I pulled my chest muscles during a particularly bad coughing fit and have been in pain for a day before I found this. It's not completely gone but it's significantly eased. Thank you, I am now subscribed.
This is really great. I'm 24 and am a beginner weight lifter. I tore my chest muscle, according to my nurse and she recommended me this video. Thank you.
Yes. So Giselle did you notice with said muscle tear that it felt like a squeezing sensation in your chest. Then as your anxiety increased did it also seem like the muscle hurt more from the anxiety?
Eric Roberts I have this going on right now, it does increase with thoughts about it. I’m sure it’s anxiety but I don’t want to cross out heart disease. I’m 21 and relatively healthy
@@gamemuch4936 Happened to me yesterday right after stretching too hard before getting out of bed. I felt sore under my armpit are then started feeling random sharp throbs under my chest. The anxiety comes because we don't expect pain to come sporadicallyl from an area right over our heart. You feel helpless and think heart problem. It will go away, just don't overexert. Massage the area and breath slowly from your chest, through your nose and not your mouth. The random pain stopped when my underarm area felt better so it can't be a coincidence. If it comes back then I'll be seeing a doctor just to be on the safe side.
I’m going to consistently try this exercise. I have an irritated muscle that gets sore when I twist it/limited mobility. This exercise masked the pain which I think is a good sign. So, I’m going to keep trying this exercise, thanks.
TWO FINGERS OR THREE FINGERS. DO YOU FEEL THAT BRAD? All seriousness thanks for the video. I have been hurting for several months and this is really helping me. Thanks guys.
Thank you for sharing this information. The tightness by chest muscle tendon was experiencing a lot of inflammation, triggering my anxiety attacks. This is a life saver.
@@waelmarthi3393 did this video a while back. Just pulled pec again benching...I will start very light cable fly’s next week for sets of 20-30. Week after I will prexhuast high rep fly’s with very light bench press and continue pre exhaustion for a month or so because it REALLY helps with bench press comfort
49 yr. old man here--As recently as October, I bench pressed over 300lbs. in competition. Sometime around the New Year, I woke up with numbness in my index finger and trigger points in my right upper lat, rear deltoid and pec. It seems as if they move on me and I am improving very slowly but surely. I cannot even warm-up on bench press, much less go heavy. I can squat and deadlift with no problems at all. Great video! Any more tips/advice from anyone who has experienced this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you,
I'm a pre-PT student and weight training enthusiast who, well, we know it was my own mistake that brought me here (benching without enough warm up). Thanks Doctors, for your work and help..
yeah i tried benching without enough warm up and without good form, it felt like i couldn’t pick up my arm for a few hours but a day later no bruising with slight swelling and i have full range of motion but slight soreness/tightness if i stretch my arm too much
Strained my chest doing push ups lmao. Took 2 days rest and some ice. Started massaging and doing rom exercises all day. Began doing push ups on my knees day 3. And then I was back to normal in about two weeks. Make sure to do that massage it really helps early on to make the healing process faster.
Is it possible to strain both at the same time cuz I think I sprained it whilst doing push ups but there was no pain when I was doing them, it just occurred after like a few hours
I recently started feeling discomfort in the exact same spot by my armpit and it effected my chest and made my arms feel numb and weird for some reason. I’m definitely going to give this a try!!
You guys are pretty goofy, but I appreciate the information you posted about a torn pec muscle. I injured my right side after a particularly strenuous pull-up workout and, like Bob, I keep re-injuring it. The massaging technique will certainly help the healing process. Thanks again.
Thanks a lot guys. I've been doing the massage with Penetrex cream. I also try to ice my chest 3-4 times a day. I have been doing the stronglifts 5x5 program for two months now. The other day, during the bench press workout, my right chest just sort of crumpled while doing my second set (thank heavens for the cage!). The weird thing is that I don't see any bruising on my chest, but I do see a dark bruise on my right bicep. There's no pain whatsoever on my bicep or anywhere on my arm. But doing this message with icing, advil and ibuprofen has made a marked difference.
