Life expectancy, quality of life and health-span are going down, and not because of Covid. We are witnessing an epidemic of chronic noncommunicable disease (CNDs) (such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke, fatty liver disease, cancer, dementia) as well as mental health issues (addiction, depression, anxiety) and autoimmune conditions which are increasing in prevalence and severity. These diseases of metabolic and mitochondrial dysfunction cannot be helped with a pill, but rather with food. But not just any #food. “Let food be thy medicine” is true only if it is the right food. The wrong food, however, will poison you over time.
Prof. Robert Lustig, paediatric neuro-endocrinologist and best-selling author of “Fat Chance”, advises us to take our health into our own hands in order to dodge the agendas of big food, big pharma, and to an extent, modern doctors who don’t have the time (nor often the knowledge) to teach us about prevention, lifestyle and the power of food to heal.
So how do we take our health into our own hands when there is so much conflicting and confusing information out there? And what should we eat, and should we supplement, given the various #diet trends (Keto, Vegan, Paleo, Mediterranean etc.) and advice on #nutrition and supplementation? And each person’s dietary and nutritional needs vary!
In this live streamed event in collaboration with the How To Academy, Prof. Lustig gives us some clear guidelines to follow for greater health, longevity and happiness.
Learn about:
- The eight subcellular pathologies that underlie all chronic conditions (glycation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, insulin resistance, membrane integrity, inflammation, epigenetics, autophagy) and how to make them work for you rather than against you
- How to protect your liver (from sugar and other nasties in processed foods which cause oxidative stress) and feed your gut (with fibre rich food which protects the microbiome and intestinal lining) by eating real food
- Which diet (keto, paleo, mediterranean, traditional Japanese, vegan, etc.) is best for your health, longevity and happiness (spoiler alert - it’s personal) and why the key is keeping your insulin low
- How chronically high insulin leads to mitochondrial dysfunction and chronic disease
- Why fructose rather than glucose is the enemy, and how it acts on the reward centre to foster addiction
- Why it’s not the food that you eat but what’s been done to the food that you eat that matters, and how we can process our own food (through juicing or grilling for instance) to make it less healthy
- How and when intermittent fasting and probiotics work for our health
- Why dairy is actually good for you, and what to do if you are intolerant
- Why grass-fed meat is so much better for our health and for the planet

My French immigrant friend got very sick and finally agreed to see my alternative health care person. After months of suffering, she cured in one session: told him he’s allergic to wheat and gave him some Standard Process vitamins. Instantly, he got better. He stopped eating wheat, but only in the US. When he returns to France, he has no wheat allergic. It’s our American wheat, poisoned by glyphosate and such.

Regarding the teens wanting sugar - you can feed your children healthy food and upon teenage hood they end up with more freedom in every area including food, then they have to discover for themselves what you already taught them and they do. As for getting off sugar it’s possible to learn what foods are bad for you and stop eating them. Took me decades😆. A simpler way would be great. I only learned about insulin in last half of life. Thanks to great educators like Dr Lustig

I didn't enjoy the interviewer referring to intermittent fasting as a food fad. That had to be the worst moment in the video. It isn't a fad, intermittent fasting allows our insulin to drop. It is the furthest thing from a fad possible. I almost turned the rest of the video off at that point. If it hadn't been Dr Lustig speaking I would have. Autophagy is very important. Dr Lustig said it is possible to have autophagy occur in the absence of intermittent fasting, unfortunately he is not entirely accurate with that. Autophagy happens in the absence of nutrients. You have to stop eating to allow autophagy to occur. Even if you are eating a great diet it is still beneficial for the vast majority of us to have a period of time in the day when we are not eating. Obviously this does not apply to pregnant women, people who are undernourished and growing children and teens who need to eat. But for the vast majority of us who are overfed and undernourished? Absolutely intermittent fast. Calling intermittent fasting a fad irritated me because it is bad information and can potentially harm people watching this video who assume that the interviewer is knowledgeable and that the things she says are reliable and good information. Calling it a fad is disparaging. Eating 10 grapefruits a day is a fad diet. Intermittent fasting is what humans have evolved to do. It would be good if she understood the difference between fad and science. Asking questions as to whether grass-fed dairy and beef is better, how is that even a question? Of course grass-fed beef is better. Of course grass-fed dairy is better. Of course pasture raised eggs are better. Again, a basic understanding of the science should be required of an interviewer. Please do better in the future.

When I have no time or money to eat, I just fast and feel much better afterwards. The best thing when eating correct things and fasting is that it clears the mind, now taking own decisions, easier to say NO, thinking about several things at the same time qualitatively and with nuances, while walking and enjoying the scenery. The mind opens, because all the small capillaries are now flowing. It is not 110% it's brain = 200%. Fact checked on myself.

PLEASE HELP I have a little girl whose got Cysitic Fibrosis- at almost 2 years old and after priceless information from a very close & valued friend I started her on low carb low sugar non processed food minimal Vegetable fats. High protein high animal fats everything is being cooked from scratch- making sure her diet is highly bio-available. Since making this change I’ve seen a massive reduction in her symptoms and she’s passing normal stools (ie not even a normal for CF stool- a normal person type stool), as well improvement in activity levels and cognitive function. Because her weight again is slow is but she cognitively very switched on (when she’s not had carbs) they want me to increase her carb load by 150% despite me showing them evidence of how it her effects her stomach with bloating, her breathing and her activity levels. I’m a paediatric nurse myself so I have good working knowledge of A&P so I understand the nature of videos like this very well. All my team want to do is subject her to food trials, further testing, and the biggest problem increasing her carb load. They don’t seem to be interested how much better her physiological symptoms of her condition are when she’s on a low carb And she suffers with raised liver enzymes. Please help- I’m worried I’m going to be accused of neglecting my girl when I’ve seen how much more improved she is on a low carb/sugar high fat diet.

