For the second method (star wobbling), how can we determine the planet's information if there are more than one planet orbiting the star? It seems to me that we can only get precise planet information if only one planet orbited the star (relatively speaking)...
@aronenark8184
@aronenark8184 10 лет назад
Planets are usually found in very different orbit, taking different amounts of time to orbit. The closest large pkanet will have the quickest, most observable impact on the star. If we average the star's wobble from that first plant, we'll notice a secondary, longer wobble, indicatiing a planet in a slower, larger orbit. Repeat until theres no more wobbles and you can identify multiple planets around one star, given their orbits aren't too close.

Relativistic beaming for those interested involves a planet tugging on the star causing an increase in the density of photons towards the observer thus making the star brighter. Its limited to Jupiter-like planets at distance of 0.025 AU. So its not very practical but serves as a method for checking other techniques.

I have a weird question that is probably addressed early in physics classes that I never took. What I would like to understand is, if space has no "center" per say, except maybe the starting point of the Big Bang. Then how do we measure speed at all? I mean, if for instance, Earth is the dead center of the universe. The Sun is then traveling around it at 1 cycle a year but the other planets aren't traveling around the Earth. So, what would you relate their speeds to? Would they be speeding up as the planets move away and slowing down as they get closer, because from our perspective we wouldn't be seeing them at the same speed. This, I understand, is the whole reason calculus exists. So, I know I am over simplifying the issue and probably misunderstanding something crucial. For instance, if the universe (meaning whatever space/time we are sitting in) is traveling at 1 trillion mph in a single direction, then we go backwards into that direction at the same speed, wouldn't we be stopping? So, if we are going backwards into space at that stopping speed, would special relativity kick in and cause us to experience time dilation, or would there not be any effect at all, since we are technically losing speed. or is space/time affixed in such a way that empty space is just a consistent thing that doesn't have the properties I'm giving it, but if that's the case, what about if it were in relation to the galactic spin. So, that instead of us moving with our arm of the Milky Way, we "stop" in relation to it? Which would require us moving at enormous speeds relative to it. I hope I explained that well, anyways, thanks for your time whoever reads this.

Pluto is still a planet. Not all astrophysicists agreed with NDT arbitrarily deciding that Pluto was no longer a planet, and I refuse to accept it either. Saying 'Pluto's not a planet' anymore has nothing to do with science, it's arbitrary semantics.
@KaosFireMaker
@KaosFireMaker 10 лет назад
So you would be fine with me calling the internet a watermelon. Its just arbitrary semantics.
@Guardian978
@Guardian978 10 лет назад
Complete non-sequitor. There is no reason to call the Internet a watermelon, as it has never been called one and there is no correlating evidence that the two are related. There is plenty of evidence that Pluto is a planet; there's not a scientific consensus, just a majority. And the majority went ahead and changed to 'dwarf planet', and started trying to 're-educate' people. Arguments toward planethood include the fact that Pluto may have multiple moons and has an atmosphere, which is unique among the 'dwarf planets' that NASA classed them into.

Pluto shares many more traits with large asteroids than with regular planets. It has a very small mass compared to the other debris in its orbit (a few % compared to 99.99999% for regular planets). If we didn't make the definition more strict, we'd have dozens if not hundreds of planets and the word planet would lose its meaning.
@Guardian978
@Guardian978 10 лет назад
Do asteroids have atmosphere? Do they have multiple smaller satellites? There are solid arguments for Pluto being a planet. There will be a close flyby of the PLANET Pluto in a year or so, and we will likely find additional features to support the argument. Also for the record, with its atmosphere Pluto is larger than even the largest 'dwarf planet' that it got shoved in with.

So if two planets of equal mass were in the same orbit, but on opposite sides of their star, would they then with current technology be undetectable except by transit?
@SkyrimHod
@SkyrimHod 10 лет назад
This would be a rather unstable orbit to begin with, so it's unlikely that two objects would stay like that for very long. And technically if two objects of equal mass share an orbit, neither one would meet the definition of being a planet anyway.

