If you’ve got more than one cat you’ll know just how difficult it can be to feed them either different diets or different amounts. Well in this video I’m going to give you 5 strategies for how to feed multiple cats different diets or different amounts and how to keep cats from stealing and eating each others food.
While this can be challenging, learning how to feed multiple cats at the same time is very important if your cats have different food requirements. They might be different ages. One may be overweight of obese and so need to be fed a weight loss diet (or just less). One of your cats may even need to be fed a special prescription diet if they are unwell or suffer from something like hyperthyroidism, feed allergies or kidney failure.

What strategy do you use to feed different diets?
@Piinkypanter
@Piinkypanter Год назад
I know i will start the whole in a box first Got a new obese cat and i already had a cat slighty smaller then regulair size. Thank you for helping bringing my stress levels down about this subject. EDIT: I used the top of the litterbox to make a feeding station for the smaller cat. Don't know yet how much the smaller cat enjoyes it but hey the fattie can't reach it :D I took the door out of the litterbox cap and put a piece of cardboard with a smaller hole back in place.

This was very helpful. Thanks for giving many options. I have an adult cat and a kitten. I have been trying to feed them in different rooms/ supervised feedings. Growing up, my parents just laid the food out for our cats all day long.

Thank you! I asked my vet and they just said they didn't know. I have a small adult on a special diet and a large kitten on a normal diet and my adult is always wanting to eat the kitten's food! The size thing was something we tried, but they are the same size even though one is older. I will defiantly look into a chip feeder!

I cannot afford the chip feeders, but I have an idea on how to use them without some of the issues everyone’s having with them.. (2nd cat squeezing in) Get one of those cat shelves for the wall, just big enough for the feeder and the intended cat to fit on, without room for a 2nd cat. By the time they jump down, it should be closed before another cat could jump up. (I don’t have one, so correct me if I’m wrong on the timing) They have shelves with a side railing, might help deter other cats from attempting to jump up from the side. And then a 2nd shelf set up the same for the other cat(s)

Sounds like it's worth a try anyway, and if you position them so there's only one way to reach that shelf, maybe a tricky distance away or a funny angle, and maybe have them on separate walls... I imagine that would help even more!

Hey guys maybe this tip helps you... i used the top of the litterbox (they dont like to have it on their litterbox so i already removed it) to make a feeding station for the smaller cat. Took the door out. Added a piece of cardboard with a whole just big enough for the smaller cat and only big enough for only the head of the big one haha

I have been doing the supervised feedings. I cannot get s microchip feeder as my one cat seems to react to the materials these machines are made of and breaks out in skin acne. I have noticed with the supervised feedings that my one cat who needs a special diet, will smell the non diet food on the other cat and hiss at him. What do I do then in trying to avoid this?

@OurPetsHealth 2 года назад
yes, you're absolutely right that he's going to be more prone to arthritis and so keeping him on the lean side will make a huge difference. If he's really young though, and depending on his condition, he might still benefit from a kitten food for a bit longer

So my roommates 16lb cat has started eating my elder 12lb cats food. The 16lb cat is quite lean though and can slip through very small spaces, hes just very large. My elderly cat eats raw food only due to various health issues, and has no teeth so her food is very soft. The 16lb cat eats fish only wet food due to a poultry allergy. He has started eating the elderly cats food pretty voraciously. He and my smallest cat eats from the micro chip bowels but i always heard that those feeders are recommended for raw food. Im really at a loss on what to do.

Okay so I need some help. My whole situation has been chaotic with feeding since getting a kitten. Never knew this was a thing as I grew up with dogs anyway.. my kitten is put in a separate room to eat his two cans in the morning. He literally eats them so fast I think because he hates being locked in there and he knows when he’s done he has at the rest of my two adult cats. He screams for the second can when he’s done with the first one, and then screams at the finishing of the second. My vet told me to feed him as much as he wants while he’s young but this has turned into an issue. My adult cats don’t get to finish their food when I let him out. One of my adults doesn’t like to jump up on the counter which is the only inaccessible area the kitten can’t get to. It’s been madness, any tips or suggestions widely encouraged!!

