Nice quick method. Works well . WORD of caution for anyone reading. Check weather forecast for any strong winds over the next 48 hours. Posts may need additional support while setting as panels are in place .
Great job ..... and so nice to have some good helpers ....... I’ve a fence to renovate when the lockdown is over ..... but at 71 it’ll be a challenge... thanks for the tips ...... regards fred
I love the share. Inspires fresh ideas. The precast fence posts and gravel boards are brilliant, and I like how they fit together. We do not have them readily available at our hardware stores here in California. Vinyl fencing or composite seems to be the popular choice here, but I much prefer what you've done, using the concrete and wood fencing together, and it appears far more affordable. I'm going to look into concrete companies and see if I can find something similar that works. Thank you for sharing, and God bless you and yours.
Great job Chris & Family keep the videos coming for the knockers of this vid the gravel boards are 30cm high and the panels 150cm high and the posts 8 ft
@@marcelboogaard5449 Hi Marcel the measurements l quoted were for a 6ft high fence the fence in the video was a 7ft fence 30cm or 12 in concrete gravel board, 180cm or 6 ft fence panel, and 9 ft or 270 cm concrete post hope this helps.
Thanks for the video again. I see you've put in some gravel and bricks underneath the concrete gravel boards. I take it was to make them temporarily level. Once the concrete with the post has set, did you compact the gravel under the gravel boards? How do you make sure the concrete gravel boards won't sink?
I wish we had that type of fencing here in America, especially where I am in Miami, Florida.....it is a swamp and always wet...I am going to be replacing some rotted fencing, only 5 years old....the fence posts are gone as well. What you have looks like it would last for a long time (might have to have more open slats for the hurricane winds to pass through though)
We have pretty strong winds here in UK. These concrete posts and bottom gravel boards are long term solution. Very hard work if you doing it yourself, but once done just forget it. In future if there is any damage that will be to the wooden panels and can be easily removed and new ones slotted from top.
Personally I'd prefer a wall. I always recommend to any body that if they must have a fence use concrete fence posts and at least one concrete panel at the bottom ,that way at least if the timber panels rot or get damaged they can be replaced easily. Good job though .
I have a question we having a 4ft fence concrete posts and bases on incline Hill but they ain't all in line at the top he said the incline from front to back is 400mm and has to be staggered for damp corse is this right ?
looks very nice and good team work! how long was the concrete post? how depth were the holes (how much cm of the post were buried?) and what kind of soil is it? is there any movement after 4 years (must be passing some several windy periods?). Many thank for sharing the experiences to other people..
I'm planning to fit the gate to one of the intermediate concrete posts that are not attached to any wall. Do you think this would be an issue (weight and movement)?
The daughter is lovely. Wish she worked on site with me instead of all the ugly, overweight, hairy buggers. I'd be willing to work Saturday's too :) Great to see the family getting stuck in. Well done!
313keiko1 The string is a guide to keep the posts in a straight line. As long as they’re in line at the bottom if each post is plumb they will be in line at the top and middle!
I live in Kansas. Did you buy those concrete posts and panels pre-made from a store or are they custom work? I've never seen that before. The yard project looks great, it's a private paradise.
hey thanks my friend, yes they are all pre cast concrete posts and pre-made fence panels. We can purchase these from most builders merchants or DIY places....
Is this McKenzie crescent in Cheadle? My nan lived on McKenzie all her life and her best friend mrs plant used to live in the house you are doing the fencing.Great video aswell.
Hi mate. Great install. I'm in the process off planning a retaining wall. Rsjs concreted vertically then sleepers slotted in. The wall is 900mm high so I'll do 900 in the ground. Question is how wide does the hole need to be for the Rsj post? Will be using 152x152mm Rsjs. Would postcrete be okay for this application as I have no clue how to make concrete? Sorry for all the questions.
Hi, you can use postcrete, use double bags or a concrete ballast mix using either ordinary portland cement or a rapid curing portland cement. You can get this in a ready mixed form or mix it your self at a 4 x 1 ratio (4 ballast and 1 cement) mix it to a stiff slump and your away..
