As someone who has been working on ollie for 6 months, this is the best advice out there. Take foot positioning for example. Aaron Kyro says, put feet closer together. Sure if you are a pro - this works great, cause you do ollies as easily as blinking your eye. But for a beginner - as the girl says - it is the worst you can do. Do the opposite, you will feel more stable, you will level the board much better ... you won't hear this often from any tutorials. GOOD JOB SARAH!
@SarahParkMatott
@SarahParkMatott 3 года назад
Thanks! I'm glad you appreciated the content. 😃 (I obviously agree that this is important lol) I think there is a little disconnect between some of the skaters making tutorials and the ones watching them. Like this foot positioning example, I think most of the teachers assume that skaters want to know how to ollie higher after they learn how to level out the ollie, when a lot of skaters are trying to learn how to "ollie higher" because they don't know how to level out the ollie. So the intended audience and the actual audience seem to be a bit different, without either side realizing it. And so, it seems to be a bit of a cycle.
@sugaranderson1
@sugaranderson1 3 года назад
very well done on this ollie tutorial! these are the information which every beginner needs to know. most especially, the front foot placement. majority of the tutorial demonstrated the front foot in the middle of the board to level it out! keep it up!
@SarahParkMatott
@SarahParkMatott 3 года назад
@@sugaranderson1 Thank you! I'm glad you think so 😃🙏 Yeah, I think increasing the distance between the nose and your front foot as a beginner is usually not a great idea. It's hard enough to push the nose forward as it is 😂

Like perfecting your ollies right? I’ve taught a couple of my friends to Ollie both stationary and moving in the matter of a few days. I couldn’t imagine you’re failing to actually ollie.
@lemn6317
@lemn6317 2 года назад
i feel it all depends on each person and what you feel comfortable with. for example. im learning how to ollie but its much easier for me to keep my feet closer together and when it comes to popping a different foot position feels more comfortable and better to pop with.

Finally second video I've seen where the slide is disproved. I'm pretty sure I don't even "slide". I don't know where that even came from. People overstate and over-emphasize the slide! Barely any slide. More like a scratch to me.

I love how thorough your videos are in comparison to other youtubers! You're really good at explaining things as if we've never heard them, while other sketeboarding youtubers have a tendency to explain things as if they're super basic, just because it's something they've been familiar with for so long. 7:40 thanks for this. It seems no one really talks about this aspect of Ollies. When I started, my board would slip before I jump/pop and it had to do with my weight distribution/shoulders.

I couldn’t figure out why it was behind but now I know so thank you for the help. It means a lot to me. Great video thanks! Your 5-step Ollie method is also innovative and excellent. The main thing it adds for me is muscle memory ‘at-speed’ which is what makes it so hard to translate the slow steps from other how to videos into an actual Ollie. I used your method to get a beginner-level switch Ollie and it worked in the span of maybe 20 minutes. Lots of room for me to improve them, but I never ever thought I would land any kind of switch Ollie at all before seeing your video.
@SarahParkMatott
@SarahParkMatott 3 года назад
That's awesome! I'm really happy to hear that it helped you so much. I actually came up with the method while learning switch myself. I wanted to find something that helped with all the little parts of an ollie but wasn't a "1,000 tries" method. And the 5-step method was what I came up with :D Congrats on the switch ollie! Mine still needs a lot of improvement too, but we are getting there 💪😄

As an OG newbie, this is the best Ollie video I've watched. And I've watched them ALL, LOL. I can't seem to get my back foot up. I will practice your back foot exercise. Thanks!

wow, thank you! 😃 I can't remember if I mentioned them in this video, but if you're struggling to get that back foot up, another great exercise to practice is the knee tuck jump! They always help me remember to bring both my feet up. I just do one or two, then try the trick again :D

Mad props for all the practice and work you've done while indoors. I've tried working on manuals that way, but, get bored out of my mind. Probably, I would be better off doing more of that, but, I just feel like I've got to roll and move around.
