How to feed wild birds with the best bird seed. We feed 1000's of Birds here daily. I have nature keep our Vegetable Garden nearly Pest Free, I feed the wild seed eating birds, that bring in Orioles, Mocking birds the Song birds and more clear the insects for us, they nest here and have babies, and keep our garden free of so many worms, pest and insects. No insect spray or powders, no chemicals, all done by the birds, as Mother Nature intended. With all the hummingbirds feeding here daily, the insect eating birds coming in and the seed eaters, we have 1000's of birds here daily feeding.

I have been buying the bird seed from Costco for years. It's the Wagner's western regional blend. I have hundreds of birds and never see dead birds anywhere. The number of birds seems to increase all the time. I go through 40 pounds of seed every three weeks. They eat everything in the mix including the sunflower shells. I have many mourning doves, quail and sparrows. I am in the Southern California Palm Springs area. I throw the seed out and the birds ground feed. I do not put it in containers. The seed is gone within two hours. I throw the seed out on clean dirt areas. I also have 15 hummingbird feeders each one has 10 feeding ports and on busy days have a bird on each port, sometimes two birds sharing a port. I make my own nectar and go through 20 to 30 pounds of sugar a month. I have never had a problem with the bird seed from Costco and it is more affordable than pet store seed.

If you throw on the ground don't you get critters, roaches, rats?

The hawks will feed on the rodents if they come . Circle of life and everything needs to eat . I hate pesticides. Bugs and things are here as food for birds as well. Think about that 🤔

Robbie, I saw one of these nature bird feeder companies mix chili pepper into suet and then mix in the seeds. Birds can't taste capsaicin but squirrels and others can. Bark Butter, that's what they call it. Supposed to be it's good to feed this in the summer too. I was feeding suet with seeds last year in those hangers. The Redwing blackbirds were feasting away but they were messy. The wood pigeons would eat whatever fell but it still attracted rats. Given that the rats ate my neighbours chilipeppers in October, I doubt that chili seasoning works longterm. Today I'm putting up the Hummingbird feeder again. See what happens.

What an amazing Video. I think on your side of the pond What you call Gold Finches is very different to our Gold Finches, wow what a nice little bird. I grow tons of thistles for my bees. and to stop them spreading and becoming a nuisance we harvest all the seeds and what we do not re sow we feed to the Birds and they go barmy for the seeds in winter, Gold finches,Green finches linnets sparrows pigeons all seem to love them. You are so right about feeding different things to different birds.

Nice to see the differences in birds from one coast to the other. I live in Maryland and back up to the woods, 150 ft trees. We also feed the birds year round. Lots of incredible woodpeckers. My favorite being “Woody Woodpecker”. They come right up on my deck and eat the suet all winter long. They can eat a lot of suet 😀 I do put my peanuts in a cage after reading some of the birds could have trouble with swallowing them whole. Not sure if that is true or not. The woodpeckers love to cling on the cage and eat away. I love it when the birds bring their babies up on the deck and show them how to eat from the feeders. Cardinals, Blue Birds, Cat Birds, and the little guys all squeaking for mom and dad to feed them, so precious. I feed the shelled sunflowers in my deck so there is no mess and everyone eats them up, even the Yellow Finches and Blue Birds. We have the sweet Doves that come to the platform feeder. So many beautiful birds!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.

It is true. Baby robins were dying because the parent birds were bringing them to them whole and they were choking to death. I use a peanut cage and chop some for my Carolina Wrens. I'm in Ohio. Also use bird peanuts to avoid the virus that doesn't harm humans but kills birds dead. Human consumption peanuts are not tested; bird peanuts are supposed to be tested. Buy from a reputable dealer.

Great Info: been buying 50 pound sack black sunflower seed takes six months to use up. I have been buying farm feed grade seed. The suet I make my own proper beef fat from prime rib for example, peanut butter, good seeds, (milo or millet ) I form it in a wax or parchment paper lined aluminum pie tin as a mold. During winter months birds nibble on it. Summer is the scarce time for food in my opinion

There is a warning about a certain virus that kills birds but not humans. Bird peanuts are supposed to be tested for this virus. As the virus does not harm humans at all our peanuts for human consumption are not tested. Please buy bird peanuts from a reputable dealer. Also put in a peanut feeder. If you have robin's they will take full-size peanuts to their babies and their babies will choke to death. I use a peanut feeder in summer or chop the peanuts down. They can be put out whole in winter as there are no babies in winter, but, Carolina Wrens in the eastern US need them chopped.