Hello! Great stuff! I've been dealing with chest problems for the past few years now and like you described with your own chest injury, it has continued to flare up. Is there a way I can give myself the massage you demonstrated? And how important is the exact motion of the massage?
I just did it doing close grip bench press. My chest is swollen bruised heavy by the upper corner at delta. Pain is complete side of pec , under pec and across top by collar bone. I definitely felt the electrifying feeling and burn.Should I avoid training altogether and for how long, or can I train around the injury? Thank you Brian
I strained my Pec major on the second set of bench press a few days ago. I can feel it slightly in the sternal head of the pec as well as at the insertion point on the humerus. Its almost like a straight line across. The pain is not unbearable but I am afraid of potentially rupturing it at the insertion site because of where the pain is located. What exercises should I avoid until it feels better and when should I start stretching it?
Hey guys, thanks for the great video! I got a chest strain about 5 months ago and it's only gone down in pain by around 15% since then, even though I've stopped ALL upper body training.. I think it's because my job requires me to write constantly which is pretty painful. Should it really take this long? I'm kind of worried it could require surgery of sorts.. Massaging like this seems to help but not significantly (and I've been doing it for weeks!)
@@davidmarkeilov472 It's crazy timing for you to ask (my comment was 4 years ago) because it did... but then I strained it again about 2 weeks ago! Eventually it did go away though but it would both me every now and again, there was obviously a lot of scar tissue and it was never 100% back to the way it was, but I was doing upper body exercises again (very minimal chest). But I guess it repaired weaker than I thought, because I pulled it again doing push ups, and now it hurts like it did before.
@@Cassie12348 did the pulled chest muscle feel like a heart attack bro its cuz i was skating and all of a sudden my chest started hurting from the left and its been a week now and it doesnt really hurt but i feel something irritating in my chest.
@@Bankrigged_ Not exactly! For me it was a sudden sprain feeling when I was doing the push up, like I could feel a pain in the muscle suddenly. It didn't hurt too bad when it happened, but then afterwards it felt very warm and a bit tingly in the location of the sprain, and more pain came on later. But it wasn't a general chest pain - it was localized to the part of the muscle where it happened.
Thank you so very much, the doctor showed me quickly one stretch to do but I forgot and this video gave me the tools I need to take care of this pain. It's bothering me day and night.
How long does it take o heal? I am pretty sure this happened to me when I wasn't properly warmed up :( I didn't feel it when it happened. But a day later I had some pain.
@@LucianoClassicalGuitar that's great, I think I pulled a muscle while lifting only, but felt the pain a day later like you. I'll be visiting a doctor to be sure. Did you stop your workouts?
hi guys! Is it possible that the injury in the pectoral muscle causes also light palpitations and feeling of weakness in the shoulder area? I am wondering whether is my heart but I have some hurting spots in my pectoral muscle. thanks
I think I tore or strained my right pec after doing upper body workouts. There was no big single traumatic event, but I just felt sore after I finished. A day later (today) I started doing pushups and found I could do about half of what I usually rep. After I did as many as I could there was a sharp pain in my right pec. I can stretch it horizontally without pain but raising my arm vertically hurts as well as rotating internally. Should I see a physician or just rest it for a while? Thanks for the video too.
@@umuteyasar Eventually I did recover alone without seeing a physician. This was during a time I was really trying to push my 1 rep max on bench and was hitting chest 3x a week. Granted I was a teenager and I felt I could handle to load but it became too much. Adequate rest got me back to where I was
I was doing push ups as conditioning for my boxing practice and I was sore from the day before, once I tried to do it I got about 2 push ups done and then instant pain on my chest towards my shoulder. (kinda like where an undershirt strap would sit) and im scared I pulled something or tore something. I just know there's something wrong. :(
How long has this lasted for any of you guys? I’ve had what I’m sure is a strained / pulled chest muscle for just over a month, they say it can heal quicker for others or stays longer for others
Yep, exactly me. Got a bad strain/pull while doing shrugs with heavy weight, the pain has gone done but it's still there and makes itself noticable when doing some excersises.
