How To Fill In A V55/5 Form - Importing A Honda CB750 K0 | Part 3
Visit our Blog for a more detailed guide on the DVLA's V55/5 form: www.spannerrash.com/how-to-fi...
In this video, I talk you through the process of filling in and sending off the V55/5 form to import a vehicle into the UK from abroad.
In this case, I am filling out the forms for my newly imported 1971 Honda CB750 K0 motorcycle.
There have been a couple of questions about whether insurance needs to be sent with the form. I found that the guidance tells me this.
If you are in Northern Ireland you DO need insurance to be sent with your V55, however if you are in the rest of the UK you DON'T need to send insurance. Obviously if you are using the vehicle on the road it come under normal traffic laws, this is just what you need to complete this process.
However, this guide should be useful for all who need to fill in a V55, whether you're importing a Cadillac or a registering a Mobility Scooter for the road, it's the same form and you will need to provide similar supporting documents to complete the process.
Whenever I am playing around with one of my projects, I always try to wear good overalls like these ebay.us/2LOCDG and gloves ebay.us/gcA4XD

I wish to start the ball rolling registering a 1973 RD 250 (German Import with matching numbers) I am restoring it as a way to pass the time while I am halfway through a 6 month disqualification (lol) Thought this whole thing was going to be complicated and long-winded but watched your video and printed off the V55 and V112 and got the rest of the relevant paperwork together (German title, purchase receipt, NOVA Acknowledgement, etc) I then spoke to a nice woman at DVLA and she told me they will accept postal orders as well as cheques and will also accept a copy of my full birth certificate as ID after explaining that I currently had no licence due to my ban. Thought your video was well made, clear and concise and easy to understand and will start filling everything in this evening. Thank you sir.

Well, thank you so very much. By a fairly remarkable coincidence, I'm a native southerner but temporarily staying in Bridlington, Yorkshire, where everyone has been so helpful, friendly and kind. I was particularly relieved that I probably didn't need to fill in every single detail in relation to my 2020 Peugeot 208 motor vehicle, which came over to the UK from Spain with me last week. My heart sank as I realised that the top third of the form, with the VIN and engine number entries, was relatively straightforward compared to the rest of it. But perhaps, as usual, I was worrying too much and a lot of the rest isn't required if I provide other (EU conformity) documents. So once again, thank you for restoring some calm and reassurance in what is potentially a stressful and complicated experience.

That's a shame, I've had an inspection before. They are basically checking the frame and engine number, but it must look like a whole bike. There is a lesson for others heare it is best to get the registration done before you take it apart. Once you have the engine in the frame and the wheels on you could just put the other parts on until after the inspection, you don't have to have it completely finished. Good luck.

@@SPANNERRASH Yeah, its annoying. My problem is that the bike needs a lot of time and (some) money spending. I was not keen to spend that money until the DVLA say I can actually ride it. There is always the worry they will finally inspect it and find an expensive or show stopping problem after I have plowed time and money in to it! Maybe I should sell and start again. I've just received the new V5C for an imported Suzuki GT550 but I've noticed that no 'vehicle model' is recorded in box D.3 of the Vehicle Details section. I did state the model on my V55/5 form, and all supporting documentation - including the orginal US Title Document - also stated that the motorcycle is a GT550. Is this a simple omission by the DVLA staff and if so, can I query this with DVLA? Does this mean putting a day aside to sit on hold to them?.... Cheers - Chris

I am sorry but I really do not have an authoritative answer for this. However if it was me, and if the car does have a number plate, and is MOTed, Taxed and Insured. I would check on the DVLA systems, MOT, Insured etc on the registration number that I have on the car and if it appears on them I would keep driving, on the basis that I am complying with the legal requirments. These are the same systems that the Police, and others, check as you are driving along, so if the number doesn't appear on it you will get stopped. However I would also contact my insurance and inform them that the DVLA has asked you to do this. I hope this helps.

How do they know how much duty needs to be paid (5%)? Sales invoice?
@SPANNERRASH
@SPANNERRASH 2 года назад
The duty is paid at the time of import and it has to be paid before the vehicle is registered on the NOVA system. If it wasn't paid then, you'd need to discuss that with the DVLA. The import documentation which includes information like the value of the cargo would indicate how much duty is owed. If you're using a shipping agent this would be dealt with by them.

Thanks very informative, just a couple of questions anyone know what you do if there's zero documents and no owners club, I asked the dvla but they just ignored it and told me stuff I already read on their website. Interested in buying a Tula Muravey but as far as I can find no owners club, in respect to proving age, and what happens with import tax. No paperwork so no idea how long it's been in UK, is it charged on new price from the 70s, current value or what, can you find out if it's on their system before purchasing?
@SPANNERRASH
@SPANNERRASH 3 года назад
Hi NH, Interesting prospect. I can't tell you how to get a dating certificate. Sometimes there are owners clubs with a broader base that can provide dating, is there USSR Bike club? You may have to accept a "Q" but I'd try for age-related first. If it is on NOVA you would just need the VIN or frame number to find out. I'd give them a ring. If not on NOVA I suspect the tax would be 5% of the purchase price. I hope this helps.

No, you do not need an MOT, I have done just this a few times in the last couple of years. Assuming you have dating evidence that shows it is over 40, either the original title document if it is from the US, or a dating certificate from the manufacturer or an appropriate owners club. Then just fill in a V112, the easiest form in the world. Look the write up for it on our Blog, which takes you through it.

I suspect you might have few more hurdles to jump through with a virtually new bike. But if you have a '23 plate I am not sure what you mean about having to register it. You will have to contact NOVA as you will not be able to register it until it is on the Nova system. When I have imported bikes the shipping agent dealt with the paperwork, and I paid the 5% of what I paid for the bike plus a fee to the agent. The main pitfall at the moment seems to be the time that the DVLA take to process things. If it is on the NOVA system it should be reasonably straight forward, you should be able to ring them with the VIN to check. You will need to get the bike MOT'd as it will be less than 40 years old. It can be MOT'd using the VIN. You only need to insure it if you are in Northern Ireland. I wouldn't insure it yet, in case you do end up with a long DVLA delay.