It's interesting that you found the presenter charming. I did initially and then increasingly found her irritating. Referring to intermittent fasting as a fad? That ruined it for me. Asking questions as to whether grass-fed beef and dairy are better? I assumed that a basis of understanding would be required in an interviewer. When she called intermittent fasting a fad she essentially gave permission to others watching the video to assume that she is correct. She isn't. She did a similar thing with gluten-free. I'm not gluten sensitive but many are including Dr Lustig. She has this condescending snickering affect when she talks about things she doesn't understand and asks questions that she should already know the answers to.

American steers grass-feed for 1000 days then go to a feed lot for six weeks, which is an open-air compound. They do not get antibiotics until they go to the feed lot. This information is available all over, including USDA publications that get sent out to ranchers. I live in ranch country and can see cows grazing out my window, and I've met ranchers, who care a lot about their animals. The reason the ranchers do the feed lot finish is they can pack on 500 pounds to each three-year-old cow, and that means they can feed their own families because 500 pounds per steer adds up to sufficient income to pay the mortgage. If the cows were grass finished, we'd be paying $20/pound for burger. I love Lustig, but he has that totally wrong. Test: if you're american, have you ever seen cows in the field, grazing? Then clearly, they don't grow up in factories, do they?

I know many animal farmers, including my uncle, that raise them CAFO for convenience of space and cost. It certainly isn't as healthy, you're right. We have signs all over the Midwest protesting CAFOs, yet obviously those are cheaper per pound to eat, for good reason... Less healthy. It's hard to want to spend $20/lb right?

Im really surprised she said real food is more expensive than processed sht. I thought that was well debunked a while ago
@elizabethfletcher1487
@elizabethfletcher1487 Год назад
Processed food certainly looks cheaper in the short run. Easy to see that cheap American ramen noodles will fill you up and delight your taste buds on pennies versus the cost of one serving of fresh chard, which is twice that of the noodles. The economy of good food vs processed foods only works out in the long-term mathematical voodoo of including resultant health or lack thereof and the high medical costs or no lack thereof. I assume all countries with national health care are getting on top of this to help cut back on the need for more and more taxes to fund the processed food slow death spiral. We Americans, with no such health care system, prefer to have the right to run our economy into the dirt by first subsidizing sugar and corn and then subsidizing state and federal medical aid to those who cannot use a huge chunk of their income for health insurance. This helps out the poorer people who only care about what to eat TODAY. Both of those categories of subsidization require taxes to be high enough to cover them, so, taxes the poor cannot and do not, for the most part, pay, taxes that the wealthier members of our great republic seem to be happy to pay, at least for sugar and corn, without much complaint just keep on getting higher. You would think that we Americans would be raising hell to stop subsidizing that sugar and corn on the front end of the economical equation so that the money being paid out to cover the health care needs caused by them would go away on the back end of that equation. But NOOOO. We Americans preserve the right to kill ourselves slowly (so it really does not look like suicide) and then snivel like hell when the medical costs interfere with just about everything that makes life worth living. I could make the point that a poor person would pay out far less dollars for whole grain groats and dry beans than they do for the processed foods. Years ago, when my mother was getting welfare food after my father was hospitalized for schizophrenia, I remember her, frustrated at all the beans being thrown our way since she could not afford to cook anything as long as beans take. Luckily, we had a pressure cooker from better days. That helped a lot, but food you could eat without so much cooking would have been much better, Like canned beans. What does it take to cook groats? Half the time in a pressure cooker, but an hour on the stove. Many poor people have no utilities and cannot cook. It should be no mystery why peanut butter and jelly white bread sandwiches were and are a staple. Peanut butter is too expensive now so poor people have to eat some processed mess weirdly labeled as peanut butter paired up with high fructose corn syrup jam on their white bread, which is now disguised as whole wheat. Or, they can buy ramen that does not require cooking at all (it is really crunchy). Let us not even go into the problem of people who do have money and just chose to eat incredibly tasty food that will kill them slowly and drive up health care costs, since, heck, that is tomorrow’s issue, not today’s pleasure.

I am curious as to why the health insurance companies continue to pay out for all these claims that are essentially caused by sugar and the food industry. Do the health insurance companies some how make money off of this visous circle of death? I would figure they do somehow otherwise they would not continue to pay out all these high dollar claims !!! And I would bet they have the money and power to fight these industries if they wanted to!!!!

Turns out... this guy is a damn genius. Looking fwd to reading his book. So how do you cook things? Extra virgian olive oil? Lower heat? And some foods are easier to digest when cooked obviously ..like...broccoli! Oh and cooking helps get rid of lectins in veggies. What is the best way to cook fish? Baking? Many studies have exposed olive oil to high heat for long periods of time. Even under such extreme conditions, the olive oil does not form significant amounts of harmful compounds. Some studies use it for 8 hours whixh is a bit extreme and bogus.