Hey there! Great video, I just subscribed! I have injured myself slightly while deadlifting a few weeks ago, and I think it's a minor pec strain. it's located in the top outer part of my chest (left side) and although there is no pain, the pain comes back if I deadlift (basically the heavy weight that keep tensions down my arms and therefore pulling the chest) but the funny thing is that it does hurt nor it's uncomfortable while bench pressing or cable flyes. Why do you think this is or what do you think it could be if not pec strain? would appreciate your help.
My left pec major tore in 2001. I shoved a large guy hard against a truck. I heard crushed cereal at least twice, then walked away. The tearing didn't hurt yet. Within 20 minutes, I couldn't raise my arm without pain. I went home and carefully removed my shirt and manually lifted my arm. I saw a purple clot the size of a silver dollar. I applied ice and rest. A few days later, it drained. My chest turned purple, brown, green in some areas and it drained down my left arm. It was a difficult transition, having to reduce my weights in half. 3 years later, I got an MRI to see what happened and if there was anything that could be done. My pec major was torn straight the belly. I still have the sternal and clavicular heads. That left front deltoid grows a lot more than my right, to help compensate for the loss. For the last year or so, I used Painless pumps to help fill in the depression and it does a good job. I have to make sure I pull back and there is no blood. I have to refill my oil implant every 2-3 weeks. I did notice there was less pull on the left front delt. 11 months ago, I tore my triceps longhead. Again, I heard that crushed cereal sound. I may have close to 50% strength in the back of my arm. I don't know if it will come back or not, but I will continue my therapy. Some tears heal all the way and some don't. I tore my left triceps after my chest injury and it came back. I had a .45 bullet pass through my right triceps and it came back. I tore both quads and they returned. It all depends on how much. If it's less than 25%, you'll probably get most or all strength back with time and work. If you try to work too heavy, you risk tearing something else. There will be exercises you use to do but can't anyone. Have to event new ones that don't hurt. As for my chest, I was hoping my tendon came off the bone and it could be reattached, but that didn't happen. A good orthopedic will tell you you can't sew muscle to itself there. A sneeze could pull the stitches loose. Like the guy stated in the video above, where it tears, scarred tissue will form and attach to either side, but it breaks. Mine broke when I was doing decline dumbbell chest press, then my left triceps made that awful crushed cereal sound. I've never had an injury from the gym that I didn't fully recover from. The bad ones seem to happen outside. I have have been doing this tissue rub. I watched this video a while back after my arm injury. My dead tissue is near my elbow. It has reduced since. I just practiced this on my chest, an old injury, where the tissue draws towards the sternum and it seems to help it relax, not pull as much. I don't know if this was relevant, but both my left chest and right triceps use to be my dominate muscle groups.
I’m recovering from pneumonia, and I tore the muscles in my chest and some in my back near the shoulder blade that I can’t reach. This massage actually helped a lot with my chest pain.
I was bench pressing today and heard a terrible sound from my chest. It is very sore, and I cannot even do a push up. I believe I tore the muscle you guys are talking about. When should I begin doing this kind of treatment?
Hey guys nice video, my outer upper right pec hurts enough to keep me from going really heavy. My right shoulder was popped alot from when I played football so that might be why. Any ideas on how to strengthen and gain flexibility in my right shoulder?
i injured my anterior sternum while working out, now when i wide open my arms or lift anything over head or push down my hand against any rigid object while sitting straight, i feel pain on the right upper chest and interior lining of the chest. please suggest what to do?
I injured my right pectoral muscle with pushups. Can you please tell me the best sleeping position (& if I need a pillow under my arm or back) so this can heal? When I first wake up it's like I injured it all over again and it's the most painful in the mornings, so I know I'm sleeping wrong. Your massage and stretch techniques really help, but then I wake up in pain. Please help. Thanks!
Over the past couple of weeks there's been discomfort near the end of my right pec leading towards my armpit. It's still there and not really going away after not working out my chest the last two or three upper body workouts. I've benched 340 a little over a month ago, and since the discomfort started, I still did 315 for a few reps and 225 for I think 14 reps. The point being is, I still have full function but I very much feel discomfort and can tell I should stop working out my chest. I would think this would be a light strain. I'm getting it checked out on Thursday. Because I am able to hit my normal weight, would you say doing these massages and exercises would suffice if I don't target my chest for the next few weeks?
