How to Enter the HOME of an 'AGGRESSIVE DOG'

Hey! Today I'm starting a little mini-series about walking 'aggressive' dogs. In this video, we're talking about how, as a dog walker, you can enter the home of a dog that's showing aggression, so that you can get it outside for a walk.
Also, want to mention that I don't believe there are 'aggressive' dogs. I think that's a blanket term for dogs that react with aggression when triggered by certain stimuli. As a society, we've come to think that dogs should be completely docile, but in reality, they're animals! In the same way that you can react with anger to a certain situation, they're allowed to act with that same kind of anger.
So, what we have to do as dog walkers is figure out what's triggering the dog, so that we can take away their fear.
Hope you enjoy!
xoxo

I believe that too! Until a dog bite my leg while the owner just yelled “Stop It” instead of secure the dog! 😂

I have a dog and a dogwalker when I am at work, but I would NEVER ever let a stranger go to my home and take my dog out! I always meet the persons that wants to walk my dog (we have 2 girls atm) at least 1-3 times first outside on a walk with the dog and then we go home and let them be alone for some time and take out the dog to see how that is works out, and I meet them up outside. If it goes well then it is ok to go in our house alone because the dog already met the person a couple of times with me. :)

YES! That's why I ALWAYS do a meet and greet before starting with any new client. Even after meeting though some dogs can have a bit of stranger-danger until they get used to the walker, which is what this video is generally geared towards. That, and people who work for dog walking companies that don't tend to do meet-and-greets before (crazy, I know)

A slip lead is usually very handy. Usually i can slip the slip lead over the dog & once that's on the dog calms down and we just head outside. And once outside the dog usually gets distracted and is happy walking to where the bonding starts happening. Having regular daily walks with the same dog Walker at the same time daily helps too. Also, grabbing the dogs own leash or favorite toy while inside helps too to distract it. Don't ever act scared! Just take it quiet & slow & calmly. If there's 2 dogs pay attention to the more friendly one. The shyer one will cstch on you're a good person.

What about the owners' responsibility? They surely knew their dog could be agressive and had an issue, which they should have looked to solve, with lessons, training, etc....

You can refuse to do service. If you accept it after meeting the dog that is on you.

I’ve been working with a dog that only shows aggression when around the owners. As soon as it’s just us he’s nervous but no aggression. I’ve had multiple meet ups with the owners present (7 meet ups total at first 3x a week for the first week and then 4days in a row the 2nd week) there is absolutely no improvement at all with the dog when the owners are present, I can be there for an hour and he goes to bed for a few minutes then is right back up hackles raised snarling at you. Figured it was because owners were present and as soon as it’s just us the dog is nervous but shows no aggression. I wish treats would work but he’s old and near the end of his life, owners are struggling to feed him anything at all (he even refuses streak, chicken, eggs, and won’t touch dog food at all) so unfortunately I can’t offer treats. It sucks because I know he’s a sweet dog but it is taking a lot of work to gain his trust he only accepts my presence without the owners around and I’m not sure how it’s going to be when I start walking in alone, still working on gaining his trust and will be continuing to visit before I start pet sitting him for a week.

Thank you so much for posting these very valuable instructions on your site! I asked my dog walker to use these techniques today when she came over to walk my extremely protective dog. They worked perfectly. She was still barky but she didn’t nip at her. I’d been having my dog walker wait until I brought them outside to her. This is much more effective.

So what happens if you’ve been walking the dog for almost a year and it’s prone to Cocker Rage? Sometimes he’s fine with me and other times resource guards something whilst growling and barking.

That is terrifying. I wonder what if there isn't a close room that you can get in and the dog jump on you. Head to head

I’m shocked!!!! When untrained badly behaved dogs lunge, charge snarl and growl at perfect strangers , the owners usually blame the person the dog attacks for existing . I’m shocked than any dog lover admits dogs are aggressive.

Hi! I have a question,have you ever got a dangerous dog to walk for example a pit bull or Rottweiler
@rodrigoarenas7973

I have a friend who has a pitbull and when I go to his house the dog just goes crazy on me, he starts barking really loud and it's just not good, He keeps him in his laundry room whenever I go to his house, I've already tried those things with the dog twice and it didn't work 😂
@LC05
@LC05 5 лет назад
Twice is not enough times. It takes lots and lots of repetition. It also sounds like your friend may need to socialize his dog or train him on how to behave around guests. Putting the dog in the laudry room is only making him associate being isolated with people coming over, which is only going to make the problem worse.

My case is similar but I happen to live in the 2nd floor of this place. It's a chance everytime I arrive home. I never know when they left the.door opened (downstairs) and he's gonna come at me barking like he's gonna bite me any second. Idk what to do anymore. :(

How did you charge for a dog walk when it took 40 min just to get near him?

I hate to be wise after the event, and I'm no expert, but I would not go up the stairs, or even leave the hallway. I would call to the dog, after all, I outrank her, so she should come to me, not the other way round. Also, I wouldnt want to proceed into the dog's territory, and potentially surprise her, or even have her come at me from behind and block my exit in a dreaded flanking movement. Its similar with humans isnt it? If you have to enter a property because someone may be ill or dying, you want them to know where you are from the minute you go thru the door.

I had a male vizla. Hhhh the most stubborn breed if you don't give them right amount of exercise. But he was so gentle. Some stranded cats would aproch and eat from his bowl. And yeah he would howl like a wolf if you leave him. They aren't easy dog to train because they are very smart and active breed. They only dog so far that I couldn't aproch was shot by a pistol and freaked the hell out. Was a Rottweiler German shepherd mix and he was sitting on my neighbors porch bleeding out.

Aggression is the way in which a dog reacts to stressful or scary situations, so it seems like there might be some underlying things going on with your dog. With something like that, it's really hard to give advice without meeting the dog, so I HIGHLY recommend finding a dog trainer in your area that can work with you. I wish I could help more! But it really is difficult to give advice without meeting him in person to assess him
