How To Eliminate Tension When You Play Guitar

Every time you try to play faster on your guitar your hands get 'tense' and the more you push the worse it gets?
That is a very common situation for guitar players... and as you are probably painfully aware of, this tension makes it harder for you to play fast. So you try harder and push for speed, which in turn causes more tension, and the net result is that you are not able to play fast at all!
Of course the way to resolve excess tension is to relax it (thank you Captain Obvious!) But how can you relax your hands when your hands automatically get tense whenever you play faster? It's not like you have any control on it.
Better yet, how can you completely prevent this tension?
Well, I'm not going to say that it's going to be easy or that it will take only few minutes. But if you know the right exercises, it is completely possible to eliminate all excess tension - and it will not take years.
If you want to learn how to train your hands so that they will stay relaxed even when you play fast, watch this video.

I never thought about this, certainly going to give it a whirl. Five minutes of my practice time is easy to add

So you are trying to train your brain to associate a v relaxed state with a certain movement, that ultimately you would like to perform very rapidly. And a relaxed state maximizes the likelihood that you will be able to achieve it

Tommaso can you please advice about the correct body and hand position when paying the guitar?
@friwette

A sure rhing is you have to have a straight and decontract back and hand. Your instrument have to come close to your body and not the oppposite

And again a great advice/lesson. Thank you. I just wonder what to do after the 4 notes or just stick to these four notes.

There are many possible approaches here. A good idea is to take the next 4 notes in the scale, and do the same.

Thanks for the awesome video! But I have a quick question- did you choose the up-down-up-up pick strokes on purpose, or was it random? The upstroke is actually more of an unnatural movement than the down, so I thought maybe that causes more tension and that was the reason you chose it.

It's easy, you just turn your machine heads anti-clockwise until the strings are about to fall off. No tension!