Thanks for the video. Is your fence still holding well after two years, especially after the recent storms? I'm thinking about doing the same. Wondering whether 9ft concrete post is enough for 7ft fence (gravel boards + panels). Also whether postcrete is strong enough to hold the posts. My fence is a bit on a slope.
This type with concrete posts have grooved channels which takes the fence panel sides both geavel boards and fence sit in the channels so no need of screwing them in-:)
@@foundationgood123 thank you for replying. Your video was so straight forward I'm hoping me and the other half can fit 6 posts and 5 panels without having to get someone in. Thanks again!
The legal height for a front garden fence in the UK is no higher than one metre. Any fences that are above this legal limit or front onto a road, footpath or public highway may be subject to planning permission
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought planning rules state that you can’t erect a fence that is higher than 1m if it boarders a road, like this one does?
@@marcelboogaard5449 Oh by god yes, you stand back to back walk ten paces away turn and try to hurl them at each other. My uncle learned the trick to stand upwind of your opponent. He was the fencing champion of The Borders area. The loser gets a nice send off, buried, encased in concrete with the Last Post playing.
TheAudiostud Hi, approximately at the time for 11 x 6ft fence x 11 x 9ft posts x 11 gravel boards x 11 x postcrete came to £560 all in. Hope that helps😊
Chris - How did you cut down the Gravel Board? You've got a 90cm one (ish) on your corner. P.S. I've just done a 7ft Fence using this very same method. This video gave me the knowledge and confidence to do a proper job of it...Perfect.
I’m trying to get my fence done it’s one side 17 meter long how much would this coast with labour and material. I keep on getting different quotes from 2000 British pound to 950 pounds. The cheapest one wanted money up front he was a privet contractor so I bailed it sounded fishy the rest I’m just lost . Please help thanks for the great video and work
Whats the materials about £570 ish the labour about £380? Are there two or three men working which should take them a day then you can work their day rate out! If its two men they will be on £190 each a day. is there skips involved is the terrain undulating or on a hill because that makes it difficult to go faster! Some food for thought.
This style fencing does not exist in the us.. Its such a great way to build though. After searching for days im going to have to make formscand make my own posts and gravel boards.

Chris Longhurst thanks Chris could I ask another quick question I’m digging footings out for a retaining wall which will be about 2.5ft to 3 ft high how deep would you recommend the footings be
Why don't people use safety equipment? It says right on the bag the dust is cancerous and not to inhale. It take 1 second to put on a high quality respirator, they are only 10 $. Getting it in your eyes also sucks, burns a lot. Stay safe out there.
Posts are too short, for a 2m fence, you want about 90-100cm in the ground. You also left no "drip gap" at the bottom of the panels, which makes them rot. need to be 1cm. But it should blow down before that happens. However congrats On getting the wife and daughter to help with the work! 😀
heya I've just done a fence. 6 by 6 foot panels are £25, grave boards are £15, 9 foot posts were £17, bag of postcrete £5, post digging tool £40 (www.screwfix.com/p/roughneck-fibreglass-post-hole-digger/35835?kpid=35835&gclid=CjwKEAjwhYLLBRDIjoCu0te4niASJAC0V4QP9--dt7Y9l9IiWtcFCNlrIn5oly3SKd9DID3z1n1pQRoCamXw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds&dclid=CJfGsuai-tQCFQWjUQodv04ApA) post digging bar £40 (www.toolstation.com/shop/p48155?mkwid=sR9ubZEnb_dc&pcrid=142476648874&pkw=&pmt=&product=48155&gclid=CjwKEAjwhYLLBRDIjoCu0te4niASJAC0) so to do one 6 foot section it will cost about.... £160. each extra section will cost... £60. so to do a 100 foot garden fence it will cost.... £1060. The two tools are very important, any brand will do as they are all made to last. the post digging bar is used to smash through roots & large stone, it is just a 20-30 kg iron spiked bar, without it digging with any spade is impossible. the post digging tool/spade make it possible to dig a hole 8 inches wide & up to 3 feet deep, then you keep the soil highly compacted & need less postcrete (one bag each hole). just throw some stones into the hole before the post, then pour in a bucket of water & then the postcrete. you can work out the best way to level it etc, mine isn't perfect, but i did it =)
