5 years later after this video was made here I am coming out from under a rock. Now having been completely mind f***ed with this video........I try this on a washer/dryer install on a brand new 5th wheel RV. Only thing was I was avoiding the studs not needing them. $7 of magnets against $89,000 rig and a 4" hole........and holy crapola it worked. Much thanks.

Excellent. If I had to watch one more dumb ass pounding on a wall comparing sound or another d.a. hammer nails in random places on a wall I was gonna toss my laptop out the window. Thanks, ZACH!

Put one each of those magnets inside a plastic bag (sandwich, ziplock, whatever) and it not only gives you something to hold while searching for the screw/nail, but easier magnet removal, if it falls to the floor you won't have to chase it, and if the magnets *snap* together, there's two layers of that plastic in between them to help prevent chipping/breaking a magnet.

You can also put these magnets when you do an oil change on your oil filter to attract metal particles your filter won't catch , your welcome :)
@ZackOfAllTrades
@ZackOfAllTrades 6 лет назад
You can also put one on the bottom or side of your oil pan as a place to hold your oil plug while you're doing the job. Keeps you from dropping it in the dirt. You're also welcome :-)

attach one end to a stud and use a quality drywall anchor for the other.. some drywall anchors can support up to 200 lbs (like the snap toggle ones)

Hi Zach. Thank you - thank you - thank you for this trick. My good old magnetic Stanley Stud Finder was not strong enough to find the nail in our walls. Part of the issue is our walls are plaster and lath and they are thick. I had some super strong neodymium magnets left over from another project. This trick worked perfectly. Saved us a lot of trouble and work. Much appreciated.

A nice trick, but I'm wondering will this work with trying to find studs from an exterior wall? The reason I ask, I need to install a ledger board for framing for a roof over my deck.
@ZackOfAllTrades
@ZackOfAllTrades 6 лет назад
it should work, assuming your exterior cladding is attached with screws or nails.

Had exactly the same problem, great tip, thank you! Another -cheap- frugal tip is to get the magnets from any old unused hard drives that may be lying around. These are handy to have anyway, e.g. to magnetise a screwdriver tip etc.

I just look in a mirror. Now with the obligatory cheesy comment behind us... I lightly swipe my hand across the wall. While looking away. I can 'feel' the denser feel, where the stud is. I can find the studs with a 95% accuracy. A strong light, once I have found the stud, will usually work to confirm the sighting. As for the stud finder and it's batteries... You missed a step. FIND the stud finder. Clean the corrosion out of it along with the corroded batteries. Then replace the batteries.

you sir are a genius, mate it's the slightly Einstein tash. I have a stud finder, just replaced the battery, trying to hang a clothes dryer pulley in the kitchen ceiling. and I'm getting a continuous tone. my kitchen must be made of steel. hmm. Off to buy some magnets. cheers.

Great method sir. Bravo. Tapping, I believe, is the cheapest way to do it but requires practice & a good ear. Being a musician helps a lot but your method is more precise & much easier for the regular Joe. Keep it up!

I live in an older condo, so when the light is right, I can see the bedded nails. If the light is not right, i just call in my youngest son. His batteries are impossible to run down or remove. But, seriously, you method is nothing short of genius and I will remember it.

This was hilarious, even without having any straight jokes. The deadpan delivery was awesome. It was also the most helpful of the videos I found on RU-vid trying to solve this problem. I tried it out and then smacked my head in a "no duh" moment as I found an even EASIER way to find a stud: look for the place where the lazy drywaller didn't put the screw all the way into the sheet rock so it makes a pronounced circular impression on the wall...

I have a big neodymium magnet that I got off amazon for 12 dollars. It's has a 125 pound pull force. It's a lot of fun to play with, be carful if you ever get two though. That's a recipe for broken figures.
@ZackOfAllTrades
@ZackOfAllTrades 8 лет назад
+VTGoPro there used to be two halves of a big round one at a shop I worked at. There was no shortage of smashed fingers and bloody finger webbing when guys would decide to fool with it and show how strong they were while trying to keep the halves apart!

Hey zack this is zack.... Sup.... Mm yea so im in a dilly of a pickle year and i must have gotten the mexican builders who took the nails/ screws for scrap money and glued the damn drywall on.. Everybit of drywall, um , walls not the dryceiling, walls.. They took the damn time to literally pressure fit the stuff and splooged glue on em.. I went to fix a pipe leak behind a wall and when drywall came out, so did insulation with it.. And the other wall behind it.... So got a new horse window, but in a situation where i cant miss and need to get a screw or nail in wood.. How the fak do i find a for sure stud the first time?
@ZackOfAllTrades
@ZackOfAllTrades 6 лет назад
Ok, I think I'm on the same page with you (although I can't figure out what a horse window is). If I understand you correctly there's a hole in your drywall where you could stick your head in and look left or right and see a stud. Good so far? If so, stick your tape measure in and measure how far from the left stud to the center of your hole. Next measure from the right side to the center of your hole. Those two combined SHOULD be 16 inches. Now measure outside the drywall from the point at the center of your hole to the measurement you got on the inside, mark it. measure 1.5 inches further from that, mark it. now put a mark right in the center of those two marks which is the center of your stud. now mark off 16 inch increments from that point and you should be marking the center of your studs. I hope that helps. Lemme know if i'm misunderstanding. Thanks for watchin! and thanks for spelling our name correctly!

Supposing whoever installed the stud initially didn’t put the nail or screw in the center of the stud. Then what do you do? How do you find the edge of the stud precisely? 🙂
@TruthSurge
@TruthSurge 5 лет назад
Maybe use a very tiny nail that won't matter when you poke 2 or 3 holes, guess and see if you can FIND the edge with that? If it goes in easy, you are not in the stud. then you will know where the edges really are and you're going to cover that up anyway. Just my guess. I know nothing!

@@tiptoe2323 I'm only viewing because I TOO am going to hang a 65" TV so it said I needed to mount using the studs instead of just the sheet rock so..... I run to YT and find vids of how to do that W/O a stud finder. I think I found mine so now I gotta nail a few holes to try and clarify exactly where the edges are so I can put my bolts whatever in the middle or near middle of the studs. :) fun stuff (not really).

Can they find a nail with double drywall??
@ZackOfAllTrades
@ZackOfAllTrades 5 лет назад
I'm gonna say it depends on the thickness of said double drywall as well as the size of the magnet. A bigger magnet is going to have a better chance of picking up the nail thru two layers.