I guess you figured it out by now that you weren't giving it enough time to heal. When I was 20, I strained my shoulder, couldn't do anything in upper body without pain. Well, I went to a place for 3 months that didn't have a gym. I had to invent exercises with construction stones pillowcases, hand grippers, and cable wire. I didn't know it was flat bench press that gave me the injury and prevented me from getting better until I returned home. I use to bounce a little off my chest. After 3 months, I was healed and I redid all my chest exercises and concentrated on perfect form. I wasn't concerned with the weight I could use, I just wanted to grow. Of course, we're able to use more weight when we grow. You rarely see any pro or good bodybuilders do flat bench. They grow the most with incline and dumbbells.
If its in your armpit, its a tendon strain not a muscle strain. Takes longer to recover and you should not train. I have the exact same problem now after benching.
@@Rk88874 I have the same pain and I think I got that by doing heavy dumbbell incline Flys... It's been like a month now the discomfort feels when working chest... My question is how long did it took to you to get fully recovered? And what is the solution?
Thank you for this video. It was really helpful. I'm 22 years old. About 4 months ago, while practising handstands I damaged this muscle. Up to now, I still feel some slight pain and discomfort close to my armpit, and stretching to the front of my shoulder. The injury never got a chance to heal because I am enrolled in dance school and was always using my arm...I would ice my shoulder quite regularly though. Now that school is out, I really want to get over this injury once and for all. I'm definitely going to do the massage and stretch every day. But do you recommend that I totally rest? I usually work out on my own (jump-rope for cardio and self weights like pull ups, squats etc) and I don't want to lose my fitness level, but at the same time if it's necessary to heal my shoulder I will do it. Or can I continue working out and just massage?
GREAT video! i was using the row machine on sunday evening and a bunch of other arm lifting exercises, thursday i noticed i had a pain in that EXACT spot. i was lifting pretty hard and it comes and goes . its about two inches over from where my arm connects to my torso and about a half inch- 1 inch down, my right side doesnt really hurt unless i make a muscle then it hurts a little. i was worried it was something to do with my heart! ( i dont have any chest pain in my lower chest, just up in this one spot) i had a physical last month and BP and sugar was good , so im assuming thats not it. any thoughts guys ? is there any for sure way to tell if its a muscle or not? if i take my left arm (the one arm with the issue) and life it up and rest it on my stomach and put my left hand on my right shoulder, the pain goes away, but when i put it down at my side , thats when it hurts, if that helps. thanks!
Thanks for the video! Strained my chest muscle two days ago rock climbing. It's still a bit sore to the touch (mostly near the armpit), but the pain has reduced significantly. When should I begin massaging and stretching during the healing process? So far, I've been trying to just rest and ice as much as possible. Also, any advice on how long to wait before lap swimming, or how should my muscle feel before swimming again?
Im an powerlifter that trains with weights for atleast 5 years. Before that i was professional rower and i never had problems with any muscle or tendon. Recently i started to feel some light pain just above my left armpit while doing any pressing movement but it goes away almost fully during benching. Im not sure if its the tendon or muscle that hurts but im afraid its going to get worse. Does this massage applies for both muscle and pectoralis tendon?
hello, I've been having a muscle strain in my sternum area for over a year, would this work? what other things i could do if this doesn't work? thank you
Hey, I've a minor tear in my left pectoralis I think. It isnt severe. It's exactly in the corner. It feels like i can do pushups, and almost even bench press. Only incline DB chest presses are a no go. It seems like when theres not a big strerch its duable, like close grip presses, pushups, dips and landmine chest presses. I wanr to get back to training asap. I'll do the massage a lot and ice it to improve recovery. Any other tips or advice? It doesnt hurt i daily activities it only feels a little vulnerable or irritating sometimes. Thanks! Great video! I subscribed.
***** Thank you for your respond! I've been doing what you've shown in this video and it has healed fully now. But everything is good now, thanks for everything! keep up the great videos, very helpful!

