My favorite wedding filmmaking gear: kit.co/whoismatt
Today, I have a new tutorial for you all about how I film dancing at a wedding reception. In it, I cover four key tips that should help your improve your footage of people dancing during a wedding reception. The open dance floor doesn't have to be boring or intimidating! It can be a lot of fun, I promise.
In this video I cover:
😀How to interact with the couple, wedding coordinator, and DJ when preparing to film the dancing at the reception.
💡A way to light the dance floor and make it look incredible even when there's awful venue lighting.
💃My go-to technique to get more energetic dancing shots that show how much fun the wedding guests were having.
😮The exact way I shoot to make editing dancing footage super easy in post (it's almost editing itself!)
If any of that interests you, I would highly recommend checking out the video. :)
Get the lights, stands, and dimmer I talked about in the video at this link: kit.co/whoismatt/reception-li...

Matt WhoisMatt Johnson - are you using AF when your filming 'tight' on the dance floor. I'm looking at either a A7s II or the A6500 the A6500 on paper would seem to be better for this because of the better AF. I figured if I put a 16mm on and used clear image zoom I could also get 3 different focal lengths FF equivalent of 24mm 36mm and 48mm.

+Achihud Adamit thanks! I use just one, it's plenty bright :)

+mark shirley hey Mark! Not usually, because there's so much movement and faces that the camera would have difficulty picking on what to focus on.

Also, I recommend shooting with an ultra-wide lens (11-16mm) and a mono-pod up high when filming a crowded dance floor, especially when they do line dances. It's a cool shot to see the entire dance floor doing the same dance. I would also film close-up dance b-roll at 120 frames for dramatic slow-mo.

Lighting is EVERYTHING! The Arri 150 is awesome. One tool everyone should have in the box. The Dedo is even more awesome and versatile. Not thrilled with the Lowel pro, but it is cheaper... Lowel does have some impressive lights. The Tota is my favorite if you use their diffusion frame.

Hey matt do you have a video about how to film a good first dance for the couple? I have a wedding coming up in 2 months where I will be filing the first dance and wonder what is the best approach to filming it and what equipment (apart from my camera of course) to use during the emotional highlight of the evening.
@whoismatt
@whoismatt 7 лет назад
+Kevin Murphy hey Kevin! Definitely planning on covering that in the future. I film the first dance a little different than this because I don't want to get as close. Usually I'm on a 24 or 50mm getting wider shots on a Glidecam, while my second shooter is on a tighter 135mm getting faces.

Matt you're awesome! You have the best content I've seen on wedding cinematography. How much of a noticeable difference do you think there is between the arri and the lowel? What does the arri do better in your opinion?
@whoismatt

@bobbylayden8563
@bobbylayden8563 7 лет назад
Matt! Just recently started following your work and videos on here. Awesome, brother. Question: Do you ask your couples if you can set up lights at the reception or do you just do it? Do you use just one or 2 lights? Ever have a couple that told you to take them down because it was ruining the "mood" that they wanted for their reception? I love the buddy system idea. I shoot with my wife as well, but most of the time we're filming two separate things in two separate parts of the room. I think the buddy system will help us capture better quality footage to use in editing, as well as put us closer together to enjoy the night TOGETHER :)
@whoismatt
@whoismatt 7 лет назад
+Bobby Layden thanks Bobby! Yes, I always talk to the couple about it when I meet with them before the wedding. I tell them about lighting and how important it is for filming good reception footage. I just use one Arri 150 as it is plenty bright enough while still being unobtrusive. It won't mess up the mood of the reception :) Hope the buddy system helps you too! My wife and I still cover a ton of ground when we are together because we can get great shots in 10-20 seconds then move on to another part of the dance floor.

LOVE THIS! Question: Do you move your light setup at all for the toasts? or do you plan for that? or possibly just have other lights for that setup? I'm questioning how to do that with just the one arriving light you convinced me to buy and some LED panel fill lights.
@whoismatt
@whoismatt 7 лет назад
+Trevor Maloch hey Trevor! Yes, I either move the light or the couple depending on where the lighting will look best for them. Led lights are great too for reaction shots etc.

Another great vid! Lots of amazing tips. What are your thoughts on if the couple is very resistant to the idea of lighting? I've had a few that feel it 'spoils the mood' even after showing them the different between no lighting versus having a lighting. I've explained that my camera cannot see in the dark, so to speak.

+GustavoArceMusic hey Gustavo! I'm planning on doing an editing tutorial eventually. I don't do much DVD exporting these days. I use adobe encore when I need to render DVDs.

would 60w LED be enough for most of the weddings? I know it all depends on how much space / darkness there is but generally speaking? DO you use 150W on max strenght? or not that many times?

Hey Matt! Quick question - do you shoot 60fps the entire wedding reception dancing portion? Then you can choose to switch between real-time and slo mo? Or do you switch between 24fps and 60fps throughout?

Is there a LUT that you could recommend for lighting scenarios like this? I’m still wondering how to color grade dark scenes with this kind of purple lighting. Have a z6ii and shooting flat profile 8-bit.

Matt.... Thanks so much for your videos, they are fantastic. After 12yrs of wanting to do this, Im finally making the jump into starting my own business and buying proper gear to film weddings. Ill be trying out some of my new gear by filming some at my own wedding here in two weeks. lol. Two questions: Have you moved to LED lights yet? Are you looking at other units or putting an LED light in the ARRI?Also, If you put two lights on the dance floor, where do you usually place them? 180 degrees from another, 90, 45? Ok, that was more like 4 questions.

+openg8 thank you! Nope, I'm still using the Arri 150. I have heard good things about the Came-TV Boltzen 55W led light if you wanna check that out. I usually only use one light. :)

Love your videos bro! Thank you! Those $125 lights you mentioned..how many would be good for a decent size dance floor? Do you use 2 or just one light? I appreciate the awesome tips!
@whoismatt

+Phillip Hodges thanks Phillip! I would just get one and see how you like it. I only use one and it is plenty.

excellent tips tho bro. you didn't mention where you place the light and how far from the dance floor. how do you go about that?
@whoismatt
@whoismatt 7 лет назад
+AdventureSingh I usually put the light on the side of the dance floor on the opposite side of the dj or band's lights. It really depends on the size of the venue and dance floor etc. I don't ever bounce it though due to wanting a direct light that offers better lens flares and intensity.

Great tips! Question: When would you recommend who records b roll of the reception and others dancing if the secondary shooter sticks with you instead of just shooting only the couple?

So funny watching this, and now you have a near $1k light and love it to death :P. I use 3 cheap Yongnuo's, fully battery powered and also look great for video. They come with barn doors, are 3200k and work great. Downside is I don't have remote control or colour control. For the price though, they're only $79.