I have 2 cats of different ages. One is almost 12months and the other 8mnths. I wanna transition the older cat to adult food so that he'll be getting proper nutrition. How do I do this as they've always eaten together and is it easier to just transition them both to adult food since they're close in age? Currently feeding them both kitten food.
@Piinkypanter
@Piinkypanter Год назад
Wondered how you solved it. I thought to myself still feed them together but just 2 bowls and than seperate them a little bit and after kitten 2 is on adult you can bring it back together again

Only thing I'm thinking with the expensive microchip car feeder is that it still doesn't keep the other cat from coming over to eat once the bowl is open, right?
@OurPetsHealth
@OurPetsHealth 4 года назад
they can only really feed from 1 direction and it does close pretty quickly once a cat moves away. Given cat's don't tend to crowd around a food bowl I think there is not much chance of this unless another cat literally barges on over and bullies the other cat away while they are feeding.

I don’t have the microchip feeders but, I can say that, after watching a few videos about the Surefeed feeders, unintended cats can get into the wrong feeder. It depends upon the cat. I’ve seen cats jam their head in beside the intended cat for one feeder. But, not all cats are alike, as I used to think when I was a dog owner. I have 2 cats and one definitely cares about food more than the other and the difference shows in their girth. The Surefeed feeders are pricey but, I think they would work for my cats as, even the heavier one has a quite polite disposition. Note that for bully type personalities and having multi-species in the house, like a cat and dog, they do have covers available for the rear portion of the Surefeed feeders, to stop pets from getting in through the rear part. I think this video has some very good ideas, if the cost of the feeders is out of your price range.

Question : my fat cat attacks my fit cat in order to get my attention so I feed him. What do I do?! Edit : also should I get two microchip feeders ?
@mattbash5372
@mattbash5372 2 года назад
Spray fat cat with water when he attacks, and never reward bad behavior with food rewards. Some cats aren't affected by water spray so I'd also put fat cat in a room by itself for a 20 min time out when it does it too if possible. Hope this behavior has stopped since this was posted.

None of these solutions address how someone who isn't rich, who doesn't have multiple rooms to feed pets in, who does have excess cash to blow on a fancy microchip feeder, can feed multiple cats when in most every case it's not the old cat that's the problem. The old cat has been trained for his entire life and is well disciplined. The kitten is the problem and she steals the old cat's food which is not made for kittens. There's no box that can let in the big cat and keep out the small cat. There's no height that the big cat can get to that the small cat cannot. And the big cat doesn't eat his meal in one sitting. He munches, then walks away and comes back every few minutes, in which time the kitten is stealing his food. The kitten doesn't respond to correction, so unless there is a better feeding option, that only leaves to keep the kitten trapped in her carrier for an hour until the old cat has finished his meal. Obviously this is the least desirable option.

Are there negative consequences for my older cat(5yrs) is nibbling out of the kitten food? We try to monitor well but can't watch it all day. Just dont want a morbidly obese cat 😂
@peggyfreudenthal3012

My smaller cat just pushes past the overweight cat to eat her food. The fat cat doesn't fight back. So I spent $300 on two chip feeders that don't solve my problem. Next I'll try feeding the fat cat alone in the bathroom, though she'll think I'm up to something when I first try to lure her in.

I have a fat cat that I have started to feed less because of his weight and a skinny cat that likes to munch on food throughout the day. I also have an older cat that I've had to put away by herself because she can't use the litter box anymore. This has become really aggravating. The fat cat wants to eat all the food and usually eats all at once but the skinny cat comes back to her bowl throughout the day. I have tried to split up their feedings and tried many things but nothing seems to work because they are always crying for more food. I can't leave food out all day

Im in a like-wise situation My fat cat (adopted him few weeks back, prev owner neglegted him from my pov) ate out of boredom. Since he now has toys he likes his food orientation is less. Playing with the cat pre feeding is what (jackson galaxy on yt) cat daddy advizes. This might help you.. it might not... im still puzzeling over here haha. Im gonna try out the box with a hole only small enough for the healthy cat.

I am in the same situation but my kitten just wants the food in a convenient location. BUT my chunky lady will go anywhere except in the counter tops for food so I have hers on my bathroom counter in a separate room. Kitten still likes to graze but now feels the food is to inconvenient, she wants to be fed like my chunky girl which is on the floor. I’m also in the process of training my kitten to stay off the kitchen counters which I think is just confusing her now. I feel like I just can’t win.

You said it yourself, “not everyone enjoys a lesson delivered the same way”. But because it wasn’t specific to your individual learning preference you choose to get rude, instead of scrolling to a different video. If you’re walking down a sidewalk, and overhear a conversation of a few people chatting among themselves, would you say the same thing to them? Or keep walking?
