WHICH STRINGS TO USE: Enrie Ball never let me down but consider that I am talking about Italy market. Due to the unconstant quality I have found here in major brands I came to the conclusion that most of them are sending their lower-quality production runs over here. The situation may be different in your country, for example in USA or UK or even Germany, where I think they sell their first quality and there may be a lower percentage of faulty strings.
Also, remember that too much of a string angle over the saddle and beyond (for example on strings through the body) damages the various (and very complicated system of) overlapping windings especially of the bigger (low b) strings thus affecting sound and intonation. You can trust me for the words, I have made severe tests.

After weeks of messing around with my first 5-string and going through tons of videos without success, I stumbeled across this one. I just literally nearly fell off my chair: Unrolled the B string a little, let it turn into position, tuned it back up and BAAAAM --> Spot on. This is crazy, how is this not on every single "how to set up you bass" video!?

You won't get twisting on the B-string unless you wrap the string around the post by hand (like he did in the video with the first loop). Just always do it by turning the tuning peg and you won't have that problem. That said, it's an interesting point to be aware of and worth checking before completely tightening up the string.

Very useful video - I had never considered the possiblity of rolling/twisting the string when fitting, I also found after changing strings on my new bass the low B was suddenly "dull". Lowering the neck pickup on the bass side did indeed brighten it noticably. Glad I found this!

That can be sorted by changing the bridge saddles. I put flatwounds on a Fender Jazz and the action felt alright but the strings were far too taught for me, and I was told by one of my tutors to lower the saddles and it helped it a lot.

He knows his business. One of the few people I have ever heard explain PROPERLY the way a string vibrates. It is slightly more complicated than this explanation, but he makes a complicated point simply. The big challenge of 5 string bass, is having a speaker system that will reproduce the fundamental frequency of the B. There are some high end bass reproduction systems that do a terrible job. And some cheap ones that nail it. The best low bucks one rhymes with skeevy.
@1BassJohn
@1BassJohn 11 лет назад
Hey Dustin, I hope you don't mind me providing a perspective! Greetings from Australia.. You make a very good point. Some manufacturers are doing balanced sets, though this dynamic you describe still occurs. Circle K do balanced sets, but this results in their low B, E, A strings being of a massive gauge to compensate. I've heard good things, but this just doesn't sound practical. For the moment keep an eye out for balanced sets. It varies also from bass to bass! All the best, J
@JPastorius3
@JPastorius3 11 лет назад
You can change that by tweaking the set up slightly. I'm not saying that you should, it might be what you want but (this is an idea that's just come to me so I apologise if its not thought through) it could warp your neck somewhat if the tensions are significantly unbalanced.
@FruduaTv

yes this is a problem with any tupe of string for bass or guitar, in case of guitar you especially need to take care of this when mounting strings on a Floyd Rose

Ther lower strings "move" more because on the standard sets they have lower tension than the higher ones. If you have even tension they move the same!
@seasonedtoker
@seasonedtoker 11 лет назад
and to add my two cents - the best thing for a B-string is to install the string, then turn the ball end in one direction to tighten the winding back. this is a trick by Richard Hoover and it's an old piano string trick. this works best on top loading bridges with exposed ball ends, others are harder to do.

If you are on a budget, the trick is to be frugal, but not cheap! I'd recommend using flatwound strings, they're a bit more mellow and warm, and you don't get scraping sounds from the windings! A set of D'Addario flatwounds will cost you $30-$40 bucks, but unless you're a heavy popper, you won't need to replace them for years, as opposed to every couple of weeks. Short-term pain, long-term gain! Just don't forget to clean them when you're done!

If you find that your strings feel too tense lower the bridge saddles, but be careful to avoid lowering them too much, else you'll get fret buzz on the high frets.

