Dean Sluyter (pronounced “slighter”) has taught natural methods of meditation, anxiety tools, and awakening since 1970. His five highly acclaimed books include Natural Meditation (Amazon's #1 stress management bestseller and Nautilus Gold Medal winner for best mind-body-spirit book) and Fear Less: Living Beyond Fear, Anxiety, Anger, and Addiction. Dean gives talks, workshops, and retreats throughout the United States and beyond, from Ivy League colleges to maximum-security prisons. His media appearances have included National Public Radio, The New York Times, New York Magazine, Coast to Coast AM, The Dr. Oz Show, and O, The Oprah Magazine.
A grateful student of Eastern and Western sages in several traditions, Dean has completed numerous pilgrimages and retreats in India, Tibet, Nepal, and the West. He is known for conveying authentic teachings in forms that are relaxed, accessible, and down-to-earth. When not writing or teaching, he narrates audiobooks, administers the Awakening Prison Art project, makes music, and happily tools around town on his Vespa.
Born into a family of musicians and political activists, Dean grew up in New York and Los Angeles. He dropped out of college to hitchhike around the country and embark on a path of spiritual investigation, eventually returning to earn a B.A. in English and an M.A. in interdisciplinary education.
Dean lived in New Jersey for 33 years, where he was married to the late artist and teacher Maggy Sluyter, with whom he raised two children. There he taught English and developed classroom meditation programs at The Pingry School, and worked with inmates at Northern State Prison. He now lives in Santa Monica, California, where he leads meditation sessions regularly and is on the faculty of the West Coast Writers Conferences. He is married to documentary filmmaker Yaffa Lerea.
Please enjoy my conversation with Dean Sluyter.

I also first experienced meditation while in a Catholic school in 5th grade at 11 in 1977. Our math teacher was a nun who began every class with a guided fluid meditation. That was probably the best year I ever had in school, it was so fun packed and I felt my best with participation and a sense of belonging. Meditation should be taught in every school and “they” know that, the science has proven the benefits for many years now.

Thanks for the responses! I didn’t mean to hit send yet. Apparently it was meant to be! I loved this podcast! I love that the more I watch Alex the more I feel like I know him. It’s so beautifully obvious when Alex is having fun!! I love hearing his laugh. I think his voice is very soothing. I’m curious if anyone knows how one goes about finding a teacher, a Guide to learn a lot from? I don’t know of any Monks or even any spiritual meetups anywhere near by in Connecticut. Anyone from Connecticut that watches Alex’s podcasts? I am looking for some spiritual friends who can live anywhere. I would like to add you as a friend because I’m so curious to see what people post about. Anyways, I feel like these 2 could talk for several hours! Great stuff once again! ❤❤🙏🙏✌🏻✌🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻

I was raised poor and I went through the desire thing where I thought things would keep me happy. Now that I'm older and have enough money to where I'm comfortable I've come to realize money doesn't make you happy. Money makes life easier and convenient. I can say being poor does suck. It's very inconvenient.

Many years ago I read Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind by Shunryu Suzuki and TRIED to meditate the way he described in the book. I remember being extremely uncomfortable sitting in the lotus position, but I thought that all of the discomfort would go away once I'd reach the appropriate trance state. No, for some reason the lotus position just didn't work for me. Neither did concentrating on breathing in a particular way. What finally got me into a blissful state was a single sentence I happened to read about a type of meditation from India (not sure if it was Buddhist or Hindu). All it said was, "Let the Universe breathe you." For some reason that made sense to me, so I tried it, just sitting on a couch or chair. I closed my eyes and let my lungs relax, not TRYING to breathe, but waiting to see if the universe would breathe me. After a few seconds, my lungs filled up on their own and exhaled on their own. I allowed that to happen for a while and suddenly had the sense that I had nothing to do with my own breathing, that it really was all coming from "the universe" or God. And with that feeling, I also felt connected to everything! Long story short, I continued to do that kind of meditation for a few months, sometimes reaching that same point, sometimes not. And then I allowed life, chaos and distraction to get in the way--for several decades--and my meditation practice fell by the wayside. In the last year I felt the need to get back into meditation, and again started learning about different practices. The "letting the universe breathe me" technique was in the back of my mind, but for some reason I kept thinking I'd discover a better, more "official" way to meditate. Again, nothing seemed to work...until I watched this video. 🤠 Within the first 16 minutes of it, while listening to the discussion about the monkey mind myth, I found myself allowing the universe to breathe me and felt my whole body and mind relax in a profound way. And I didn't even have my eyes closed. Thank you for this great interview!

Maybe a tiny bit of synchronicity, lol: I wrote the above comment about 16 minutes into the interview. Later on in the interview, Dean said, "Zen mind is the beginner's mind." It caught my attention, not only because I mentioned the Suzuki book in my comment, but because I hadn't thought of that book or heard it mentioned in several decades. 🤔

The emotions we feel are what we experience and not our identity. Love it. I love your analogies. If the shark's hunger is representative of the hunger to Awakening or enlightenment, then man trying to kill the shark could be symbolic of religion's attempt to kill truth. Great episode!!!
