essential nutrients (protein, fat, vitamin C, A, B6, Magnesium, Iron, Phosphorus, Zinc Potassium, Calcium)
- low in calories, carbs, and fat. High in protein compared to other fruits.
- Antioxidant rich
- Promotes healthy red blood cell production
- Promotes blood sugar control
- Supports hydration
Health benefit information came from here: www.healthline.com/nutrition/...
What does a kiwano or horned melon taste like? It has a texture of jelly or like a passion fruit and tastes like a mix between passion fruit, cucumber, and lime. It is not very sweet at all.

Here in Africa, in Namibia, we have lots of them, they are all over in the wildness, they just grow by themselves we don't have to grow them and they are plenty. I collected them today because i wanted to collect seeds, i think dried and crushed seeds are good for my poultry. I just wanted to know how other people call this spiky melon...i came to learn that you call it Kiwano, i call it Manyose, thank you for the video

I bought one today. Mixed it in a blender together with half a lemon, some ginger, a shot of strawberry juice and lots of water. Extremely refreshing! Definitively an interesting fruit. Not that great by itself but excels as a small addition when mixed with other fruits. At least that goes for my taste preferences growing up in Germany.

For the first time I saw this fruit in local Supermarket in Singapore and costs S$7.95/piece, considered expensive fruit compared to other fruits for its size. I took it raw and the taste is not that great compared to other fruits but it has a very mild sour taste, each seed encapsulated on a jelly like flesh, greenish in colour. I put together with the seeds in my mouth and separated the seeds by squeezing the flesh in my mouth and spit the seeds out, the flesh is found to be bit crunchy and it got the raw smell of cucumber but don’t find banana flavour as what some posts say (maybe my senses are not that strong to find banana flavour). Overall I liked the fruit for its crunchy texture, mild sour taste and flavour. I had it in whole with the seeds and it just slipped easily through my throat, not difficult to swallow. Can try once for experience.

My grand-daughter, Cali and i grew these Jelly Melons here in Lexington, North Carolina. We got about 30, but it frosted early and so we had to pick them green. We got 1 that ripened on the vine, and it tasted just like you decribed it. She added a little sugar to the jelly and it was really good. It took a long time for the vine to mature and flower. It took off when it got really hot.

Another Method: I grew up eating these in Botswana and Zimbabwe. You can peel the skin off then cut it horizontally (rings) and then season it with Salt. This wakes up the flavor. You can season with salt and fresh chilli or just salt and pickled jalapenos. You can add to a salad if you dont wanna eat it alone. But on a personal note.. I would not eat it by scooping the seeds. I had one yesterday. I paid $2.50 for mine and it was citrusy and bitter. I don’t know if mine was ripe or not. The seeds were not soft and it was too hard to eat. I tried to eat it the jelly and the seeds but it was not worth it. I also tried to strain out the seeds and i didn’t get much juice at all from those efforts. Oh well.. I tried something new! Thanks for posting! :)

I'm in sub-tropical Australia. I let them grow crazy. I picked half a box in 1m2 so there are tonnes left, so I'm trying to work out what to do with them all? I didn't know they are a fruit, I was eating them green as a cucumber which is delicious! I can't believe you had to pay so much. I do find them selective where they'll set fruit though. They love to grow on a fence or trellis. I haven't yet searched an area where they are growing over other plants, the fruit may be hiding? These ones self seeded. They're vigorous growers! We had crazy rain though. Flowers and fruit-set didn't come until the rain slowed. OHHH, that's why the ones on other plants haven't fruited.. I've been throwing water over the area because the other plants are a huge variety of taro. Hmm.