I have just put out de-icers for my fountains to keep them from freezing so my birds will have fresh running water all winter. I have bought my seed from the pet store as well as our local feed store. In that, I put out a feeder with black oil sunflower seed, a Nyjer sock with Nyjer seed for the finches, another feeder is a suet cage where I have made a brick of food which is bird seed mix mixed in with peanut butter, which they absolutely love!!! Also a handful of whole peanuts in a shallow terra cotta pot in the crook of a tree for the scrub jays, stellar jays and the wood peckers! All of the seed is gone in one day and I refill daily.❤️

I keep my seed outside with tight metal-lidded galvanized cans. Nothing gets in or out. Right now I just have one tube feeder that I fill with sunflower chips that I buy at a feed store in 50# bags. Thanks for the tips on what you feed your birds. I'm going to try some bowls like you have and I'll make sure to bring them in at night. I mostly get house finches and goldfinches. I have seen a rat scarfing up the sunflower chips that get thrown to ground occasionally. I definitely don't want to encourage rats, ugh! I also have lots of squirrels. The squirrels can't get to the hanging bird feeder. The squirrels will eat what gets thrown on the ground also. They are getting lots of peanuts from somewhere. I find peanuts planted in all my pots. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge.

We've found that the finches love thistle, but we learned to ONLY buy from a nearby wild bird store that guarantees no pesticides. They love it. We have to have sooooo much seed, we do keep it outside near our feeders. We have been using a metal garbage can with cover that we bought new, just for this purpose, and we bungy cord the top to secure it. So far, not even the racoons have been able to get into it.

I live in the Northeast; homemade suet in the winter is great, also pine cones smeared with peanut butter and parakeet seeds is also a wonderful winter treat. You can buy pine cones but take a walk in the woods and pick your own up off the ground. Pine cone size does not really matter. Tie the pine cones with heavy twine or fishing cord and hang in trees, if you have Shepard’s hooks, tie the cones there.

Hi! I'm a new subbie. Love the birds! I'm in NorCal, & have found that birds go gaga for black oil sunflower seeds. They have a higher fat content. Also, if you want to see Oak Tits, put out some black thistle seed. They live at the tops of oak trees & are very shy. They're a tiny grey bird with a mohawk. At first they'll dart in & out to grab the seed, but as they get comfortable, they will stick around & hang with the other birds. Black thistle seed is pricey, but 1 pound goes a long way. Our local feed store carries it.

Seeing as how I used the black oil sunflower seeds to coax them down from my 300+ year old oak tree and I was able to view them from 3 feet away, I was able to identify them. They are oak tits. We were also able to spot many migratory species normally not seen in suburbia because our yard is a wildlife corridor across the valley between 2 preserves.

The issues with the bird food were 8 years ago, and are no longer happening. I buy commercial bird seed and our birds are thriving. I do buy most of my feed at a farm store. If you buy a mix, avoid anything with milo/red milo. It's cheap filler and most birds won't eat it. Safflower seed works well to discourage the squirrels, who aren't discouraged by baffles, . "squirrel proof" feeders, or "hot" mixes. I have had some success with liquid hot pepper, but it's expensive and hard to use. I am currently experimenting with red pepper powder (you can buy it in bulk in Asian food stores), and canola oil to keep it clinging to the seed!

I have hung out small logs with 2" holes drilled into them and stuffed them with peanut butter and see mix in the winter instead of the store bought suet. I just didnt like the ingredients I saw, and the peanut oil provides a source of fat for them in the winter. I thought only the wood peckers would go for it, but my chickadees and other birds went for it as well. I found that more birds hung around in the winter as well, which is great here in the North East when most of them fly south.

I include a dough cake similar to suet cakes, but don't melt for my birds. I feed a peanut blend and every neighborhood bird parents except Robins feeds their babies this soft food. I had a Robin eat from a seed feeder once! They usually never eat off feeders. I lived in Albuquerque NM and now in Coeur d'Alene ID and the birds love the peanut dough cakes the best.

"Nutritionally, it is perfectly fine to give your birds an occasional piece of bread. If you do feed bread to your birds, be sure that it is not moldy, as some bread molds are toxic to birds. Also, do not put out more than the birds will eat, as it will mold quickly." I stopped feeding bread to birds years ago. We have squirrels and chipmunks here so my feeders were always baffled. We also have hawks so having feeders in a more protected area was always a "must".

You are right bread is great if they want it, I put it out, and it was left in the bowls, so here I stopped, as a kid I always fed the wild birds bread.....maybe our wild birds are spoiled and only want seed, oh well, thanks, Robbie

I live in West TN, North of Memphis and have a lot of Cardinals and a pair of woodpeckers (with red heads, can't remember the name) My seed comes from my local Tractor Supply, because a pet store is over an hour away and I won't buy from grocery stores or discount stores. Occasionally, I've picked up seed from Home Depot if my Tractor Supply is out.