@CorneliusSneedley
@CorneliusSneedley 10 лет назад
SkyrimHod Hmm, regarding having cleared its orbit, I am not sure that would apply. Regarding instability, okay, I'll bite. Why? I can certainly see how it might be an unstable orbit(s), but I don't see why it _must_ be.
@user-uz2ku3vb6b
@user-uz2ku3vb6b 10 лет назад
CorneliusSneedley What do you mean "not sure"? Unfortunately, that's the definition of the planet - an object massive enough to clear its orbit from space debris and shit like that. So if two such objects revolve on same orbit, they by definition are not planets. Maybe if such objects are ever detected, the definition of a planet will change, but who knows, right?

LOL. How come on every single science video I watch i always read comments that are negatively referencing the Bible. Something like "All christians are stupid," "The Bible is a lie and/or fiction." Really i expected more from individuals who claim to be rational and intellectual. You're no better than religious individuals who post their beliefs on scientific or even non scientific videos and preach online. I can't seem to find a single video or rarely find one that has no religious references from a theist or an atheist. Everyone who is participating in it is doing the very same thing they wish to abolish from their religious counterparts, which is pretty hypocritical. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, no matter how much you may disagree. Respect their opinions and simply move beyond silly utilization of derogatory terms against their belief. Additionally, why is it always Christians that are getting the spotlight? There are many other religion such as Islam, Hindu and many other type of religion out there.
@scahsaint6249
@scahsaint6249 10 лет назад
Hugo Rendlesham Okay dude, calm down. Allow me to address a few of the points you seems to of randomly made. "Why are you oppose to people calling out bullshit? Do you like disinformation or something? Do you not think people who spread dribble should be held accountable?" Firstly, those "people" I'm referring to weren't just bashing on others beliefs because of the simple reason you presented. They're actually finding pleasure from hating on the religion purposely. There are ways to try and educate people other than utilizing name calling and derogatory terms to degrade ones belief. Moreover, if you could precisely point out the part in my comment where I concurred to "misinformation" being spread that would be great. Additionally, you think arguments on RU-vid video comment section is a way to resolve this? You have no clue of how to even resolve matters do you? If you want to go and express your opinion and rally, there are forums and organisations you can sign up to. If you really want to do something like your angry comment seems to indicate then join up and actually do something. "We're not talking about harmless opinions here, we're talking about people who deliberately misrepresent facts and even their own religions." Who are you talking about the extremist? Generalizing a group of people based on others actions isn't the most intelligent decision. I am fully aware of the people who manipulate the meaning of religious text in order to achieve their own personal goal. Like when some religious extremist claim that the Bible or God(s) hates LGTB and same sex marriage. Only gullible and ignorant people would actually believe that. Especially when in the Bible loving everyone and not being superficial is greatly perpetuated and emphasized. I openly resent them and show my support by helping organisations to fight against them and any other groups that would oppose others freedom to do as they wish lawfully of course. "Also who is forcing you to read these arguments?" Who's forcing me to read them? Did i mention anyone was? I have the right to read any comment posted on here and, i was simply expressing my thoughts. If you have a problem with people reading comments and expressing their thoughts then you shouldn't even be on the internet. I don't care if they continue with their comments or not, all i said was it isn't doing justice to their cause by doing the same thing that they oppose. Counter-wise, who told you to read my comment and reply? Anyone can use that same argument for virtually anything. You should understand the basis of the argument instead of anticipating my intentions prior to actually understand the comment
@scahsaint6249
@scahsaint6249 10 лет назад
Hugo Rendlesham You require a survey to simply anticipate and to be able to tell the difference between actual hate comments and actual legitimate ones? When people say "Christians are stupid," or anything similiar you don't require a survey to understand that. Like I said there's a difference between teaching properly and hating purposely. Ideals will always conflict but they should be debated in a civil and mature manner. You're the one that seems to of rushed into a defensive position of this. The only person who's angry is you. Neither side of the fence? You claimed that I was accepting disinformation. Pretty bold statement when I didn't even say anything like that. That last section of my comment isn't contradictory. You seem to be unable to process what I actually meant.Although, I guess I shouldn't be surprised, you required a survey to be able to comprehend that some people actually purposely hate on religion after all.
@scahsaint6249
@scahsaint6249 10 лет назад
Hugo Rendlesham Ahaha simple minded and yes I have had individuals actually confirm my claims that they do actually enjoy bashing on religion because they believe it's only for the intellectually deficient. You're attempting to now segregate the main topic of the argument by saying one aspect of it is childish and people don't read it? Sorry it doesn't work that way. Additionally, if you think you knew what my argument was referring to and you were referring to a different type, then why did you comment? You obviously had nothing better to do and you claimed you were suppose to be "working." I'm not twisting any context, if you believe that then obviously failed to grasp the subject matter. Like I said many times if you could point to the specific parts in my comment where you believe I contradicted myself or said anything that I refute then please go ahead. Otherwise, you're just a random joke attempting to look smart. That last sentence is hilarious, you really do have your fair share of personal issues ahaha.