When I'm in a musicshop I check the 5 stringbass with playing the E string and watch on the 12 fret how many second it plays before dividing into two bows playing the first partial and not moving at 12 fret. ( did you get that) Then trying the B string and watching how many second it plays before dividing at 12 fret. Usually a much shorter time than we belieave, Our ears fools us that the bass is playing a low B while in fact it goes to the octave. It is easy to see comparing the E and B string while still hanging in the shop. A fast way to find a bass with good B string. You can also listen to the string with an octave box and you hear when the string divides into an octave directly
@FruduaTv
@FruduaTv 9 лет назад
Ola it's not exactly like this :) both the fundamental and the upper partial octave are playing at the same time. And if you were amplified remember that very rarely bass cabinet goes lower than a "A" (but I never said this ahahahah)
@olaandersson3599
@olaandersson3599 9 лет назад
FruduaTv I know they work at the same time but at one point the fundemental stops and the string divides without the fundemental. You get an motion of the string that looks like an "8" with no motion in the midle. This is a fast way to try a 5 string. Count the seconds. our ears get fooled imaging the Fundemental to be there the whole time.

Salve Galeazzo! Qualche consiglio? Forse un bridge hipshot?Grazie

@busseteiro DO NOT get Rotosound. They do NOT have 'growl' in the lows. They R all MIDRANGE. U can basically convert N E steel string 2 a Rotosound by submerging it in strong acid, so it etches the surface. This changes the tone, cutting the highs & lows & giving it added fuzzy warmth. They also eat frets like crazy (like sandpaper). Taper or contact core strings have 'piano' type sound, but lack compression 4 'growl', unless compressed after (electronically), BUT non-taper lack sustain...

Fantastic video Galeazzo, la ringrazio per il dono! I would say however, that a vibrating string does not create an elliptical path, but a parabola. Geometrically both are surface intersections of a conic surface however an ellipse has far nodal points at 90° and a parabola does not ;-D I took one of my 5-strings to check this out. It made three turns in my hand and after stretching and tuning back up it seemed nicer. Certainly worthwhile remembering to do this. Thank you again.

S.I.T. strings is definitely not included on the correct low B--the E string also sounds awful after some use. I'm looking forward to change my s.i.t. strings to a Rotosound swing bass. That modafukah from frudua tv should at least tell us the correct low B's string if he doesn't want to mention the bad ones. I'm a po' boy and I can't afford buying several strings set and then find out which one has a correct low B.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you've never played a Sadowsky, right? ;-) Hell, most of MY current 5+ strings are 35" (5 of 7) & I prefer the certain something you get, but you pay a price with stretches, less choice of strings and simply a different *feel* due to the increase of neck/body mass compared to 4s. And I'd put my 'Ray 5 or '96 Ibanez SR-1206 (better than almost anything they have out now) against my Spectors or Mike Lulls. 1" is only a 7% increase in string tension.

@mickkennedy1344
@mickkennedy1344 9 лет назад
On all my 'Low B' acoustic bass guitars (since I pull and pluck the string hard when playing) I adjusted the truss rod to give me much more 'neck relief' than would be normal on a standard 'EADG' bass -- this is necessary to prevent 'fret buzz' from the low B string. I never wrap the low B, by hand, round the tuning post - as this causes the string to 'twist'. The 'Low B' string, which is harder to tune than all the other strings, I tune by (it's a gradual process) running down the scale from the higher 'B' on the A string;; next, I compare the open 'Low B' string to the high B at the 7th fret on the E string;; next, I fret the Low B at the 5th fret and compare it to the open E string;; repeat this 'cycle' two or three times until you've 'fine tuned' that Low B - it only takes tiny turns . Lastly, if you really want to faithfully reproduce that 'Low B' note (30Hz) through a speaker -- instead of just its 'overtone' -- then you'll need to load that speaker (a high quality speaker) into -- remember 'sound is round' (it's not square) -- a tube or pipe (1/4 wave) of TEN FOOT length.!

@eggobass I haven't been building instruments for years, i'm not the one who uploaded this video. It's just how i do it, and i've never built an instrument - yet. Though i've read many guides and listened to many different people, and no one yet said that you should bend before cutting. And i still see no sense in it, since you can get the perfect measure doing it like that. The string can be winded perfectly even when you cut before bending.

Different people have different preferences in tone. That's why it's wise to try out different strings to determine which ones sound and feel the best to you. That is also why there are nickel and stainless strings as well as many different string sizes. You'll find the tension also varies between different manufacturers (even in the same guage) Nickel strings have a lighter feel with more overtones (more sparkle) than stainless. Stainless have a solid feel that's less dynamic (requires less finesse).
