Excellent and specific content. I understand that have done more of these, but this one is my first viewing. Please consider editing and then including a downloadable transcript. Your speaking voice is pleasant and friendly, but you are really FAST. Some of your audience might be first generation college-age students, and others speakers of other languages. A downloadable transcript will help. There is, too, an argument to use slight pauses to allow for processing and/or note-taking. Your tone of voice and general approach is friendly and not "preachy," so IMHO, adding a few minutes to the video would be well-within attention spans.
I have my scripts that I work from that I can send anyone if they want it. I just don’t upload them anywhere in particular (could upload them on my website, but they won't fit in the video description textual real estate). I basically try to script, record, edit, photoshop, and uploaded content weekly for my students + this sort of extra content when I can fit it in. I do speak fast. It’s my natural speaking voice/speed. I speak slower when teaching F2F and at conferences and whatnot, but not on RU-vid/TikTok given the aesthetic for fast-paced content, with jump cuts galore. There are a few options that help on YT too. One can click the gear icon to adjust the playback speed from “normal” down to .75, .50, and .25 (it lowers the pitch, but it’s super handy). On top of that, you can click the CC button to the left of the gear icon and that’ll superimpose closed captioning. It’s auto-generated and it’s remarkably good. Great video. One suggestion - I think it's too long for online attention spans. Would love to see shorter version. True story, too - I once received a student email with just "???" and it was not in reply to an Announcement, email, etc. Just "???" I'm a university instructor.
Fair enough. I usually cut content down (where I can) to drop onto TiKTok. I have to shift it to 9X16 though, so sometimes it's not worth the effort of re-editing all of the animations and what not (especially with grading/etc.). I've never gotten an email of just ???....But I did once receive an email with an opening that read: "Sup,"
Is there a reason "great" ("grate?") is spelled wrong in the word flyby? Is that supposed to just be funny, or is it an actual mistake? Honest question. Maybe this is a thing in these videos.
I generally love your videos. (The one about course evals is 👌.) But, I have a problem with this one. Around 2:06, you use the pronoun ‘him’ to describe the email recipient, thus reinforcing the perception that all professors, bosses, or humans worthy of being addressed respectfully are male.
If I weren't in Maine (drove up here to see my GF's family for the holidays), I would have probably overdubbed that line. It was bothering me too. I do actually say “them” at 2:06 rather that “him” there. If you hit the CC button, it transcribes the speech as "them." Here's a section from the script: “So if you take nothing else from this video, I want you to remember this: when you’re emailing a professor or a boss, especially if you don’t already have a working relationship with them, imagine that every communication you have with them has a formality scale or slider...." I didn't enunciate very well there. I said " 'em" rather than clearly saying "them." My bad. Happy holidays and thanks for watching!
