There are lots of different ways to reduce your risk of injury. Protective equipment is number one. But another way is to understand how to fall in a way that absorbs impact and reduces momentum slowly. So, here are some methods I use to fall. You can't always mitigate injury, but it's better to do so when you have the chance!

I’m an older skater that just started months ago, I wear safety gear since I’m also a runner and can’t afford getting hurt, awesome video.

That's awesome. Seriously, safety gear is the best thing to "reduce risk of injury" (but that's for a different video haha). I love seeing people with their protective gear on. I can't afford to get hurt either, and the more pain I am in the worse I skate! Don't want to risk that! 🥲

My worst falls have been the "unexpected" ones, wheelbite and those evil little pebbles, have been responsible for my worst injuries. I became paranoid of slipping out hard (e.g. shuvits) because I kept landing on my wheelbite injured wrist, but the fall itself wasn't so bad. Same for landing primo multiple times... unless I've just been lucky on those ..😅 Not that it matters since falling will always seem scary when you've spent 97% of your life NOT doing it...
@SarahParkMatott
@SarahParkMatott 3 года назад
for sure, it's the unexpected pebbles that get you the hardest 😭I've been hurt more on a pebble than I have landing primo as well. You just never know. And big "yes" to the fact that of course it's scary when we spend most of our lives not falling 😂 Funny but accurate way to think of it.

This is exactly the video I wanted, and I don't know if I have seen anyone else cover stationary falls like you did. Thanks so much, my fear of hurting and injuring myself is one of the biggest things deterring me from skating, I am so scared of taking a bad fall and permanently damaging my body in some way. A big thing here I feel is being able to react in the heat of the moment to any fall you are having to deal with. Did you practice falling in certain ways to get the reflexes? I don't think I could trust myself to bend my knees and elbows consistently. I panic and freeze up alot
@SarahParkMatott
@SarahParkMatott 3 года назад
I completely get it. I don't know how I love skating, as I have always been a huge scardy cat. I'm not one to do stuff that might get me hurt. I've always had pretty quick reflexes. And with falling, you can practice tumbling and rolling, falling on bent elbows and rolling out (tuck and roll) kind of things in the grass. That familiarity really does help, because you know that it doesn't hurt as much as you think it might. And after falling a few times, I realized that most falls really didn't hurt at all, especially when you can roll with them or absorb a lot of the force. I think the most important part is to practice with that loose and gentle mindset. So, when you're learning to ollie or shove it or anything, make sure you're always trying to land with bent knees. Because if you have this practice under your belt, when something does go wrong, it is a little more second nature. I'm always ready to hop off with bent knees because that's how I've been training myself to land tricks in the first place. It's like setting yourself up for both situations.

Thank you! I keep getting stuck in that zero gravity mindset whenever I fall so I don't usually react fast enough, so this is nice. Going to fall on grass after school now
@SarahParkMatott
@SarahParkMatott 3 года назад
Yes! Actually, being able to react fast enough is probably the hardest thing. So, getting into good habits of staying "bendy" and absorbing impact rather than trying to stop is are just good habits to work on now! And the grass is a great place to do that!
@rloach067
@rloach067 2 года назад
i hadn't thought about the hop!! i noticed now thinking about it that i did it a lot unconciously, like a late bail xDDD but this is definitely the biggest difference imo in the impact of a fall!! the one time i fell the hardest was when i tried to get off the board but my feet somehow felt stuck and so i just fell hard on my side (i absorbed the impact with my arms "acordioning" but i got a headache from the sudden impact anyway even if i didn't fall on my head). I'll keep this in mind for next time! if i ever feel stuck, just try to conciously hop!! thank you :DD
@SarahParkMatott

Today was my first time trying to land a yo-yo hop on concrete. The board slipped out, wouldn’t have been so bad if I just landed on my butt, but I stuck my back foot out and really crunched it. I’m usually pretty careful and methodical when learning this kind of stuff, but never really planned on falling. Definitely could’ve used that little hop out you demonstrated. Let’s hope that I can get back on my board soon.

Same here, man! I made the same mistake in May and broke 5 bones in my foot as a result. It’s helpful to see versions of falls where you can (hopefully) avoid crushing your feet, too, since I think the arms/wrists are such a big point in most of these kinds of videos.

Oh wow! I injured myself yesterday almost exactly like what you did at :30. I'm trying to learn how to drop in (unsuccessfully), and when I dropped my rear foot slipped off, while my front foot was still on the rollng board- stretching my knee out sideways and hyperextending it. Just got back from the doctor - luckily its just an MCL strain so will need to rest for ~month. In that instance, it would be better to "hop bail"? LIke do I need to train myself to get off the board when the sh*t hits the fan?
@SarahParkMatott
@SarahParkMatott 3 года назад
ouch, yeah..and that back foot slipping off during a drop in seems to be pretty common. Controlled practice of these methods is definitely not a bad idea. Whether it's tucking and rolling, spinning, leaning back and trying to get your feet off the board before it completely slips out. Kinds of reminds your body what to do in the heat of the moment if it's had that practice before. But also, focusing on things like form (bent knees etc) puts you in a good position to perform them when accidents do happen. In that instance, it depends on the angle you're slipping out of. It's pretty hard to get the front foot off sliding down the ramp like that, but being able to roll or fall forward or back, like I did, allowed me to kind of change the angle of the stretch in a way and protect my ligaments. When you do a full on split slipping out, it's easy to over stretch those joints. I'm glad you only strained it though! Gotta take that rest to heart and maybe try some PT. I'm doing PT right now to try and avoid future injuries! :D

@@josephrivera6721 It’s hard to prevent a rolled ankle. Taking your time and learning at your own speed will definitely help reduce them. And stretching is great. Gentle stretching. Idk how you control your falls. For me, when I slam, it just happens. Like I don’t even know what happened. It happens so fast and I don’t have time to think. I’m just on the ground in pain. I will say after hurting my wrist over and over, it’s almost instinctual now to protect my left wrist. Yesterday I slammed hard on my butt, but didn’t put down my wrist haha. Board literally just went out from under me. My butt is sore as heck today. I wonder if you just develop instincts over time after getting hurt to protect areas that get repeatedly hammered. Oh and after getting hurt a lot in the beginning, I wear safety gear 90% of the time. Ironically, seems I fall less when it’s on 😂
@SarahParkMatott
@SarahParkMatott Год назад
haha I have definitely gotten better at falling over time. I think you do develop skills, strength, flexibility etc that helps. I know also the more I train those areas, the better I am at avoiding or catching a fall. Even just the more board control I got, the better I became at getting off the board before it was too late.