Abraham rugato I’m not trying to defend Hugo (he sounded rude as hell :u), just explain: Go to a religious channel or video; the same arrogant attitude Atheists/Agnostics have in channels like these will be found there, but reversed: Religious people making fun of people who are not affiliated to their religion. Better yet: Hang out with very religious people. The church I’m forced to assist to makes fun of people who believe in evolution, and I have to dismiss myself at times because my own family makes fun of science itself; it’s pitiful to watch. Most people had TERRIBLE experiences with religious-ness. With time, the mere sound of the words “God”, “faith”, “belief” or “religion” gets on your nerves, and you develop adversion towards all stuff. In my land we have a saying: “si te llevas, aguanta.” If you punch, the other person is in the right to punch back. Religious people are nowhere near being victims, and the people on the Internet use that as an excuse to act like six-year-olds. You can say, “oh, but those people who make fun of science are not ‘real’ Christians/Muslims/X-religion. They’re just a**holes!” We can say the same about Atheists. We can say that those pedantic citizens are the cancer of Atheism, the equivalent to Creationists in Christianity, but there’s no use. I KNOW Atheists/Agnostics are the pseudo-martyrs of turn. We’re drowning on 2-kook-4-skool kids thinking they’re cool and edgy for saying Virgin Mary is a whore. But pointing them out or generalizing won’t make neither the Religious Freaks neither the Pseudo-Intellectual Atheists go away, will it? The point is: Social stupidity doesn’t discriminate religious affiliation. Ask the Middle East.
@scahsaint6249
@scahsaint6249 10 лет назад
Mimicke Didn't read through your entire comment but I assume your talking about religious people doing the same thing ? Regardless,my position in the argument is clear. Ultimately, i would like to see a video where neither parties are spamming comments with derogatory terms and hate towards each other. At the end of the day, they are all as bad as each other. You can't fight fire with fire. Ignorance is the root of all these silly conflicts. In time,however, and hopefully things will change and they will come to a understanding that they both have different perspectives. That's all i have to say about the subject matter.

TheDahaka1 Yeah, the Sun is somewhere around 99% of the entire mass of the solar system. I suppose we do rotate around the Sun, even though the Sun rotates too, but since the center of mass is so close to the Sun's center of mass, it's easy to take its rotation as just a simple revolution. hildegain Those things you list benefit many people on earth. Exoplanet hunting is just pure waste of time and a waste to public resources. Those telescopes should be focused on asteroids and yet many asteroids have slammed the planet in recent years surprising the so-called genius scientists. They didn't even see them coming. It's like driving your car down the highway and focused on the moon in the sky instead of the headlights travelling at 65 MPH coming straight at you. Supporters of this so-called science are dumb liberal Obamatards.

