How to Make Engaging RU-vid Videos: Tips for Musicians and Creators
🎸 Confession Time: As much as I love the guitar culture, I find most guitar RU-vid videos boring. Just kidding - I love my guitar friends and all the great videos they make! But my true passion? Watching videos on how to make videos.
🎥 Why Video Quality Matters: Your visual presentation can make or break your content. From my days at a music store, I learned that good lighting is key to a great performance. Remember, people hear with their eyes.
Here’s how to elevate your video game.
✨ Top Video Tips for Creators:
Lighting: Use a key light to shape your look and avoid unflattering ceiling lights. Experiment with a 45-degree angle for a professional touch.
Camera Angles: Mix up your shots to maintain viewer interest. Multiple angles and dynamic cuts keep your audience engaged.
Gear Recommendations: Start with your phone or get an interchangeable lens camera. Lighting tools like a softbox can significantly improve your visuals.
Audio Quality: Invest in good microphones and get them close to you to ensure clear, crisp sound.
🎬 Become Your Own Director: Plan your shots, use natural light, and keep your edits tight. Simple transitions and thoughtful camera movements can make a big difference.
🛠️ Essential Tools:
Camera: A basic setup from Sony or Canon with a forward facing flip screen.
Lighting: Softboxes and calibrated photography lights for consistency.
Microphones: Lavalier or shotgun mics for clear audio.
👀 Engage Your Viewers: Make sure your content is visually appealing and easy to follow. Timing cuts with music and focusing on different elements in your frame can keep viewers hooked.

I have a cinema camera I use for most music video projects, a Sony a7s II, and it's an amazing camera for capturing videos, and most go for around $750 (you can easily find them for less). This camera has helped with getting more attention to my content, even if I am only using a photo taken to back an audio track with no official video. The one thing I should be doing for my videos is to use my multi-instrumental skills paired with video, however, I feel like my skills on a few instruments needs to improve before I'm ready for that, since people do like videos with multiple angles

great suggestion! The a7s line is amazing for what we do! I’ve used them a bit and plan on switching from Fuji later this year

Danny, I'm not sure how I found your channel but I love your stuff. I have been thinking about getting into recording some guitar videos so this couldn't come at a better time. Really knocked it out of the park, this answered most of the "newbie" questions I was wondering about lighting, cameras, etc.

This is an amazing video! I hope this sounds like a compliment but I was never bored during this whole video, I was both educated and entertained! I have been searching for videos about videos since I want to start posting covers on the Tube and most if not all have been quite boring. I really appreciate this valuable information, I will try to use this for my next vid!

You are killing it man!!! These are gold. I have been doing research for several months in order to create a channel (bass oriented) and you are helping me greatly with quality entertaining content like this. Thanks dude!!!

@DannyUnderwood 2 месяца назад
YES! Create your channel, it's kind of like music where every video you do will be better than the last in some way. So you just have to get started. If you need to bounce any ideas around please don't hesitate to ask

Well then Sir, I do indeed have a question. If I was doing a channel focused on Bass Fuzz pedals/circuits, would the larger audience prefer to hear these direct with a volt/scarlet/etc... or by using a mic on my bass amp? Thanks a million man!
@milogilligan816
@milogilligan816 2 месяца назад
I see it done both ways, is there a method that is considered preferred?
@DannyUnderwood
@DannyUnderwood 2 месяца назад
How hard would it be to do both? Get a splitter and record the mic and direct. Then you could experiment with blending and what not. One thing I've noticed is that people are generally less concerned with the very clinical sound demos and gravitate more to it sounding generally good, and learning about why it is different than other choices. I've done "demo's" in the past where I dont share what settings I'm on, or the deep details, it's more about the general vibe and seeing the presenter enjoy themselves - does that make sense? haha!

Now that is some legit advice I could use. I was hesitant to ask, but VERY glad I did. Thanks for the fresh perspective my dude!

Very informative, I never thought of video production, but I like what you're cooking, so I watch your stuff. Me personally I would like to know your opinions on building a studio i.e. monitors, sound treatment, analog or digital...also I would like to talk Star Wars with you, and what you like to do on days off. Do you enjoy putting together puzzles? Legos? I haven't built a lego since I was 14. I always want to though.
@DannyUnderwood
@DannyUnderwood 2 месяца назад
Studio Monitors Yes, Sound treatment mm depends, mostly no. Analog fuzz/distortion/modulation, the rest digital. Star Wars; Boba Fett is my favourite but his new show was bad. Days off? You just watched it. lol

@@DannyUnderwood I thought that new show was bad, but I thought everyone was all about the Disney programming so I just kept my mouth shut. I'm looking forward to Andor season 2 though. Mando was good too. Whatever that Pascal guy touches is gold. I need a set of monitors, I have been looking for the best quality for the most reasonable price. Adam audio seems to have a decent entry series. Any suggestions? You're making good content, quality production with quality writing. I look forward to the next one. Have a great end of week and week-end.

Monitors are a great investment but imo you dont have to go too crazy - because when your mixing you should be listening to your mix on everything (your car, headphones etc). So you dont necessarily scrimp and save to buy the most expensive ones the you can hear every detail - though they are nice! I use Yorkville YSM5's which are a Canadian brand that are super reputable, I also whole heartedly recommend the Yamaha HS5. My biggest advice is that the speaker size is not the same as guitar speakers where "bigger is often better". The size of your monitors reflect how far away they are from you, a bigger speaker has a longer throw. So if they are going to be on a desk close to you like mine - do not get something larger than a 5. Get a larger size if you are sitting farther from them with them on stands behind your desk.

Will this work with playing the saxophone?
@DannyUnderwood
@DannyUnderwood 2 месяца назад
definitely! Same rules apply to anything really. For Sax I would be mindful of reflections in the instrument, pay close attention so that the lights your using aren't reflecting too obviously in the finish. I find that a little annoying with guitars because you can see the big ugly light dome almost perfectly.

@DannyUnderwood , thank you for the content. HELP! I couple years ago I recorded myself with my Iphone changing the internal memory battery on my Roland VG-88. The intent was to post it, because I couldn’t find it anywhere on the web. I got no DAW (my wife has a Macbook; I have PC). I want to edit, speed up, mix in voice over and music. Do you have any nuggets for me? (Just so you know, I now have two favorite Boss/Roland guys in my world: Alex Hutchings and you, Danny-Boo!) Thank you for sharing your fun with us.

You cojls use a free program like iMovie on your iPhone if you want to try a simple program. DaVinci Resolve one of the most used editors ever has a free version as well. Get on it!!!
