Never again will you miss a stud when mounting hardware, brackets, and art to your walls! Here are five tried and true (and pretty smart) ways to find the framing behind your sheetrock, even if you don't own a stud finder! AND... even if you do own a stud finder, these are great tricks to double check your stud finder... they have been know to be wrong from time to time :). We actually use these methods all the time when building custom homes to make sure we hit solid wood. For all of you veteran builders out there... we do also find our framing more easily, due to the fact we know the reference corner in the house from which layout was pulled, and also use this to our advantage.

This is another example why “lock & key” builders, construct better homes‼️ They are conscience to these details because they have to work the next phase of the build. As you opined in the description, Yall know the reference point where layout began- plus Yall add tremendous amount of blocking‼️ After I shifted to all masonry; so many times the exterior sheeting or drywall on prefab fireplaces, was only nailed on corners and couple in middle‼️ When I started nailing metal lathe or wall ties; I was actually securing the sheeting to the house ( we actually nail lathe and wall ties to studs). We found the un-nailed sheeting 1st as we put felt paper up before the lathe/ties- yes, paper nailed to studs w/simplex nails. That gave a true pattern where studs were for wire/ ties. Many fireplaces,! I would strip down to studs and reframed ( depending on artistic design) to insure my quality of work. Blessings to YALL AND PRAYERS FOR FAMILIES/ JAMIE‼️👈🏻👴🏻🌹 Blessed Mother’s Day🌹🙏‼️

I install trim and the Franklin Sensor is hands down the best. No need to calibrate on the wall. Just press the tool against the wall and turn it on. The 11-13 led lights will illuminate to show where stud (s) are in the wall. Costco was selling this for a good price last time I checked. Wish you could have demonstrated yours in this video. It's a game changer. SHOUT OUT TO JAMIE!!!!

I haven't really used the magnetic great tip. I am excellent at tapping and finding studs very old houses can be very misleading though all the lathe and nails and screws that have been used over the decades can be a real bummer. I have used the flashlight technique a time or two though!! Prayers for Jaime love your videos sometimes especially when I can't get out of bed you really put a smile on my face and help me not be a grumpy butthead. Tool video bit me again bought a new Bosch 3 1/4 planer the other half was waiting for me to wake up to tell me I had several packages I pointed to the video blamed on it bit me again can't wait until I can get out of bed again to try it out even though I just bought a new Dewalt a couple months ago.

All good tips for drywall; most will not work on plaster walls (at least in the 2 plaster-walled houses I've lived in). I recently bought some strong magnets to find studs in my plaster walls but no dice. Where the lath is exposed they will stick to the nails like glue, but through 1/2 inch plaster the nails are invisible. Stud finders work every once in a while, but mostly they're confused and beep and freak out with the "start over" signal. The only sure-fire way I've found to find studs is the method in the beginning of the video, which I call the "drive-by" method. Just guess where you think a stud is (measuring 16" off a corner and hoping you get lucky, or using the outlet trick) and drill (or nail) a small hole through the wall to see if you hit a stud. If so, mark and measure 16" away and repeat. If not, move the drill over about 1/2" and drill another hole. Keep going until you hit a stud. This method can be ugly! And scare your partner that you're destroying the crib! But if you're looking for studs that means you probly fina do some more damage anyway - cut into the wall to install outlets, attach something heavy to the wall, etc. In which case you may need to do some touch-up spackling/painting anyway. So hit the drive-by holes while you're at it, sand and slap some touchup paint on 'em, and no one will know you were there!

Exceptional video! The best I've seen for stud finding and the lighthearted humour makes it extra entertaining. I tried the strong magnet idea before and it did not always work for me but when you talked about the nails in the baseboard I put two and two together and ran the magnets along the baseboard to find the nails and the studs and it works perfectly! The tapping technique is pretty good too once I get used to it. Thanks so much again!

I’m an electrician working on commercial sites so metal studs are the norm. Another way I know to find the stud when screws are used is to crumble some fine steel wool over the wall. The screws become magnetized as they are driven resulting in the fine steel dust adhering to it. Also carry a cow magnet on a piece of masons string. It will find the metal stud through the drywall. Doesn’t need to find the screw. If you can fin a big enough cow magnet I’ve seen it work through double 5/8” drywall. Keep up the great tips. Been enjoying your videos

Thx so much. My dad is a retired contractor. His answers are resolute… 1- “use a tape measure - there are 16 inches between the studs” 2- “u can hear it when u tap on the wall” 3- “well for your house, they did a shoddy building it, surprised u can’t see the cracks & seams in the craftsmanship- use a level” 🤭🤦🏽‍♀️. Thx for this video. I’ll try the magnet as I hv several tape measures.

Good one. Surprising what you can see on drywall if you get the right light and angle. If you are having trouble finding screws with magnet look for joints since there are screws right next to one another where the panels join. If you can't find the joint, start 4 foot off the ground, where the joint usually is.
@KalRandom
@KalRandom 4 года назад
Really like the strong magnet idea, never thought about that. If you get a piece of RG-6 (standard cable/satellite) wire strip out the center copper wire, cut a 45 (or sharper) angle on the end, you can easily push it thru drywall to verify a stud location without leaving a big hole. Most times it will never be seen.

Much like you, if we're doing stuff that requires a stud finder, going and finding the guy using it every time is annoying. I bought a little cheap one I keep I'm my belt, but it's not very accurate and has seen better days. Also the framers we use aren't the best, so finding 1 stud doesn't guarantee the next one will be 16 inches lol. I've Never heard of the magnet or flashlight technique. My torpedo does have a magnet so I'll gave to try this out. But I have become somewhat of a master of the finger tap technique lol.

Tapping is more about feel than sound. Keep the same force behind every hit. Where it's the hardest and hurts to hit you have a stud. You have give between the studs it cushions the tap ever so slightly. I'd double-check with a magnet because the longer you tap the more everything feels like a stud. Your just breaking your finger don't worry.
@johnm5714
@johnm5714 4 года назад
I’ve used that magnet trick for years--it’s probably the best method there is.I can also use the sound method pretty successfully too.Im in the Custom Window treatment business and I install some insanely heavy items on walls that absolutely must be into framing but the layout of where my brackets need to be doesn’t always allow for using 16” center placement--that’s when I pull out the 5-6” deck screws and go looking for the sheathing.There are a handful of high end builders I do work for who have made my life extremely easy--they line ALL the walls with 1/2” plywood and it’s like a dream--every screws a home run.