Hi. Yoi post this video long time ago but I hope you will answer me. I had a partial rupture on my chest during bench press and now, after 3 weeks i have a strong tension between biceps and chest. I have even pain on biceps side during some moves. I'm on the vessel so i didn't visit doctor yet. I'm interested what os your opinion on that? That part wich os in tension, tetive, will it become more loss or it will be needed surgery? Thanks for answer
my chest was having sharp pain which goes away completely the same day near middle of my left chest, i got it checked and found that i have muscle pull/strain and i need to take a break from chest exercises for a week or 1 also while stretching and slowly making my way back into chest exercises again but it can occur again in future even after healing completely due to strain mark it will leave there.

I believe I may have strained my left pec. My symptoms are a dull pain, a pinching pain, as well as burning sensation. Just wondering if that is normal for such an injury.
Very informative. About 5 Months ago I "strained" , "pulled" or outright -tore- the muscle fibers near my Clavicle(sternocostal?). I initially had a Dip in that area of the chest. I went and seen my primary care Doctor and they told me I probably strained the fibers and prescribed muscle relaxers. The initial onset of an extreme "choking" feeling on the same right side has receded slightly, but has not gone. It feels "tight" , Thus the feeling of being "Strangled". And when at rest (Sleeping) the pain subsides. Will this ever Heal? Will the devit point fill itself in, at least some what? Do I do more harm in stretching/working the area? Should I cease upper body workouts completely? I go VERY light as it is(15-20lb). On top of that I now have other muscular problems, mainly in the left front side of my Ribs. As if the cartilage is being "pulled" apart. You two are VERY knowledgeable, and if possible I'd appreciate it Very much If You Could Comment back. Thank you in advance, you earned a longterm subscriber!
***** I have found such spots, and have been seeing a Chiropractor which has helped. I also have checked that video out, which leads me to believe I very well may have such a problem on that end. I'm at the end of my leash it seems, I can't handle the pain much longer. I don't want to be around if I have to deal with this constant pain. Doctors keep brushing me off and prescribing meds, I'll have to look into being seen elsewhere. Thank you for the quick reply!! Much much much appreciated!

Back in December I tore my chest and a slight tear of the labrum. MRI only picked up on the labrum tear so I got surgery for that and I'm currently doing physical therapy for it, so I didn't know it was a pec tear until recently. When i lift my arms to my side sticking straight out ,and have them parallel, the outer part of the chest that connects to the front delt/ armpit area is sunk in. Could I rehab that or would you think surgery would be better? thanks for any help!
I figured that. Thanks. been dealing with it for two weeks now. It got better then I reached over across my body to get my coffee and bam again pulled it. I will give the massage a go.
20 Year old male here. Around 3 months ago I strained my chest muscle either playing hockey or lifting... I have not lifted chest since but have played hockey here and there. I notice pain in the pectoral muscle, more inward and further from the shoulder than you have shown in your diagram, when doing activities ranging from getting out of bed to doing crunches. Do you have a list of exercises I should / should not be doing in order to recover, ie back, squats, biceps? Thanks, Matt
I had a second degree chest muscle strain during bench press. I relaxed for about 30 days but it did not go away. So i started deep massage with a physiotherapist. I have done until now 2 massage sessions. At the second session the massage was very painful. Is it normal to feel such pain during the massage? Or must i stop? I have a third session in 2 days and i have arranged for 10 massage sessions.
Can lifting my 37-1/2 pound 2-1/2 year old tear/strain my pectoralis? Hello all I need help if possible, in the last three weeks or so I have developed a severe pain in my right side chest muscle that really is not an issue at work during the day but at night when I roll over during sleep it actually makes me yell out in pain. Also if i'm laying down and use my left elbow to raise up with the pain that it creates on my right side outer muscle? of the chest is some of the worst I have ever experienced. I recently had lab work done and the notes from the Doc said great job keep up the diet and exercise so i'm sure its not my ticker. I have a fairly physical job where I lift 50 pounds many times throughout the day and nothing that I have done at work has caused me any discomfort. I'm 54 with no medical conditions but I am about 30 pounds over where I should be and fairly agile for a fat boy, thanks for any input and have a great day.
