That light switch is a big clue too, and why he chose to try there. That switch (or an outlet) is up against a stud

Uh it may not be a nail head it may be a metal pipe. All you can conclude is there may be something metal behind the wall. How can you conclude it is a stud? Did I miss something?

In Canada, studs run vertically - from top to bottom.

That's because you are on top of the earth. Here in Michigan, we have to run the studs at 45°, and in the Caribbean they run them horizontal. See how that works?