Here is a mistake, the size of the directly imaged planet does not have to be 10 times the size of Jupiter but rather the mass of Jupiter. More massive stars cool more slowly so they remain detectable for longer periods of time from their time of formation. In Exoplanet Archive there are about 10 discovery methods listed.

It sounds like your saying that the sun and planet rotate around a center of gravity that the sun just happens to be closest to because it weighs the most, but I think logic says that the planet still has a slieght gravitational pull on the sun causing it to move in the circle we percieve.

I understand astral wobbling if there's only one planet, but if there're multiple planets, doesn't the wobble of a star start to resemble the motion of one of those chaotic double pendula? How do scientists separate out the effects from each planet? Or do they just look at it and (after statistical analysis and whatnot) say that there is at least one planet close to the star? Similarly, but probably a lot more straightforwardly, don't some stars actually change in brightness (variable stars, I believe they're called)? How would one distinguish a variable star from a star with a light-blocking planet?

Henry: "of course, planets don't orbit around stars. They orbit around each other." Me, having recently finally grasped Fourier transforms 12 years after Calc BC in HS, getting an idea: "...solar system Fourier transform?" Is my idea relatable? Could an FT be used to calculate the motion of the sun? Or like, some kind of reverse FT where you add specific components and see what they add up to?

So...while watching this video, something crossed my mind. If the orientation of an orbiting planet around a star is no conveniently aligned with ours therefore not directly passing across the star for us to determine its relative size. Does this mean that planets can orbit in a multiple orientations like how an atomic model is portrayed? At which cause. Is there really a top side to the universe? Or is it the term of top and bottom relative. Because it seems like all of our planets are in the same plain. Could other planets in their systems be on a different plain than ours? That should be yes right?

you know we can tell what the composition of exoplanet's atmosphere is by looking at the type of light refracted through it's atmosphere, and if it has high amounts of O2 then that basically proof of alien life as high levels of oxygen can only be sustained in detectable amounts by photosynthesis. so at any given moment, somebody could of just discovered alien life but it would take time for you to know.

well for today the only way to "look" at othe rplanets surface is, if they are close, telscopes, if they are far, probes with cameras, exo-planets, no way as for now, but we can still detect its mass, its distance to its parental star therefore what kind of elements it might consist of.

Is the Universe Entirely Mathematical? Philosophical, Non-Scientific Bollocks. As the planet moves around, the center of gravity changes. Imagine a table with one leg in the center. You want the center of gravity to be in the middle, so you put weight on opposite sides. The wobble effect on the star is a similar concept. The center of mass can't move, but the star and planet does.

I hate that post on Tumblr where people are complaining about how Pluto isn't a planet because it's too small or doesn't have an atmosphere or whatever. They fail to realize its orbital path is 17 degrees skewed and intercepts Neptune's. There are asteroids larger than Pluto, have atmospheres AND moons but do we consider them planets? Absolutely not. Ugh these are the same people who think their galaxy print leggings are actually what the universe looks like through a telescope so I guess they aren't very informed right off the bat.
@MaxLamdin
@MaxLamdin 10 лет назад
it makes sense that other planets were easier to find than Pluto, not just due to advances in technology but the fact that Pluto would not make a transit or any stars and if it did it would be minuscule, so I guess finding exoplanets is easier when they're not in the solarsystem? I don't know if this is correct I just thought about it while watching this? love this field of science though
@TheReaper569
@TheReaper569 10 лет назад
we can only find large and massive exo planets, with the finding of pluto its not a easy - hard debate , its an effective- ineffective debate
@SkyrimHod
@SkyrimHod 10 лет назад
Finding Pluto had nothing to do with transits and if it had, there are plenty of stars it could have passed in front of. Planets within our own solar system are much easier to find by the light they reflect from the sun rather than the light they block when transiting in front of something else. What made Pluto so hard to find was that it's so far from the sun and so small that it doesn't reflect much light. Its orbit is also tilted at a very different angle than any of the planets, so most astronomers who were looking for a new planet would have been looking in completely the wrong direction to find Pluto.
